The secret to good sustained strafe jumping (i.e. 2000 units+) is to look forward at the next thing that you are approaching, and adjusting your mouse angle etc to compensate. It took me ages to figure this out, because I was focusing on the ground and my timing for the next strafe key and jump sequence. But once I lifted my head up everything changed! I practice on quakelives, raztrainql_beta3. It has good strafe jumping for beginners to advanced as well as movement maps etc. !DA

11:07 I still don't understand what should I actually do to go through these idiot pits. I even watched the damn tutorial video for the whole 3'd stage and STILL I can't... What should I actually do? Press W+A/D and what else? Because it's not working for me, even if I go right from the spawn room.
@LephariaGaming9 жыл бұрын
Shawn Falch Notice how I move the mouse in the same direction as the A/D button I'm pressing and how I try to look as straight as possible right before I hit the ground. The slow-mo shows that quite well. It depends a lot on the angle of your mouse movement, if you overshoot you lose too much speed, but you need a sufficient angle to gain enough momentum. Don't get too frustrated when you can't do it right away, once you get the hang of it it becomes quite easy to do.

@LephariaGaming9 жыл бұрын
Could be. It's a very gradual and smooth movement. Pay attention to the slow-motion footage how I do it. And I do it quite sloppily, so there's still lots of room for improvement :)
@MasterMojo859 жыл бұрын
Shawn Falch Hey. Maybe you don't press A/D all the time while jumping? You have to push the button until you change to the other one. That was my mistake at first. But even with knowing this I wasn't able to beat this stage at the first day. But on the second day I finally beat it. And now (today's the third day) I'm able to pass this stage pretty frequently. Not every time, but quite often. I'm using a very high sensivity. A 360 turn does only take 3 cm. So it doesn't really belong to sensivity. It's just practise.

+canceronyofoot See, I have a simple rule when it comes to my channels. It's not what you say, but how you say it. You're free to criticise me all you want, as long as it's in a respectful fashion. Your comment is the epitome of that. I wish there was a "comment hall of fame" so I could put your comment in there for all to see. Not being sarcastic here, more comments like that would make KZbin a better place. So thanks :) Anyway, that line of criticism has been brought up a bunch of times and I can see it, too. To be honest, it's probably due to the video being kind of rushed out when I saw that QL was released on Steam. And the fact that I love to ramble about such things. If I were to make the video again (which I'm not going to cause it's still my most successful one by far :D) I'd try to cut to the chase a lot quicker. As you say people just get turned off otherwise. Well, you live and learn I guess, so I hope I at least remember that in future videos :)

1) Most newer players make the mistake of overdoing the mouse movement. When QL came to steam I had troubles too at first because my sensitivity wasn't set up properly. It's a very subtle and smooth movement of just a few degrees. Keep practicing until you find the sweet spot. 2) Try Doom or Bitterman, they're both pretty low-key imo. What is LMB RMB and other right section buttons????
Nice tutorial and way of explaning. It's kinda hard to get used to this sort of movement after playing CS:GO though. You can also strafe jump in CS but the major difference is that you let go off W and just strafe with A and D (and of course moving your mouse into the corresponding direction). I would like to know if it would be okay to bind jumping on mousewheel? I have played FPS like that since the beginning and it would take me a long time to get used to pressing an actual button for jumpiing.
@LephariaGaming10 жыл бұрын
Sure, you should always do what feels best for you. The most Quake players (including myself) prefer the right mouse button for jumping and use the mouse wheel for rail gun and rocket launcher. But if you're used to this setup then it's probably a good idea to at least try it and if you can pull of the different jumps with it then why not. It is in any case technically possible to bind the jump to the mousewheel.
@MasterMojo859 жыл бұрын
LephariaGaming How can I bind weapons to the mousewheel? I'm using the Steam Version of Quake Live but if I try to change it in the menu it seems that it doesn't detect my mousewheel as an input. How did you bind it?
@LephariaGaming9 жыл бұрын
Yeah QL's menu is a bit wonky in that regard. You have to open the console and type /bind MWHEELDOWN (or MWHEELUP) "weapon [1-13]" with the appropriate number for the weapon you want to bind. The numbers are weapon [1-13] 1 = gauntlet 2 = machine gun 3 = shotgun 4 = grenade launcher 5 = rocket launcher 6 = lightning gun 7 = railgun 8 = plasmagun 9 = BFG10K 10 = grappling hook 11 = nailgun 12 = proximity mine launcher 13 = chaingun Hope that helps :)

@dynotesting6 жыл бұрын
You absolutely do not need to master the third stage because it is RIDICULOUS and that shit never happens in QL or QC. This is a training platforming level and that's it. yes strafe jumping is important and does separate a novice from a seasoned player, however there are many other aspects like ROCKET JUMPING for instance that can be used with strafe jumping to fly across the map!
@LephariaGaming6 жыл бұрын
The first two challenges of that stage are more skill checks to see if you got the technique down. You are right in that they will probably never show up like this in a real game of Quake, nevertheless they are very vital to master. What made me chuckle is that the last challenge is modelled after the bridge-to-rail jump on Campgrounds (dm6), an actual map. Yes this does come up and it's one of the most infamous spots in all of Quake. You ABSOLUTELY need the skills to make that jump. I agree rocket jumping does exist and is very important too, but keep in mind that rocket jumping 1) damages you 2) takes away valuable ammo and 3) needs a rocket launcher in your arsenal, which might not be there, especially if you just spawned on the bridge on dm6 and need to get to the rail gun. So don't put this challenge of as nonsense just yet.

LephariaGaming Kinda trying to press it just before I land, and release it just after. I think I need to try it at timescale .25 or so, to really find where the acceleration is. I've noticed that sometimes there is no noise of your feet hitting the floor and I think those are the jumps I've done something wrong on. I've never noticed missing footsteps in any other map, so I think it's a feature the designer has put in to let you know you messed a jump up. I just haven't figured out what causes it. It could be mis-timing the jump or having the wrong angle, or landing at the wrong angle. I need to make a bunch of demos and watch them back in slowmo but I'm pretty sure those different sounding footsteps are neant to tell you something. It's like the whoosh sound of the jump, but without the sound of your boots smacking into the floor.

That functionality was put in way after I started playing, so I'm just used to click every time I jump since I learned it that way. Thanks for posting this, was looking to KZbin for something like this due to the fact that Quake Live's built in tutorials suck ass, lol. Explained a hell of a lot more clearly here. I still really wish they had kept actual bunnyhopping from the real Quake in though, it doesn't make any sense at all to remove it, and replace it with strafe jumping as literally the only way to gain speed by junping, I got pretty pissed to find out it's literally impossible to bhop in it. Just doesn't make sense to remove it as bhopping is a much more efficient way to move for sure, and doesn't feel "sticky." I think I could have fun with Quake Live though if I let myself just get used to it.

It's way too easy compared to b-hops in CS:GO.

You should practice speeding up your speaking

That's very true, I tend to ramble a lot. Probably a side effect of English not being my first language, but I know I need to work on that, you're right.

+Дмитрий Бельденков Strafe jumping has been in Quake since the original and throughout Q3M and up to QL. Watch any professional Quake match and you will see players use the movement tricks explained in this and the other videos. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's a cheat. And good god work on your language, you sound insufferable.

+LephariaGaming Used to play Q3 as an attacker in CTF (Jolt, Barrysworld, Clanbase etc) If he thinks you were cheating over things like this (CP9 was heaven to jump in) then he needs to play other FPS (CoD comes to mind) a lot less and practice a lot more :) While we're on the subject: I recon he'd call people who shoot him out of the air with a RL "cheater" as well.
