Lepharia brings you a short first-impressions video, where he shares his thoughts on the new Quake Live Duel map 'Elder'.
Description:
"Deep from within the bowels of the Nameless City lies Elder, a nostalgic Quake 1 inspired arena. This small and simple dreary place is home to more than just it's combatants, for Elder beings lie dormant in waiting, feeding off the pain and torment of it's captives. Locked away within lies 1xRA, 2xYA, 1xMH, and a 1x50hp for players to control, and after two minutes of gameplay two heavy stone doors reveal access to a railgun previously inaccessible. However beware, on Elder more than the usual is up for grabs as one shiny gold key lingers in it's halls for one and only one player to control; control the key and control the map. Designed by Adam 'SyncError' Pyle for Duel, Elder is also available for small FFA and 2v2 TDM matches."

I think this map is one of the best out there: it's a "complete" map. For winning the map you need to have map knowledge (buttons, ecc.), the open area put you in disanvantages if you haven't got a good aim and the items are a big circle (you can set up a good item rotation). But my favourite remains Aerowalk ;)

Iacopo Fedeli Aerowalk is fantastic, but my love for dm6 knows no bounds :) But I agree the map is very wekk designed and a great addition to the pool.

I think you missed the unary switches in the shotgun room and the mega health area ;) These are fairly significant :p

earth _quake Oh god I did, thanks for pointing that out. I actually noticed the little things in my first rundown but somehow it didn't occur to me that I should try shooting the bloody things :D They actually do open up a few very useful paths. Whoops!

You can also push them with your body. I'd be interested to hear your views and tips on the map once you've properly got used to it and played some duels on it, if you're willing :)

I'll see whether or not I get around to that. It might be more as a match analysis of either myself or a pro on that map, but we'll see. At the moment I have a 5-day Path of Exile challenge to play :D

+POSHI I can't tell you how many times I've planned a video and then not done it. So I'd rather not promise anything for the time being. But a new upload would be nice I agree :D

You've done videos on movement that have been quite helpful. However, I can't seem to string together all of the circle and strafe jumping in order to move fluently through the map. Any tips on that? My biggest issue is maintain the speed I build up when it comes time to make a sharp turn. Are the "paths" that require this least that pro players always take? The make it look so easy ...

Moving2Korea Hmm, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Even pros can't move around dm13's narrow corridors at consistent 600 ups. Sometimes you gotta slow down to take a turn. But if you say pros make it look easy I guess you've seen them do it? Do you have an example? Something I often struggle with is running into corners or little ledges and losing speed that way. The only advice I can give to that is to keep practising. Can you do the training maps consistently and reliably? A lot of it is map knowledge as well. As you play a certain map more you'll discover that you move around the map a lot quicker. Keep in mind that especially circle jumps are meant to give you a way of quickly building up speed from standing still. That comes in handy when taking sharp turns. Hope I could help. Feel free to ask more questions.

That does clear things up a bit. I often find myself running into doorways, and like you mentioned, ledges, and corners. Perhaps I I'm mistaken in that I can't actually circle jump properly and only to it on occasion. It takes 2,3 jumps for me to pick up speed and even smaller adjustments are difficult for me. You must be discontinuing the strafe/circle jumping, sharply readjusting where you are looking, circle jumping again, and regaining speed, correct? Maybe you can picture this scenario. Imagine yourself on campgrounds. You're facing red after picking up the lightening gun. You can fly around that curved corridor no problem. I do it in a way that is choppy and much slower. Maybe I'll upload footage and share it with you if I find time. Perhaps it'll just take time to work out. Thanks for you timely response!

Moving2Korea Funny that you mention Campgrounds, because that map is specifically designed to be easy to move around at a relatively fast pace. That corridor you talked of (I believe you mean the one with the shards?) is a good example for that. If you move around a curved path like that you can of course strafe in the same direction multiple times, that goes a long way of getting smooth movement. And the reason while I'm relatively competent on dm6 (as opposed to other maps) is that it's my absolute favourite and I've played it a bazillion times :D So practice is key, just don't give up ;)

And ye, found this convert already, but there is no key in it in Q3. So, key for one map - is exclusive thing of QL, i approve.
