Thank you for the presentation, but I still couldn't see the themes emerging from the analysis. All That I could see were the code being highlighted.
@AR-vh9vw3 жыл бұрын
Tip: when finding codes from your list and placing them under each Theme you can use "split screen" option in Word so that you don't scroll back n forth so much. Also to count the number of times each code appeared you can simply copy the code and paste it in the "Find" function of Word and this way it will show you immediately how times that code appeared in your text.

This method demonstrates the concepts well, regardless of whether MS WORD or Nvivo is used. Thanks. Here's an outline: Software (Nvivo) is better > MS WORD > paper 3 steps: code, clean up code; thematic framework 1-Use a table two columns for interviews as the example line by line coding for 3 -4 interviews 2-make several columns on another file for other interviews showing all codes Start cleaning up - creating standard codes Go back to interview files and put standard codes in Aim: creating a framework 3 - Thematic Framework Recall aim & RQs of example paper Sort all codes in one column (get ready to receive) Start identifying themes; sorts all codes under correct themes Count number of each code under each theme; strength of code under themes sub-theme "Suggestions for improvement" Now use "comment" function (with "find" function) Highiight the found code sentences for "results" chapter [These are not in vivo codes - probably structural coding]

As you indicated, some of our University Authorities don't spend money in this area for students in Ghana. The Librarian in my University had written several times on this. I teach research methods to our postgraduate (MPhil & PhD) in the Music Department. I have a challenge when it comes to DATA ANALYSIS especially for those requiring Qualitative Data Analysis for their research. Your videos (I mean the different related videos) were shared last year for this class and will be given to my students this year in this second semester. Almost all the students last gave me positive feedback on how useful the videos were in clearing their misconceptions and how they helped in consolidating the knowledge and skills required for using Thematic Analysis. With the software, I introduced them to HyperRESEARCH which is free up to 7 cases. Again, it was very beneficial because they watched your presentation on using the NVivo software.

Please what will be your advice to a PhD student in their data analysis stage? I am at wits using Nvivo but seeing your tutorial on using Microsoft, I feel at peace. What are the disadvantages or advantages facing a panel in my defence?
@qualitativeresearcher8 ай бұрын
On one hand, I always encourage the use of NVivo (which can really be learned in 1 to 2 hours once you understand that you will not need 90% of its functions, apart from just a handful of options), and on the other I say that at the end of the day, you should do what suits you best, so you will need to decide. I don't think there are serious implications regarding the panel, you can justify this and explain that you believed doing it completely manually like that helped you understand the data more and focus on it, etc. Like I said, I still think NVivo is always the better option, but for some it just does not work at all

Hey Dr Kriukow, thank you very much for that video and the rest of them, they are quite amazing! I would like to ask if, in the initial coding phase, if we are supposed to code things that are irrelevant to the research question/purpose? Do I code them and then review to clear out those irrelevant or I ignore them at all? Thank you! Symeon MSc student in Occupational Therapy
@qualitativeresearcher2 жыл бұрын
Hi there Symeon, yes, ideally you do want to code that too - specifically because at the initial stage of the analysis you are, at least in theory, not in a position to clearly state what is, in fact, relevant and what is not. Of course there are extreme cases where something is Definitely 100% Not Relevant, but recognizing this, I think, comes with experience. To be sure and safe, I would say that it is best to code something irrelevant and later delete it than not to code it and later miss something important

@insearchofself96164 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in a simplistic manner! It is a huge support for novice researchers like me. I have a question for you. Generally, it takes me some time to learn new technology. I was considering to learn NVivo for my data analysis and I have purchased your NVivo training class. But this looks quite simple and easy to follow as I am already familiar to WORD. However, as an emerging researcher what would be your suggestion for me? I have 2 years to finish my PhD, FYI. Many Thanks!
@qualitativeresearcher4 жыл бұрын
My suggestion would definitely be to learn NVivo. As you know from my NVivo class, it is not That difficult to learn it, and being able to use this software may really help you later in your career. Doing your PhD research is one thing, but finding any kind of research job afterwards is another, and there aren't any research jobs that would not require your knowledge of either NVIVO or MAXQDA (but more often NVivo), so my suggestion is don't give up and keep learning NVivo :) Ms Word may be good for a Master student who will only do research once for their studies and will not ever need it again

Great to hear! And yes, I can imagine Excel being better at this. Lots of my clients or students I work with use Excel, I am just somehow averse to Excel and never been good at it, but I agree 100% with what you said!
@Ella-lk2se Жыл бұрын
It is very helpful. Although NVIVO can make the codes and the categories more easily retrieved, word comes handy for many. I would like to know how to compare the consistency of two coders. In NVIVO, it is easy to do the coding comparison. Thanks!

I think this will depend on individual strategies, there is no standardized procedure for comparing two coders' work when using MS Word (at least not that I'm aware of)

I'd do separate word file for each transcript, and thus separate tables too. Eventually though, after you're done with the coding, the aim is to bring all these codes into 1 file (what may help to know where they come from is to use different colours or different fonts, or both)
