Although you are not expecting to really "Discuss" your findings in the Results chapter, it is still expected to have a reasonable amount of "your voice" there. This does not necessarily mean discussing the findings, but just helping the reader navigate through the chapter and make sense of your results, that's what I mean by your voice in this particular chapter

Hi and thank you for the comment - I am not too familiar with observation, but I recently talked to Dr Huayi Huang about this, there is a video in which we discuss observations as a method. Otherwise, I will also consider recording a video about this, once I do some catching up on the topic myself ! :)

Your videos are extremely helpful, thank you. I am currently conducting a study and I was wondering if I can do thematic analysis based only on scenes from films (no transcripts that is, just observations)?
@qualitativeresearcher8 ай бұрын
Absolutely! it can be performed on pretty much any kind of data, including observations or scenes from films as in your case (in which case I still think that these scenes, or whatever they describe, would ultimately be labelled in some way - so essentially coded, then these codes would help you develop themes - although in this case the line between codes and themes would be pretty vague - but don't worry about this

What happens when a code can be placed in 2 different themes, e.g.: 'enjoying poker games with friends' - being poker under leisure activities and friends under the importance of getting together with friends. Can we duplicate this label? Please, answer this message, I am in the middle of a project!! Thank you for such a great content!
@qualitativeresearcher2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I addressed it in another video. You can code the same content, and same quotes as more than 1 code/theme. This happens a lot. You can even (although this is not that common, it IS possible) have the same exact sub-theme under 2 themes. Let's say that Anxiety is both a result of encounters with Native English speakers and a Reason why someone (a migrant) avoids these encounters, I may have 2 themes "Reasons for avoiding encounters with NES" and "Effects of encounters with NES" and then have ANXIETY under each of these 2 themes. Hope this helps

Liked and subscribed. Suffered writers block for weeks on my msc thesis after finishing my coding/thematic framework. Worked with interviews and focus groups and now made decision to apply the two provinces as differentiator between data and themes. But one question though. My thematic framework is closely linked to my interview/focus group topic structure and even the literature review, is this good or bad?

@qualitativeresearcher8 ай бұрын
I think it may be difficult to discuss more than one major theme in one paragraph to be honest, but of course I am not familiar with your exact context and data, so if you are doing this the right way, then why not
@deborahbradley42392 жыл бұрын
So for my university mini ta report we have a separate section for analysis and discussion. So the analysis section is strictly for reporting the evidence of themes via quotes from the data. But for the discussion, how do I relate my themes back to the existing research in this area? And should I relate back again to my dataset or stick to the themes and relate just them to existing research?? I'm so confused and have zero guidance for this section...
@qualitativeresearcher2 жыл бұрын
I have a video about the discussion chapter. There will be a bit of both - you will talk about the themes and the results that you presented in the results (or your "analysis") chapter, and relate them back tothe literature that you outlined in the literature review chapter
@deborahbradley42392 жыл бұрын
@@qualitativeresearcher thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I'll look for your other video. This is perhaps the most difficult piece of work yet in terms of content to include (and a distinctly vague set of student notes!)

Yes, you can do both (analyze the content of what they say, as well as How they say it), and if your university allows it, you can have the results and discussion together. I like to do it this way, but this does depend on the university guidelines

There is no rule for how long a quote should be but in any case you should try to be reasonable. It is ok to have a longer quote every now and then, but not too often , and also make sure to guide teh reader through the quote (explain what it contains, why it's here, what to pay attention to, etc.)

Do you have any tips on building confidence in your research? I’m struggling to feel that my work is of value and not stating the obvious.
@qualitativeresearcher3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it is not. Look, even if we conduct a study that replicates another study, and the findings are similar/the same, there is always value in it, because we are adding more evidence to the existing evidence, thus helping strengthen the claims the existing studies made. There is always value, like I said - even if you think about the literature review chapter/section alone - the fact that you have it means there is an up-to-date review of the topics you are investigating. This, again, is very important and may help others (once your study is published or just finished and available online)
@qualitativeresearcher3 жыл бұрын
Feel confident in your research, remember why you started it and be persistent. Even if you do not plan to publish it in the "traditional" (i.e. boring and extremely difficult), academic way, you can use bits of it and publish blog articles that others may find useful

There is no rule as to whether your findings should be the same or different from previous findings, and none of these is the "ideal" outcome - if they are the same, you can argue that your findings support the previous findings, and if they are different, you can argue that your study contributed new knowledge to the topic
