Thank you for this video. I would like to find out, for the focused coding, do we merge all the codes from the transcripts we have so far, or it's for individual transcripts?
@qualitativeresearcher4 ай бұрын
the former - the goal is to have all codes together. you don't have to merge them all, but yes - keep them together, group them, merge when necessary - not on the individual transcript level but as a whole

Hi, I have a question at 25:00, why not merge with another code but delete it? I missed some parts of your instructions but the videos are too long to review so I have to ask, if you see my comments. Thank you.

Hi, this is because I already coded this as one of the challenges, and here I realized I do not need it in the "good things" group of codes

Thank you, doing some research on VR Limitations as a prelude to virtual reality shopping, this is very useful video on merging codes with NVivo done some of this and managed to merge some codes. My question is with initial theme generation how many codes should make up a theme? I have generated codes from 150 reviews, working on creating initial themes. I got 33 codes but many are under main codes with sub codes. Now with initial theme generation, I got one with only (3 main codes w/ sub codes) that make up initial theme but in contrast another includes most of the main codes and sub codes which seems a bit much.

Hi and apologies for the delay. there's no rule really, it depends on how much you want to go in depth of a given concept (expressed by a theme). sometimes a theme may only have 3 or so sub-themes (or codes, depends how you want to call these), but sometimes it may have over 20, if you believe that for your particular study it is indeed important to list all these things. E.g. if I wanted to explore the impact of remote learning on students, and had plenty of codes describing different emotions that were affected, I would probably merge them all and call them something like "affected emotional wellbeing" that would bee a sub-theme of a theme "the impact of remote learning". If , however, in the same study the emotional wellbeing and impact were at the core of the study, I would very much be interested in listing all these emotions, because maybe that's exactly what I am trying to establish. Thus, I may end up having a theme like "the impact of remote learning on emotional wellbeing", and then , as sub-themes, list a whole bunch of codes describing separate emotions. Hope this helps! :)

Just right click, "paste" (after you copied the codes first of course)

I have around 500 initial codes and that's just only one interview T_T is there another way to get to focused codes without being so overwhelmed?
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
500 for 1 interview is quite a lot so I would just try to organize them a little bit already and do some of the things I discussed in this video, before moving on to the second one
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
PS You did not do anything wrong so don't worry, but it is a large number so I would suggest trying to reduce it a bit first

@@qualitativeresearcher I used line-by-line coding by Charmaz for grounded theory. Hence, I ended up with sooo many codes :"(
