Just beginning my Diploma in Counselling in the UK in 3 weeks time, having just finished my Level 3 Counselling Skills . I lived with an ex - husband presenting with Covert Narcissist behaviours on a spectrum for 26 years. I am well versed, and have been through counselling sessions - CBT - myself - 33 sessions so far. So when I qualify in 2021 , I will be specialising in working with survivors...

That's such an important issue, Debbie! A misinformed and inadequate therapist can actually turn things for worse by making the client reliving the minimization of intuitions/feelings or the normalization of the abuse. I had this experience, I suspect the therapist herself was a narcissist though (not surprisingly, I was a narc magnet). I just disagree that not having a deep insight on the subject in grad school justifies this lack. If we were talking about a brain injure and the doctor said: "Well, I just had an introduction on the theme in med school, sorry your friend died", would it be okay? I think many therapist have a hard time conceiving evil, so it makes hard for them to go deep into the narcissist world. Looooove your videos, thank you for your work! ❤️

Debbie do you know any therapist in the Phoenix area that understands not only narcissism but also how terribly sick and disabled it can make you? It took me 60 years of abuse to finally put a name on the crazy making but it has made me so very sick! Disabled from my job 7 years ago and have been mostly house/bed bound with severe fibromyalgia, anxiety, migraines and a host of other problems. I managed to move out but now have literally no one. I’m so sick I have very small fragments of time where I feel good enough to take care of even the smallest things of everyday life

Hi Debbie, you had asked if anyone had any ideas on how you could go about getting your book into university level psych programs. I think this is a great idea, and that, as I see things personally, covert narcissism is both the most prominent form of narcissism affecting the health of our society today, as well as it is the most under-diagnosed and most universally unrecognized. Your book could go a long way. So in a small effort to help, I'll copy two links below. One will be for the best masters level programs(in the US) and the other will be a state by state program search for both masters and graduate programs. This will obviously involve quite a bit of knocking on doors, so crafting an email that just needs the name of the contact personalized could save a lot of time. PS Don't get deterred by rejection. You are introducing something new. It's going to happen. Just keep going and eventually people at one university will begin talking to people at another, and the dominoes will fall in your favor. Eventually, this will turn into common knowledge. So good luck, and without further ado, here are the links. www.gradschools.com/masters/psychology www.bestpsychologydegrees.com/in/ * Make sure to scroll down for program listings ** Also, here is the search I used in case you are looking for more info(or better info): www.google.com/search?q=list+of+all+psychology+masters+programs&oq=list+of+every+psycholo&aqs=chrome.5.69i57j0l5.10237j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

first you'll have to dissuade all narcissists from becoming therapists.

So true, I so distrusted my own gut feeling at my therapist, funny thing is that he taught me get in contact with my feelings and eventually made me realize who he was. He kept getting angry at me, it seemed and pushed me and would also ask "how do you feel about me?" and I used to say "nothing" and it was true I felt nothing. To me he was neutral and I wanted him to stay neutral and wanted to use him for me, and felt that was very healthy, I was not supposed to feel anything about him, right? It was about me, for the first time in my life I was doing this for me, doing this therapy for me. But he kept pushing me, saying when I blushed or something "what do you feel about me now, are you angry at me now, why did you look down when you said that..." and I would always go blank. Then finally it hit me, I went blank when thinking of him, just like anything else uncomfortable in my life ever since I was a kid. I would see white when trying to udnerstand what I was feeling inside, see nothing, in fact I would freeze and my mind be empty. Completely cold emotionally. It hit me one time, that he was actually causing me to feel really bad and "go blank". I was always anxious before a therapi session and always felt a bit weird afterwards too, often I would cry. I told myself this was good because I was dealing with some deep issues. But in fact it was scary, it was really scary because he was so weird this guy. Every time I would mention the word narcissist in sessions he would change the subject to revolve around me .I told myself that was to keep focus on my feelings but in fact I later wondered, he doesnt like this sucbject at all!!! At one time I wrote down a whole list of things to discuss, stuff that had been eye opening between sessions and was based on what we talked about (I thought it was good to really use the therapy session and learn) but I only got to read 2 things after that he interrupted me and I never got back on track again. It was always like he led the whole session. He was so pushy. I thought "thats probably why they call dynamiska samtal in Swedish" Which is translated as "dynamic talks" because it was like a rollercoaster ride, he would push push push and I would be up and down emotionally for 45 minutes until I left!
