Those aren't backer boxes. A backer box is sealed. That blue part is just a guard to keep things like insulation and wires in the wall from touching the speaker components.

Great thorough review as always! Im definitely a fan of good Inwalls, and have installed quite a few sets now. They do get a bad rep as people generally don't spend good money on them, or install them incorrectly. When a quality unit is installed right, they can sound great. One thing I have found dramatically improves the performance of an inwall, is lining the inner wall cavity behind the speaker completely in Dynamat sound deadening, easy to apply and stops many rattles etc.

I don't think I like the permanence of in-wall speakers but it was interesting to see how special planning would need to be done when installing it horizontally. I've heard you mention "Pink Noise" before when calibrating your speakers, what is that and why is it useful?

I have the Elac Debut 2.0 (DB62(F), DB52(R), DC62(C), A42(F&R) in 7.2.4 in my bedroom. Having these in-wall would have been beautiful but a lot of work. Your speakers blend very well!

I’m planning on 5.1.2 in wall speaker due to space, which one do you recommend Klipsch RP pro 250rpw for LCR and 650rpw or these Elac dc51 for lcr and 61 for surround or InwallTech high end HD 525 LCr, 640a for surround. Please help me to decide. I need good speaker under 2500$ for 5.1.2 I already have 1 Martin Logan sub.

Yeah, I've had many many hours of home renovation projects under my belt over the years, so I'm pretty confident in my handy work skills to a certain degree. So it just depends. No shame in hiring out, though. 😀

I like Sonance and have used a few pairs in the Visual performance 8" inwall/in ceiling range and the Symphony range, they are good higher up in the range but I'd say you would need to spend significantly more to get to the level of the Elacs, value for money looks great.

Those aren't backing boxes as a true backing box would be sealed. These are just protective covers and sound will still leak out into the wall cavity.
