Thank you for the video. I am a premium buyer. I looked at Pleasureway and Airstream and was very disappointed by both. (I can give you a list of reasons if you're interested). I chose a Midwest Automotive Passage 144. Highest quality by far of all rvs I looked at. I'm surprised Midwest Automotive didn't make your list of premium rvs.

Neil, thank you for your excellent contributions through this channel. I have been researching and learning about RVs for two years in anticipation of making my first Class B purchase and have found your channel one of the most valuable, honest and intelligent sources. I would be grateful if you would dedicate an episode to the dealer experience. For example, in the Salt Lake City area where I live, Camper World has bought up the two largest RV dealers. There reputation is horrendous. There are thousands of complaints online and everyone I talk to who has dealt with them shares their own horror story. Now there are no other Class B dealers in this market. The buying experience is unsavory and the service is deplorable. I have a feeling that many people do not discover this until it is too late. I would welcome your thoughts.

Instinctively, I was thinking about these quadrants but I did not visualize it the same way. But I am essentially a performance value internalized buyer. I look at quality and performance but I’m willing to go for mid-level instead of top of the line for as long as the features and quality I want is present in the rig.

Alex, that so good to hear that you've found the video useful. Knowing what kind of buyer I am also helped me a great deal. As I mentioned in the video I thought I was a performance buyer only to find out after making a purchase decision based on performance that I was actually a premium buyer. It was a costly mistake. As you go along your journey please keep us informed on what vans you're considering and how they measure up to your performance buying mindset.

I think you nailed it Neil with your quadrants. I didn't even have to pause the video and guessed we were Premium buyers. We bought a PW last summer and I agree with you in thinking that the quality is better than Air Stream. That said, there is one thing I wish PW would address which is their window shades. And Mercedes or PW needs to address the lousy stereo system and lack of vehicle alarm. We spent $3k upgrading so we now have alarm, satellite radio, CarPlay, better speakers, better navigation, bigger screen. Seems like a no brainer to me.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Energymaven, thanks for your comment! There's a great video by an actual 2017 Airstream Interstate Grand Tour Ext buyer where he shows all the quality issues with his purchase. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYvZZItrorykask When I was out looking I also looked at an Airstream and was surprised by some of their fit and finish behind the veneer. I found missing screws and bolts rattling around and messes of cables with little pride put into their design and placement. It was as if the shiny cabinets and aluminum should be enough. I hope this video helps to push class b manufacturers to do a better job on quality control. I agree that PW needs to up their game with regards to components. As I mention in the video it isn't all about fit and finish (which I think PW does better than anyone else). For us premium buyers there is a level of components and upgrades that needs to be addressed as well and PW would do well to listen to those of us who have shelled out our hard earned dollars to buy their products. Well stated!
@energymaven7 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's quite a few issues he went through. He should have gotten a PW. The truth is, I didn't even discover them until very late in our research.

You mean you didn't discover Pleasure-way right? They are so small compared to the other manufacturers who at this point are all owned by larger conglomerates. I'm pulling for them as the scrappy underdog but they are going to have to significantly up their game and play smarter if they hope to survive.

You're more than welcome Mu5tang5! My parents are in the same boat. They have a big diesel pusher class A and are thinking of downsizing to either a class b or a class C. Great useful information. Sometime, in the near future, I think it would be quite useful if you did the same type of assessment on Camper-Van chassis, motors and transmissions. We have had 5 motorhomes, 1 class A, 2 camper-vans, 1 class B and 1 class B+. The worst experience was with a Class A using a large block Chevy V-8, that blew on us. The best experience was on the class B + with the Ford Triton V-10, 5 speed transmission. As a retired Human Factors Engineer I also look quite closely to the "man-machine interface" on the various internal systems. Thanks for a great video, but try to keep your hands down a bit. You are an excellent speaker.

I seem to be in the lower left quadrant, that you called CONVENIENCE. I would describe it as having a minimum list of required features with some price sensitivity. Less interest in advanced features at high price. Hence we have pointed at Winnebago's higher line ERA and some lower models of the mid-quality manufacturers.

Thank you. I have not yet made my first purchase and your analysis tool is quite helpful. I thought that I leaned toward performance, and was my initial answer. I really like the progressive thinking options offered by RoadTrek. Yet, after hearing your personal story, I realized that my hesitation was because I really prefer the quality of Pleasure-Ways. In the back of my mind is a KZbinr who did a great job of showing that the practical promise of solar is oversold. I wish I remembered who it was. Yet, I wish that Pleasure-Way was a bit more progressive. Gravity may never fail, but there are times when it is helpful in dumping uphill. I prefer induction cooking over propane. I have lived with propane, but it is a preference and one that I should be able to satisfy at that price-point. So, thank you for helping to determine the target audience for these manufacturers.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Dan, really nice reading your comment. I think there are a lot of potential buyers like yourself. Agree that solar is oversold and the negativity surrounding generators is also hyped up. I agree that Pleasureway needs to move out of their comfort zone a bit more and they are trying. They recently released their AGS (automatic generator start) to compete with Voltstart and they are the first (and only) class b manufacturer to offer lithium ion batteries as standard on all their products. These are great moves on their part and demonstrate their willingness to challenge Roadtrek in the product leadership category. Great comments. Thanks for sharing.

I think one point that was missed that is also very important to me (and might be important to others) is for those wanting to be part of a community of other owners who bought the same rigs. Roadtrek has the best community out there with other owners in it! You can go on a Roadtrek FB Page and ask any questions about your rig and within seconds you can get answers! There are also Roadtrek rallies you can attend. It’s one of the best perks about owning a Roadtrek!! Even the CEO of Roadtrek is on the Roadtrek lifestyle page answering questions to Roadtrek owners! I don’t see any other RV CEO doing that!! The Chevy Roadtrek Owners FB group is great and I learn so much from other Chevy owners! (I created the Chevy owners group back in June of 2017 when I ordered my Roadtrek and there are already almost 1,800 members in it) And thousands and thousands of more in the other Roadtrek Facebook groups!

That's a great point, Tracy. The Pleasureway group is private which is silly to me. They need to just have an open group so that prospective buyers can join and ask questions. There are active groups for both brands on ClassB Forum (www.classbforum.com/).

Hi Neil, thank you for your information. My husband and I are just starting to consider Class B motor homes to purchase over the next year or so. I do love the Pleasure Way models from what I've seen on video, but dealers are at least 10 hrs drive away. We live in NB, Canada. They are also a little too pricey. Locally, choices are limited. What do you think of the quality and functionality of the 2019 Coachman Crossfit 22'? Our goal is to travel around to National/State & Provincial Parks in Canada and US for a few months at a time. Some boondocking. Some camp sites. Reliability, functionality, adequate storage, natural light, good quality are important to us. Any other recommendations for models here in Canada? Thank you!

Coachmen quality is okay. i'm unhappy with their 1 year warranty. I have a review of the crossfit (and later galleria) coming. Roadtrek has okay quality. Midwest automotive has pretty good quality. you may want to consider a safari condo out of Quebec but their wait list is 1 year I believe. or you can look for a used pleasure-way that's also a great route to go.

What a perfect description for my rationale in shifting from the Roadtrek to the Pleasure-way. I too wish that I had had your tool when I decided to buy my Agile last year. Though, since it was also my first RV, I’m not sure I would have been able to make proper use of it. I wonder if, for the RV ignorant, even those who may be more premium buyers, it might make sense to start out more on the “value” end. Though I lost money in shifting so quickly from an Agile to an Ascent, I almost feel like I the Agile was my “apprentice” vehicle.....definitely don’t think I could have been as clear about what I liked and didn’t without having had that intimate time with the Agile. In short, part of how I learned I was a more “premium” buyer (according to your scale) was by spending time in the “performance” RV. In any case, this is a fabulous exercise and helps me feel better about the fact that I’ve got to wait several long months for my new Ascent. Thank you!
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
It’s a good point about starting out with a value priced van. Maybe even a used van. Of course many may not have the funds to buy one RV and then upgrade.
@c.bailey14587 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility Yes, you’re right. And it also occurs to me that another way folks might figure this out before actually buying an RV is by using your tool and then extrapolating from what they know about their other purchasing tendencies. Am guessing, e.g., that Apple product buyers (like me) probably fall into the “premium” category on lots of things. Am not suggesting this is a good think, BTW, it’s got pluses and minuses for sure, but good clues to have about oneself. More ways of figuring out what sort of RV will tick one’s boxes without taking the plunge. Great tool!
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
well that's a great point you make. when I reflect back upon many of my purchases I fall into the premium category as well. that should be a good hint that buying an RV is likely no different. i really wish i had gone through my own exercices the first time because it cost me a lot of money to offload a practically brand new rig to upgrade to the Ascent. That's one of the primary reasons why I'm doing this channel because $140k is more than I paid for my college education lol.

Hi Neil, I’m curious, with the 2019 models available now, would you change your opinions about which manufacturer fits into each category? I’m seeing most now offer solar, lithium, voltstart (or whatever the make calls it) ducked heating etc. I like the layout of the Travato kl because I would like twin beds and the ability to bring little ones with me, it has extra seat belts in the front of the coach. Your thoughts?

I bought my 2017 Airstream Tommy Bahama edition about a year ago. Airstream was not my first choice. E-trek from Roadtrek was the first choice. However, the Roadtrek dealer treated me badly, like I was not entitled to have a RV. Airstream dealer was much better. They let me have a test drive and it appeared inside RV looked very good. I paid $165K including taxes. I thought that was a good deal b/c they gave me $20K discount. I am not a good negotiator so I don't have any complaints if I paid more, may be around $10K. Nevertheless, I did not expect problems after I got it. The way the dealer's service dept treating me was not up to the price I paid. Driver side molding came out and the step for sliding door did not work. Each time I had to beg them for the repairs. Later I found out the Lemon Law does not apply to RVs. That is main reason they treat their customer that way after they sold. After three times, I decided not to go unless I have major breakdowns. I rather pay to other local RV dealers for minor repairs instead of facing insult from them. My problems with Airstream are 1. Monitor Panel: 0, 1/3, 2/3, full are only available. Under this condition, 70% tank and 99% tank are not different. So which one is it? Very inconvenient. 2. Design of seat and bed. As seats, they are fine, but to a bed, you can find too much holes between edge. I had to spread something to not to feel uncomfortness. 3. Macerator pump did not work sometimes depend on outside temperature. Also I have to struggle to put back the hose to limited spaced box. 4. Sound of air conditioning is so loud. Very difficult to endure. I am still learning about this RV. At least I am happy with the car itself. Good powerful ride, comfortable chair and good heating and air conditioning. I will learn from you and others for my second act.

Kee Lee, first of all I'm sorry you've experienced all those problems with your Airstream Interstate. SEcond, I'd like to thank you for sharing your experiences here on Ultramobility. I think many will find your experiences helpful. Having said that I too had 2 terrible experiences with Roadtrek dealers. They also treated me with a lack respect. With my Roadtrek I also had problems with my electric step not retracting properly. I never liked the macerator pump as it was noisy and took too long to empty the tanks. I've heard another owner of an Interstate complain about the bed as well. Stay tuned, this next week's episode is about quality!
@tracy30667 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility I think this shows another important thing to think about. And that’s picking a good dealer. I’m smack dab in the middle of 2 Roadtrek dealers in opposite directions. I researched both and picked the one I heard great things about and they have been great to deal with! If both weren’t good I would have flown to Florida and went to Sunshine RV and got my Roadtrek. They have also have a great reputation of taking care of their customers!

The Travato layout makes the most sense to me for two people. I like being able to use the driver & passenger seats for dining & leave beds set up. Quality needs to improve. Too many issues in Facebook Travato Forum.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
My next episode will also give a nod to Travato! I like the 59K layout the bed in the G layout doesn't work for a couple. AGree about quality. Next episode will be all about quality. Winnebago has good quality control but has to cut corners on fit and finish and assembly in order to remain the low price leader. Buyers just need to understand this and be comfortable with this before buying. Still, Winnebago's quality is much higher than Carado! Wait for my next video!

Hi, MrEnigel. I'm glad that you've found my video useful - that's why I make them! I too thought I was a performance buyer until I purchased based on that only to find that I regretted my decision. All the bells and whistles didn't matter to me - I wanted a premium brand. So, I sold my first RV (and took a deep hit) and purchased a PleasureWay. I've been much happier. Of course it is also possible that a premium buyer can have buyer's remorse as well thinking they want premium only to find that they really wanted all those bells and whistles. The Lexor is a great great little class B. It is almost identical to the Ascent in layout but has a nicer bathroom. Plus you get an extra foot of length which is nice. Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts with the rest of the viewers!

Hi, Foster Animals. No doubt LTV is high quality. Right up there with Pleasureway however in this video I'm mainly talking about class b vans and not class C motorhomes. LTV used to be in the class b market but they existed a few years back and now only focus on class C vans. Great question and thanks for asking it.
@ldyvic6 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility , Thank you for the quick response. I thought the 22 & 24 FT models of both companies (PW & LTV) were called B+. I am brand new to all if the RV lingo/terms. I just last month started the research and prep into getting an RV. I am partially disabled so I need to be careful in my selections. As I am now on SSI, it will need to be my transportation and my home. Your channel is being a great help in teaching me the things I will need to know to be successful in the choice and maintenance of the RV. On a side note, the 360 camera videos are awesome. They are very helpful for people like me who are on bed rest 3 or 4 days a week.It is like having a magic window to the world. Please keep those coming. That is one of the main reasons I am looking to get an RV. If I am going to be stuck in a bed for 3 or 4 days, I should be someplace pretty to look at.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you find my videos helpful. I will definitely continue to make the 360 degree videos. There is no legitimate class called "B plus" at least not according to the United States and Canadian governments. There are only 3 classes of motorhomes: A, B and C. Class A rigs are built on a heavy duty commercial truck or commercial bus chassis. Class Bs are built on a van chassis and Class C is built on a light duty truck chassis. "Class B+" is a marketing term conjured up by motorhome manufacturers to try to differentiate their products from the competition. Generally speaking what they mean is "our class C doesn't have the berth over the cab". If you look at most "class b+" motorhomes you'll see that they are basically a class C without the berth over the cab. That's the only difference. By law, they are classified as a Class C motorhome and that is the way they would be registered with the DMV. Hope that helps!

@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Lap Wah Lee. Maybe... If you're full timing then one thing you're likely going to want is a vehicle that both blends in (for those times when you most stealth or urban camp) and is also easy to get around in urban areas (parking on the street in standard spots or in parking lots). In those cases, a standard class B van is better. However, you're right in that the B+ vans have a lot more living room. We're the Russos have a channel about living out of their Class B van. They give a lot of good reasons why they downsized from a Class A down to a smaller 19 foot class B. You may want to check them out.

Isn't this partially model specific? The Roadtrek E-Trek, for example, has all the features (Under-hood gen, Lithium Batteries, Volt-Start, & Tons of solar) and the high price to match. It also has the compressor fridge that PW lacks.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Rob. Not sure I understand the question? I'd classify Roadtrek currently as manufacturer performance buyers should look at due to their product leadership (for all the features you mention). They are not the least expensive and they are not a luxury brand. They have a range of different products at differing price levels but their low end models will never match Winnebago in terms of price/quality and their high end models will never match Airstream and Pleasureway in terms of build quality and craftsmanship. Does this make sense?

Hey, Scott. Airstream is a great premium brand and not at all in the same league as WB. You might want to see if there are any dealers in a different state that offers a fly and buy program. I know some dealers here in California offer that. Just a thought! Thanks for your comment!

OMG! I’m definitely in a premium quadrant and I’ve been searching for Airstream & Pleasure Way. However, I’m more leaning toward to PW Plateau TS, since it’s a foot less than AS and no electric steppers! I love your channel! Great videos and very informative, thank you!!! 😇🙏

Siman, glad you find my channel helpful! Thanks for watching. Agree with you on the power step. Had one on my Roadtrek CS Adventurous and it broke. Those things aren't durable enough - salt and water gets up there and shorts things out. No reason why they're needed. A fixed step always works!
@Siman7277 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility Exactly!!! One less thing to worry! It’s kinda annoying as a matter of fact 😜 What do think of having a composting toilet (nature’s head)? Will it work in wet bath? If yes, will it be possible to turn the black tank to combine with the gray tank? Thanks!!
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan yet of compositing toilets. I think they are finicky. I get their environmental appeal but they have some things to work out. Are you asking if it's possible to combine the black with the gray to make one large gray tank?
@Siman7277 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility Yes! Either one big gray tank or turning the black into gray to have two gray tanks. I have watched a few videos about the nature’s head compositing toilet, they are great! You only need to dump once every few months. No smell whatsoever! I plan to do more boondocking than RV Parks. Live in full time with 2 cats LOL. Will be interesting to find out...
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi Siman. I'm not sure about modding to combine the black and gray tanks. Probably is possible but each RV has custom tank fittings so you'd need to examine that closely. Also would void the warranty if that matters to you. Tank management isn't really that big of a deal. The key for me is to locate nearby facilities where you can preferably dump for free (like local water treatment plans) Once you figure that out tanks are nice, clean and convenient.

Advanced RV. Yes I know, $235,000.00 is pricey for a class B, but the customer gets to design it the way they want it, and the technology rivals if not exceeds Roadtrek. It is the Marathon Coach of the B class industry. That being said, I do appreciate PW, and am looking forward to their future products. If I am not mistaken, I believe Dean in one of his recent videos mentioned that the lithium batteries can be charged with the engine alternator in 2018 models. A plus indeed.

Hey transporter78213 - thanks for the comment. I believe even the 2017's charge from the alternator as well. I see mine recharging as I'm driving. it is a big help as it tops up the batteries before arriving at your final destination.

Ultramobility awesome. I have been aware of PW, but until recently I haven't given them serious consideration. Now that I am SINGLE, it would make sense to look at a coach for ONE. ;) I plan on living in my coach for weeks if not months at a time when I retire here soon. I find the MB model with the electric sofa to be quite sufficient. As a matter of fact I would be content with JUST the sofa. I don't think they would construct one without the MB. LOL!

@@transporter78213 George of Humble Road is exactly who I thought of when you mentioned Advanced RV. The van he is building will be at the very top of the line, and what a treat for anyone who buys it and has it's complete build history on video tape! I'm very curious what the price will be too. Personally I much prefer a custom build to any of the premanufactured offerings out there. In my opinion they are ignoring the nuevo full timers who prefer urban-friendly, high tech, sleek and light eurovans with beefy solar arrays. They don't want their grandad's rv with the microwaves and black tanks and propane.

I must admit, you have some excellent content on this channel. I've just discovered your videos and have been binge watching everything. :) Can't wait for more. I have been researching RVs for a while now, and recently came to the decision that a Class B would make the most sense for many of the same reasons you decided to go that route; second vehicle, ease of getting around, etc. Plus I too work from home, and would love to be able to use this as a mobile office from time to time. My wife and I love the extra room, and quality of the Leisure Travel Vans, but realistically they're not practical....for me. Quality means a lot to me and Pleasure-Way has always stood out, but I am still a bit price conscious. I really can't see going with anything other than a PW, so I'm leaning toward their Lexor TS model. Based on the ProMaster chassis, it's less expensive than the Sprinter based models. The nearest PW dealer is a few hundred miles away and I haven't had a chance to make a trip to test drive any of the models, so I'm hoping you can answer a few questions before I get out there. 1. What's your opinion on the Lexor TS and have you had a chance to drive it? Length wise, it's only about a foot longer than the Ascent, but I'd expect a similar "feel" to both vehicles. 2. What's your opinion on buying used/pre-owned? Being price conscious, I'm a believer in letting someone else take the depreciation hit. My last couple cars have both been low mileage, short term lease returns that I swiped up from dealerships for a good price. Looking through RVTrader, I've noticed a few low mileage (less than 20K) 2016 & 2017 models at decent prices. I appreciate any feedback you may have and thanks for great videos!

Hi, Andrew. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with the community here and thank you for letting me know that you find my channel valuable. That's the whole reason why I do this channel. I didn't have any channel like this when I purchased my RV and I wish I did. Here's the short answer to your questions. I will be doing a future episode where I cover the similarities and differences between the Ascent and Lexor so stay tuned! 1. I LOVE the Lexor TS. I think it is one of the best layouts; best quality and best values on the class b market. Hands down. It is only a foot longer than the Ascent which means that it gains all the same benefits as the Ascent in terms of being able to drive and use it as a second car. It will fit in a normal parking space on the street (just so as most spots are 20 feet) and it will not take up two parking spaces in parking lots. But, that extra foot of length is put to good use in the Lexor. The bathroom is the best I've seen on *any* class B. It puts the Ascent's bathroom to shame with corian counter tops and a stainless steal sink (I have a plastic one in the Ascent!). The fit and finish and layout is nearly identical to the Ascent but at thousands of dollars less. There are a couple things I don't like the Lexor: a) it doesn't have the same safety features as the Ascent: lane keep assist, blind spot detection and collision detection. b) I don't care for the overhead bin above the cab. I hit my head on the one in my CS Adventurous all the time and vowed that my next RV wouldn't have it. c) I don't like the step up into the cab and into the lounge area. I like a clear path from front to back - really helps as night not tripping over things. Other than those things it's about perfect. 2. You'll get a better deal for sure on pre-owned. If you go the pre-owned route see if the seller purchased an extended warranty. Also, obviously the lower the mileage the better. The truth is many sellers purchased an RV and never really used it or used it lightly. That means you're going to get something that is almost like new but at a fraction of the cost. It's a good route to go but really check out the rig before you buy it. See if they have any service records and ask what they've had to take it in for. Also, if they are aware of any known problems. Ask why they are selling it. I sold my 2014 Roadtrek CS Adventurous that I purchased for $125k with only 7000 miles for $89k with an extended warranty! That rig was pristine and the buyers got a great deal! Still, if you can afford it then new is always nice. You know what you get. Good luck with your purchase and do let us know how things are going. I'm sure the community here would love to hear your experiences!

Ultramobility Thank you for the response and confirmation on the Lexor. Like you, I’ve struggled to find good reviews, only sales pitches from dealerships, so your advice is much appreciated. I am a little disappointed by the lack of safety features on the ProMaster series, but I think it’s something I can live without for now. I’ll be waiting on your comparison video on the two models, till then, keep the great content coming.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Andrew. You can buy an after market lane keep assist and collision detection system that mounts a forward facing camera on the dash. It provides 2 of the three safety features the MB has. Winnebago used this on their Era. They opted to not go with MB option and use an after market. You may want to check it out.

Very informative content. I've just finished binge watching everything I could find on Class B's in preparation for shifting from water to land, and your content is by far the best and most logically presented. Is there a reason that Coach House doesn't get much of mention in these comparisons? I realise CH are mostly Class C /B plus but I've recently been looking at a Platinum 220 and it seems to be a top notch product.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Old Matelots! I appreciate hearing your thoughts about my channel. It means a lot to me. Coach House is a good brand. I need to cover them more. First glance tells me that are doing some fine things, at least on the surface: power mcd shades, stainless steel sink in the bathroom of the Arriva, nice outdoor shower with good design details. Here's my concern with them: they have practically no class b market share - Winnebago controls 35%+ of the market Erwin Hymer/Roadtrek 30% and Thor (Airstream) and Pleasure way 30%. The remaining 5%-10% everyone else is fighting over. That's not a lot of marketshare. I would be concerned that they will just give up and get out of the market leaving owners holding the bag. Maybe not but that's my concern. If they cannot gain meaningful marketshare then they will have to go the way of Leisure Travel vans, Great West Vans and others and exit the class b market. The Top 4 manufacturers I just mentioned are eating up any new market growth leaving little for the remaining companies like Coach House to grab. My 2 cents.
@kimonogatos7 жыл бұрын
Maybe I’m overly fixated on Coach House Arriva’s dry bath... and shower that a large person could use... so maybe I’m defending the company unnecessarily. Wasn’t it once well known for van conversions (pre Sprinter) before moving into Class C?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
i believe in the late 90's and early 2000's they made a class b on the promaster chassis. The 192 series?

Thank you for helping us sort out the class B buying thought process. I see there have been questions about the demise of Hymer-Roadtrek and the impact on the choices in the Performance quadrant. Since nature abhors a vacuum, which models from Winnebago or Pleasure-Way could or should fill the Performance quadrant in Roadtrek's absence? Or would you suggest another company to help fill out the Performance category? We appreciate your guidance and advice.

Would you consider Leisure Travel Vans to be a premium seller with their unique floor plans? They seem to be in the top-three: PW, Advanced RV and LTV. How would you class the aesthetically sensitive and fussy Class B RV buyer? For example, I would not purchase a status brand, for example a Mercedes just for the WOW factor of having a Mercedes. Most DIY Class B Vandwellers are price sensitive and it shows in lowered aesthetics - not all of them though.

Neil, I'm going to suggest expanding the scope of your coverage to include more custom van refit companies. With the recent scandal at Erwin Hymer Group NA, I've taken a step back from considering that product. Don't get me wrong, I still love the design. I just don't trust the product. I've recently been looking more into a custom refit. Sportsmobile looks interesting and they've been around forever so, I have more confidence they're not on the verge of financial collapse. With all the reputable custom refit companies, It would be interesting to take a behind the scenes look at one's operations every now and again.

Hymer is basically Roadtrek so in my book they are all about performance and maintaining their product leadership position. ARV is a custom build shop so I don't really consider them. This exercise is mostly about manufacturers and their products. ARV is not a manufacturer in the sense that they don't have product lines. You can custom build anything at any price. Make sense?

I echo Carla’s comment...hubby and I narrowed down our choices to AI and pleasureway on Mercedes chasis because of our focus on quality and performance. Great video to see the thought process put into visual format. AI won out due the the # of passengers options (up to 9 seats) so the Rv can hv multi function of transporter in 1 car on day trips w extended family. Since we r frugal (but willing to pay for quality) in 2017, we ended up purchasing a used 2014 AI EXT (w less than 20k miles) from a dealer whose owner traded in his AI for brand new pleasure way...we got our AI wo having steep depreciation of the initial years and w added dealer warranty (you can negotiate the px of warranty offered) we hv similar coverage of buying a new AI

I'm not particularly into the quadrant methodology--reminds me too much of the English text in "The Dead Poet's Society" that used it to analyze poetry. :) However, I agree generally with many of your comments. When I reflect back on all of the repairs I made on my old rig that were necessitated by the manufacturer's corner-cutting, although it was considered a mid-level rig with pretty good quality for the time, I think that had a lot to do with limiting my recent decision-making to RoadTrek and PleasureWay, after looking at the quality of other Bs. I still have very little experience with our new PleasureWay Ascent, just 600+ miles and only one night "driveway camping"--too much winter still. But that's given me plenty of time to personalize and inspect since taking delivery at the end of October--both activities tend to turn up manufacturing shortcuts and errors, if they exist. So far, I've found 2 missing screws, and a place in the bathroom that I thought should have a little more sealant. I've changed a few things and added a few things, and I've delved into the hidden areas, more out of curiosity than anything. Overall, the quality of construction is really excellent. There are a few things that I would suggest PW do differently, which are relatively minor. I think the lowered entry step to the slider is unnecessary--if it were level with the step for the passenger door, that would work just as well and be less vulnerable to curb damage. The storage tube for the dump hose is too short--it will just barely take a 10' hose and fittings, except for the cheapest (flimiest) of hoses--and yet there's plenty of room under the skirting on the drivers side for a longer storage tube. Incidentally, ours came with a hose that couldn't have been longer than about 6' and was really flimsy--that's been replaced after only one use. If there's any one thing that I think PW should address, though, it's the clunky navigation system of the Mercedes Sprinter--surely MB must have a better one that could be ordered by PW. I have no beef with the radio itself, although it's pretty basic in today's world. It should have built-in Sirius XM, but I solved that with a portable version, which I also use in my airplane, that plugs into MB's audio input port. The sound is certainly adequate except perhaps for audiophiles. I might wish for speakers in the back of the coach sometime, but so far not yet. But the navigation system is really poor! Not so much what it provides (its screen size is adequate, the voice prompts are fine, and it's accurate) but what it doesn't provide, and that's ease of programming. I can see why I have read that many owners ignore the MB system and install a Garmin. For a modern rig designed for traveling, it's a shame that it doesn't come with a better navigation system. Keep the videos coming--I'm enjoying them.

Cary, what a great comment. Thank you for sharing with other viewers. Very interested to read of the shake down issues that you've encountered. I'll be doing a video in February for my 1 year update since purchasing my Ascent. I love all the recommendations that you have. If you're okay with it, I'd like to share them with PleasureWay. I agree with you on the navigation system. Hopefully that will be updated on the new 2019 chassis (did you see my video on it? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKXRZHRrg8-hY6c). One thing I do like about the built-in MB navigation system and one reason why I stick with it is the fact that it integrates into the rest of the dash computer system. I get turn by turn navigation in the little lcd screen next to the speedo. I find this very useful. And, the telephone, radio and other functions are all also integrated into that little screen. But I did tend to agree that the system in general needs to be updated by MB. Great comment. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Kevin. I like LTV a lot. Like Pleasure-way they are one of the last few remaining independent motorhome manufacturers. They got out of the pure b-class, van market a few years back to my disappointment. I felt their vans were not only some of the highest quality but also some of the most innovative. In some regards there were more innovative and more of a product leader than Roadtrek. Having said that, they still make b-plus vans and they are still top notch and high quality and consistently demonstrate innovation for this segment of RVs.

Yeah it is such a great layout and then you have the large bathroom in the back which is unusual for a camper van. Plus, for under $80k you get so many standard and optional features included like the cargo mounts on the roof, the bike rack, the truma combi, corian counters, ladder. The list goes on. The 59K is my pick for the low cost, entry class b van. The only thing I wish they'd address is the height of the bench seats is a bit high. I wish they would lower them just a tad to make it more comfortable to sit on those bench seats.

@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Advanced Rv builts fantastic units, no doubt. I didn't include them for a number of reasons. First, they are a custom build shop and I didn't feel custom builders should be included. Second, the RV manufacturers I listed control nearly 100% of the market. Winnebago, Roadtrek, Airstream and Pleasureway dealers can be found nearly anywhere. One of those brands will most likely be one that class b buyers will end up purchasing.
@tracy30667 жыл бұрын
The Advanced RVs are great rigs but I would never spend the money the charge for their custom vans. I went to my max with my Roadtrek! I just don’t see the need to shell out 300k when something at 100k will do! (Actually I was hoping to buy a used Roadtrek but none of the used Roadtreks I found had the power I needed it it)

Based on his money-is-no-object quadrant it seems that custom builders are right there at the bottom (or top). But I understand his exclusion criteria. However Advanced RV specializes in Class B builds and they are truly setting the bar for what is state of the art in this arena.

What is your advice on used class B?
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
G G I think going used is a good idea. You can get a lot of RV for a lot less than purchasing new. Make sure the miles are low. See if it is still under warranty and see if you can take it into a shop to have them inspect it. I sold my like new 2014 Roadtrek CS Adventurous and the new owners got quite a deal! Only 7,500 miles on it with an extended 7 year warranty.

Very interesting. Into which quadrant would you fit Advanced RV from Ohio?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Daniel. Well Advanced RV is a custom build shop so technically they can fit into any one of those quadrants, depending on what you're having them build. This exercise is mainly about the manufacturers that build and sell finished products that are sold in showrooms. Does this make sense?
@danielforgues33507 жыл бұрын
They offer innovative technologies like a 50 volt electrical system that charges twice as fast as a conventional 12 volt system, a tiny water heater located under the chassis that is used to heat water for in-coach use, transfer heat to the fresh water tank and glycol for the floor radiant heating system. And it goes on and on, and on... Yes they are custom builders and each RV coming out of their factory is ultimately unique. There must be a core common concept upon which they add optional packages. Something not that much different from the concept of optional performance packages you applied to Roadtreck? I have yet to look at the ins and outs of one unit but, from the videos I watched, they sure look made by well trained craftsmen and with prime quality materials. So, going forward with the manufacturer qualification system you presented us, I would sit them on the line separating Performance and Premium. Thank you Neil for throwing at us some very interesting ideas and concepts. Please keep them coming.

Wow, Daniel I like your analysis and explanation! Thank you so much for sharing with other viewers. I think Advanced RV will also help to push the broader industry into higher quality standards and innovation. I agree that they straddle the line between Performance and Premium. Thanks again for sharing!

Ultramobility - back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I grew up in NZ. Good call you! My spouse & I have a 2018 24Q Coachmen Galleria with freedom package (induction stove, 3 solar panels, lithium battteries etc.) build underway. We thought we wanted a roadtrek until we saw & drove some. Roadtrek options were great but quality a disappointment. Have subscribed to ur channel & look forward to following u. Cheers mate!

Kiwiwizard, so excited for you and your new rig! When you get it why don't you record some things and I'd love to share it with the community here (if you're open to that). I hear great things about the Galleria and I plan on doing a review of it shortly. Build quality looks good. Many thanks for subscribing and your support! Cheers, Neil

Do you think LTV’s at 24’ are a little to big to get around in? Parking, city driving, etc. It seems like PW wide body at 22’ may be the best of both worlds with 3 piece dry baths, but MB diesel seem costly to drive & maintain. I’m semi-retired-how do you have time to think so much about Class B’s?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kevin. 24 ft. may be too long. Depends on what you plan to do in it. It's not too big if you're using it to camp and travel around in - in fact it's a great length. If you're hoping to use a 24ft. rig for daily use or you're hoping to park in normal parking spaces then it is less ideal. It will take up two spots in a parking lot and you'll need more than the standard 20 foot parking space on a typical street. 22 ft. is definitely more manageable - losing that 2 extra feet goes a long way. I love RVs and class B's in particular. I just find the time to research all this stuff. I find it exhilarating.

Kevin Letostak What about a Chevy Roadtrek 210 Popular? It’s a wide body but it’s only 21 1/2 feet. I can squeeze it into one parking space. It’s got tons of room inside and on the outside!

Where do you place Liesure Travel Vans?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dave. Great question. Very high up. Unfortunately, they don't make class B vans any more, just B-plus vans but I'd put their quality up there with Pleasure-way and above Airstream. They make great products.
@ChristianTravelers7 жыл бұрын
Leisure Travel Vans are Class C's that are sometimes referred to Class B+'s which really isn't a class but is a term used effectively to represent a middle ground between the Class B and the cab-over designs of the traditional Class C. Interestingly, at the top of Pleasure-Way's and now Airstream's RV lineup, you will find the wide-bodies similar to Leisure Travel. They are technically all Class C (B+ if you will) because they are built on a cutaway chassis as opposed to the Class B being built within the confines of a vehicle manufacturer's "van".

I'm in Ontario and wouldn't mind checking out a ascent, what dealer did you buy from seems scarce here.

Hi, Casaaprile. I purchased mine from VR St-Cyr in Quebec - just outside of Montreal. Great dealer if you can make it there. There's also 1000 island RV center near Kingston. Riv-Sud near Quebec City is also a good option. Let me know if you need any other help.

I was focused on Carado Axion made by Hymer because of length (17' 9"). And it is gas and 6 cylinder. Made 2017, 18 and 19. I do not want anything that is not those three things (length, cylinder and gas). Now Hymer was bought by Thor and offers what the Carado was with improvements. Thor Rize 18 M. Or scope. No studio pop up. They are new 2021...start at 75,000. My yearly oncome is 24,000 as a retired person. I would use it as my only vehicle and have a modest apt. Trying to figure out how to fo this. I bought a Winnebago lesharo class b ultra. Could not manage it...like driving a boat...big mistake. Spent 2300. Ended up donating it. So I know what I cannot do and I know exactly what I need and want. Its just currently out of my range. Thanks for listening!

I've noticed very few ford transit based options on the premium or performance-based market which I don't understand why. They can compete very well in all catagories with MB. Any thoughts?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Antone. I think is purely a branding issue. people associate that silver star with luxury and will pay a premium for it even though the transit looks nearly identical. the sprinter is known for having pretty good durability with its diesel engines. i'm not sure what the transit record is or how is compares with mb in this regard. The Leisure Travel Vans Wonder is built on the Ford Transit chassis and is considered a luxury RV. leisurevans.com/wonder/

I wonder how many couples thinking to buy a van are split between the quadrants? I think my husband and I are both performance oriented, but in different ways. He suggested to me that Mercedes is well known for its mileage life and that the Mercedes sprinters have many of the safety features we’re used to on our Mini. I’m taking what he says on faith. I’m focused on where to put the trash and wash my stew pot. Thank you, Ultramobility, for another great video!
@andys6237 жыл бұрын
It is unfortunate that here in the US most are unaware of the history and quality of the Transit comparatively. While MB is noted for engines and their luxury cars, they lag behind in many other markets. Transit sales even in the US are much larger than Sprinter beginning the first year offered here. Much easier to find a Ford dealer than a MB, not that you will need to as soon.
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
I think they've only relatively recently launched their Transit van here for commercial use in North America right? 2013?
@Ultramobility7 жыл бұрын
Kimonogatos, you're welcome! Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like together you have the bases covered! What kind of van are you looking at?
@dlg54852 жыл бұрын
Great overview, Niel, but I definitely do not fit into just one of your quadrants. I am definitely more quality/feature focused than cost focused, but I'm not willing to overpay for what the product offers, so I am right on that line between performance and premium. Value matters to most of us, even those of us who are willing to pay a higher price because we expect MUCH more for that price. I'm planning to purchase a class B when I retire and I've been following the industry for many years and, frankly, have not been impressed with the quality and features offered by ANY brand. I've also looked at the best custom builders (Humble Road, Advanced RV), but they are far more expensive than I can afford. It is very disappointing that mainstream builders haven't improved their overall quality very much, in my opinion.
@Ultramobility2 жыл бұрын
yes i agree. commercial manufacturers need to up their quality game. i will continue to beat the drum for this. careful of that 80/20 custom builders use. it’s not meant for vehicles given the many screws and bolts involved that loosen from road travel.
@dlg54852 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility Humble Road effectively addresses that 80/20 concern on his channel. George is very thorough, with a heavy focus on testing and design, to improve long term durability and serviceability. I consider him to be among the very best custom van builders out there. HR and ARV are innovating far more than any of the mainstream brands.
@Ultramobility2 жыл бұрын
what’s his solution? here’s a custom builder talking about why he doesn’t recommend 80/20 kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGqwd3uJg6trr9k
@dlg54852 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility You'll have to refer to his videos for the answer to that question. Also, I'm not sure why would you be any more concerned about 80/20 fasteners loosening over time than any fastener in any moving vehicle, which should be inspected regularly, in any case. Seems like a silly thing to get hung up on.

Pleasure Way makes nice vehicles..but their US outlets are minimal. THAT is their major weakness..and the reason I went to Roadtrek.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
its true that the pleasureway network isn't as expansive as roadtreks. having said that we need to see how roadtrek's and hymers dealer network develops as they are not treating their dealer network well but opening up competing hymer dealerships too close to roadtrek dealers.
