QUANSHENG UV-K5 Another great SSB firmware, AM fixed + simple installation

HOW TO UPGRADE FIRMWARE:
1. insert USB data cable to your PC and wait until COM port will be installed automatically
2. push and hold PTT button and turn ON your radio. LED LAMP will be shining.
3. now connect the data cable to your radio
4. open the "firmware installation link" in CHROME explorer and press "Flash firmware"
5. select your active/installed USB Serial COM port and press "connect"
6. flashing process takes a few second and automacally finish. Your radio will reboot automatically.
7. ENJOY THE NEW FIRMWARE! :)

In the newer version of Fagci mode you can enter a frequency by pressing 5 (* is .) and confirm it by M. And the modulation changing by pressing 0.

They are all the same internals. Basically just a different exterior. Same goes for all variants of Quasheng K5, K6 etc

@@la7dfa Yes, they are all the same... unfortunately. Wishlist items: - rotary encoder instead of the white LED - larger flash space (e.g. 256K) - RGB LED backlight for settable color. That is probably what the K6 should have been (in Baofeng models, UV-K5 is with LED and UV-K6 with rotary encoder)

Just installed this F/W. It's good but the TX freq range is set to original 50-600 MHz with airband disabled (118-136). I found when listening on airband AM is good, but when powered up on airband the audio is distorted with strong signals.. Selecting the AGC level or cycling the mode select fixes it. Cycle power and it's distorted again. Seems an AGC bug on power up.

With the hacked firmware these are quite amazing radios, mine both have transmit unlocked but of course they should not be operated far from the 2m/70cm bands , the output spectrum is scarily bad. I have not had the time to fully explore the possibilities but they are a great basis for experimentation. Unfortunately some people will doubtless try use the wide transmit range that can be enabled via the keyboard. A great value for money radio, mine both have the latest Egzumer firmware..

@@edkemp6287 Well, I looked it up again as I remembered the band was extended in the UK some time ago. Turns out that the extension is only up to 147 MHz, and that it has to be applied for individually. Also this ends in October 2024, I don't know if it will be extended by then. So the 144-148 should have been 144-147 in the firmware, and probably not even that as I understand that the band plan for 146-147 reserves it for wide band applications like data and TV.

I managed to seize up my radio, it stopped changing channels like going on a go slow. Resetting the VFO made no difference so selecting ALL just made the digits big.

can you add the sms function to this firmware? I tried two radios today, the k5(8) and uv5r plus, both had poor rx audio quality, and the other party complained that both had poor Tx audio, completely full of static. I cracked a baofeng uv5r out and it was flawless........ I really hope to find a firmware to allow better audio quality, but the FSK modem sending SMS is an abolsutely unexpected treat......... I wonder if anyone will hack it so you can send data via the serial port from a pc etc?

Interesting, so all SSB on this is DSB? Was wondering how it (DSB) would work for RX of SSB on VHF UHF for use as a downlink SSB RX for as part of a portable satellite station with FT-817/818? IF it would RX clear enough it would be a great low cost addition to a station for satellites. Merry Christmas!

I am using this firmware and think it is great. However, I cannot seem to go from VFO back to Memory mode even though I press function then the "3" button. I can go the opposite from memory to VFO, but not the other way. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thanks.

No need to press the function button, just use the 3 button to toggle between VFO and MR mode. Hope this helps!

You need that baofeng 2 pin cable. USB C will not do that. USB are just for emergency charging.

There is a single VFO mode too. Nice way to simplify the screen. 👍 HOW TO: Check the latest firmware v2.5R2. You need to access the service menu mode (Power ON with PTT + S1), access the menu, and assign the function "VFO SWAP" to a side key... This feature in VFO mode, change from double to single. Also, Single VFO method (new) Put into Single VFO mode: F +2 A/B Enter the desired frequency (7 digits). The VFOs are called VAx or VBx to make it clear which one is active.

Depends with what you expect. It does really not work for transmit, since it is a 2m, 70cm radio with a LOT of disturbance on the VHF bands. Receive on "SSB" is USB + LSB at the same time, aka DSB. But with a proper antenna you will definately hear stations.

It can but internal filters mean only microwatts get out, and watts of harmonics including in airband. There are people working on adding filter modes to use hf tx

I totally agree, I have a DJ-F1, IC-24ET, FT-911, TH-27 in my old collection of handheld radios that are 30+ years old. With minimal repairs they are still functional, but I also have a Baofneg UV-B5 that has been working for 10 years. The Chinese are taking over a significant part of the market with radio devices, using the new SDR chips the war will be merciless for the buyers of radio stations. I hope that we will profit from it with cheaper equipment..@@edkemp6287

Hi. I tried the procedure (even several times), but something went wrong and now my Quansheng is blocked and no longer turns on. The updater message said: Version check passed Flashing firmware Flashing... 2.1% Flash command rejected. Aborting. I also tried to restore the original firmware from the official website, but nothing. Is there any file to try to restore or should I resign myself to using my Quyansheng as a door stop? 🥲
