The reason why Air cost $70-$90 million to make was because one of the aims of Matt Damon & Ben Affleck’s new production company (Artists Equity) is to pay a lot of the below-the-line crew more than they normally would & to equally share the profits of the film’s success (theatrically, streaming or otherwise) with everyone involved with the project in question. There are people who have been waiting for a faithful Super Mario Bros. movie since the late 80's. And since that time the kids who grew up with the games now play the games with their kids. The studio did a great job of marketing the movie equally to the nostalgia of the parents and modern kids. There probably won't be another franchise with that kind of universal appeal and all those years of anticipation any time soon. Like, sure you can make a FortNite, Among Us, or Five Nights at Freddy's movie but it won't have the same nostalgic power punch to all generations.

The thing with Dungeons and Dragons' budget is that the bits you really remember were pretty cheap effects. Lots of fun creature costumes going on and the halfling interactions were parent trap/thunderbirds level so I think they could get away with dropping down to maybe 70m for their budget and still keep it looking good enough. You'll have to have less dragons and collapsing underdark but that's not necessarily a problem if they get the rest of it right (that and they've presumably got a lot of assets developed now so they can stretch those)

Spring Break is happening this week for many, which will help Mario as well.
