@@Sean-YEGThe average movie goer is completely oblivious to the OGL (and I'd say a sizable chunk of D&D players are oblivious to the OGL) and D&D's player base isn't anywhere close to Nintendo's, which when you've got a Mario film catering to kids, HAT just ran into a Nintendo brick wall for its release window.

I'm sad to hear about the DnD movie not doing well after its first weekend. It was so clear that the people involved really loved the project and could make a movie that was enjoyable for everyone, not just people who play the game. I hope it doesn't discourage Hollywood from making more movies like it. Thanks for all your hard work Dan.

The reason why Air cost $70-$90 million to make was because one of the aims of Matt Damon & Ben Affleck’s new production company (Artists Equity) is to pay a lot of the below-the-line crew more than they normally would & to equally share the profits of the film’s success (theatrically, streaming or otherwise) with everyone involved with the project in question. Other then that no notes! I kinda love that you split the show up into two parts coz Charts With Dan for me is required viewing each & every week :))

John Wick 4, on an R-Rating, not being sold to all audiences and in just a couple of weeks has manages to get that much closer to the profiting gross overall of "Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania", a movie that works to be accessible to EVERY audience out there, from the material to the PG-13 rating. I know I am stupid to feel this way but, well done John Wick. Proving once again being accessible and safe is not always the strategy for the biggest successes.

Brilliant and Heartfelt tributes this week, Dan! One note to add regarding your piece about Leo D Sullivan. The image in the bottom left of the collage is of a young Floyd Norman, who was a co-founder with Sullivan of Vignette Films (later renamed Vignette Multimedia). Mr. Norman is thankfully still with us and speaks regularly about his career in animation, particularly at Disney. That's my mistake (and a big one)! It came up as I searched for images of Mr. Sullivan and I included it in error - because it was an older picture, I obviously made a mistake. I had the same problem with Bill Butler - his younger pictures looked nothing like him as an older man and I had to find a description of the picture of him with Spielberg to make sure it was him. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find as much information for the picture you referenced. Noted for next time!

There are people who have been waiting for a faithful Super Mario Bros. movie since the late 80's. And since that time the kids who grew up with the games now play the games with their kids. The studio did a great job of marketing the movie equally to the nostalgia of the parents and modern kids. There probably won't be another franchise with that kind of universal appeal and all those years of anticipation any time soon. Like, sure you can make a FortNite, Among Us, or Five Nights at Freddy's movie but it won't have the same nostalgic power punch to all generations.

I think its worth remembering that there was a time that the common wisdom in Hollywood was that comic book characters weren't big money makers, and then attitudes changed. I kind of feel like Hollywood's obsession with using existing IP makes a boom of video game movies inevitable, if for no other reason than because there are a lot of well known characters and stories that have either never been adapted or at least have never been adapted well.

As a huge fan of Honor Among Thieves and someone who really wants to see more movies in that series, I was heartbroken to realize it was going against Mario in the next weekend. I don’t know why anyone is surprised by Mario absolutely dominating. Keep in mind that not only is it a movie based on probably the most popular and mainstream video game series of all time, but it is also a very short movie (only 90 minutes) meaning they can show it many more times throughout the day while longer movies like JW4 and D&D are limited. I would've gone watch this movie with my friends, my wife and would've recommended it to a ton of people, but you know... I don't want Hasbro to make money out of the IP... I'll probably wait for it to come up in one of the myriad of streaming services i already pay for. The thing with Dungeons and Dragons' budget is that the bits you really remember were pretty cheap effects. Lots of fun creature costumes going on and the halfling interactions were parent trap/thunderbirds level so I think they could get away with dropping down to maybe 70m for their budget and still keep it looking good enough. You'll have to have less dragons and collapsing underdark but that's not necessarily a problem if they get the rest of it right (that and they've presumably got a lot of assets developed now so they can stretch those)

Spring Break is happening this week for many, which will help Mario as well. I am much more bearish on it after hearing so-so reviews from KZbinrs, but I'm hoping the action and charm are enough to be happy with it. As a measure of taste, DC Super-pets was barely ok to me, and Minions: The Rise of Gru was pretty enjoyable, so I'm hoping it's noticeably better than both of those. Thanks for the video Dan--we always have to remember inflation! :) And lastly, thanks for spotlighting the lesser-known filmmakers, who are always overlooked to heap more praise on directors.

I really hope that Dungeons and Dragons has better legs than this weekend would suggest. Obviously everyone was going to Mario, but hopefully after the excitement for that dies down, there will still be a lot of people who want to go see D&D. The good news for that film is that there isn't another PG-13 mass appealing movie coming out until Guardians 3 on May 5. Hopefully word of mouth spreads for D&D and more and more people go to see it while there isn't a lot else to see in that style of film.

Found an article today that claimed that Turning Red was the biggest Box Office failure in history. Which is pretty impressive considering that it didn't have a Theatrical release 😂

I think the thing that killed DnD was the release date (in other words, the competition both before and after). It was in the middle of one of the highest grossing R rated films (Scream 6) and one of the highest grossing family films (Mario), thus getting neither audience. Maybe a more established and beloved IP could stand a chance against them, but not DnD.

assuming the Super Mario movie performs well here in its native Japan, it should get a big bump in its international box office when the film opens in Japan on April 28th.

Appreciate the separation of theatrical and streaming. I’m sure you’ll still note the context of films not doing as well if they open simultaneously, so I’m not missing anything.

The dnd movie got me going to a theater twice. It has been literal years since I did that. Some people in my dnd group haven't seen it and there's talk of going together (which would also be a 2nd viewing for some of them). I could see it having some nice legs

SO SO HAPPY seeing Joyland here. I would urge everyone to see it, it is a gorgeous film with beauty and sadness hidden in every corner. Such a fantastic Pakistani film. I would die for Dan to review it and get more people to see it

Can't wait for streaming charts. One suggestion for this show: can you put the flashback and tributes somewhere in the middle of the show? Something just doesn't feel right with it in the middle of the show.

I'm working on the structure of the show - everyone has different suggestions, so I just have to kinda follow my gut. I may also move the tribute section to my weekly news wrap-up show if that becomes a regular thing.

I'm actually a little surprised about the "merchandising" for the Mario movie. I was expecting Nintendo to embrace the opportunity in terms of, you know, video games. I was near certain they would either announce a surprise new game, or a bunch of deals on existing games, maybe bring back that Mario battle royale title from the 35th anniversary. As far as I can tell they haven't done anything like that.

None of this is Nintendo's style. Minimal discounts, rarely surprise games. At best, maybe something in the Mario Kart DLC could have happened.

@@SIXminWHISTLE Yeah but on the other hand this is mostly unprecedented territory for Nintendo. Their last movie was 30 years ago. And the one before the entire third act was a commercial for their brand new game (Super Mario 3). It would have been nothing for them to do another New Super Mario Bros, or another compilation on the eshop, or some better discounts then the same $10 off 8 year old games they're always offering.

Anyone else curious about a chart with a top 5 or top 10 overall per theater average?? Kind of curious to see which movies did the best for the theaters is was released in and get occasional updates if a movie breaks into it.

Is there any way you can move up the top 10 lists for the year? It always takes forever to get to that.
