The first time seeing this video we were in the TV room at the ambulance service I was working at. One of the guys commented how pretty the girl in the kitchen was. The rest of us fell on the floor laughing. Had to break it to him that it was the drummer, Roger Taylor. LOL

The dancers in the middle section of the video are members of the Royal Ballet. Freddie wanted to dance with them, so they made it happen. Also, Roger Taylor was stunning in drag.

John Deacon wrote the song from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement. The video was meant as a parody of the ITV soap Coronation Street. Freddie is the housewife, John is the grandmother, Roger is the schoolgirl, and Brian is another housewife. The idea of the video come from Roger's girlfriend.

John wrote the song, Roger's partner came up with the idea of the boys being in drag (dressing as characters from long running soap 'Coronation Street '. Freddie had offered to shave his mustache, but was told it would be funnier if it stayed. Oh, and the 'on fire' alarm clock was a device called a 'Teasmade', which was supposed to wake the user up with a cup/mug of tea in the morning.

From what I've seen referenced, this video was the idea of John Deacon, the bass guitar player. It was based on classic British comedies and theatrical traditions. As an example, during the time that William Shakespeare was writing plays, ALL roles were played by men.

Freddie definitely did a costume change for this number when they performed at Wembley stadium back in the '90s - he came onstage in drag, with the hoover (vacuum cleaner) just like in this video - I can't remember if there was a set change as well, or they may just have shown shots from the promo video on the huge screen behind them, I can't remember

Freddie was well out by then. It was a tongue-in-cheek homage to 'Coronation Street' - a popular soap opera. John Deacon wrote it as a women's liberation anthem of sorts. The idea for wearing drag was the idea of either Roger Taylor or his girlfriend, depending what you read. Wearing drag in England is a time-honored practice, especially for comic effect - Benny Hill, Monty Python, among many others - so they thought it'd be fun. The drag got the video banned by MTV, and hurt the bands' popularity in the states. Huge hit in England.

If I remember rightly because of the Drag sequences in the video clip, the US representatives did not want to release this song as the single in the USA. The video clip also tanked on MTV because of the same reason. The drag sequence parody of a UK soap opera was not appreciated by American audiences.
