OK, you've come far enough in your Queen/Freddie Mercury journey to react to Live Aid-full set. It's almost 20 min. long but it will be the fastest 20 min. you've ever spent. Keep up the great work.

I was working in healthcare in San Francisco when this song came out during the AIDS crisis. We were all “Under Pressure”. Listen to the lyrics carefully and you will know what I’m talking about. 😎👍

I understood the text immediately, although English is not my native language. One lyric makes me melancholic *Splits a family in two* this line of text hurts unspeakably, because I have experienced this. Because I never belonged and was never accepted as illegitimate. Both, Freddie and David Bowie, sang about a social situation that unfortunately exists. During the AIDS pandemic, many families broke away from each other because families were ashamed that there was a person with HIV in their family. Many died alone and were disowned by their own family. Shame was greater than understanding. *You did a good job and this "Under pressure"*

The bass riff was made by John Deacon the bassist. Funny story is that when they were jammin with David Bowie, Deacon came up with it, and they all loved it. Then they all went out for pizza and when they got back, Deacon had forgotten the riff completely! Luckily the drummer Roger Taylor remembered it.

I saw a video where Bowie states that when he got to the studio, the riff was already written. However some tell that Bowie taught it to Deacon.

Now the know the greatness of Queen you really do need to know the greatness of David Bowie, begin with the version of Under Pressure that he is in, hearing two of the greatest voices of the last century together is brilliant. I also love the lyrics especially the bit that Bowie does in the end (cos loves such and old fashioned word and love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night and love dares you to change your way of caring about ourselves, this is our last dance, this is our last dance, this is ourselves, under pressure).

Would love to see your reaction to the studio version with David Bowie. Speaking of Bowie, he did a song (among many) called "Space Oddity" that was not only great, but sad at the same time. Elton John sang "Rocket Man' which you've already done, but that's really vanilla sounding compared with Bowie's "Space Oddity" - the haunting music and the story is quite moving. Saw David Bowie in concert at the old Sullivan Stadium (now Gillette Stadium) back in 1983. It was pouring but when Bowie took the stage, the rain clouds parted and the concert was unbelievable. When the show was over, the rain clouds returned and it poured again! It was a memorable night. See: patch.com/massachusetts/foxborough/remembering-time-david-bowie-came-foxborough-0

Such a great song!! Freddie's performance of this song at the 1986 Wembley is better, because he does the call and response with the audience. If you don't remember, Ice, Ice stole the bass line for this song. Queen and Bowie sued and won!! Great job!

@@danielsonnv I love this performance because Freddie hits the high note at the beginning of the song!! But, I said the Wembley was better, not for Freddie's vocals, but because he does an incredible and fun "call and response" ending in F*** You!! And the audience is with him every second! It's unlike anything else! To me, that is why it is better and maybe more popular! Thanks for your point of view!

I hope when the younger folks hear us ‘older’ folks say, “They don’t make songs as epic as they used to...sigh...” that they realize we REALLY mean it. I have no idea if the meeting still takes place, but in Montreux, for example, cooperations between Queen and David Bowie were initiated by producers to create "Under Pressure". And it also burned (in another year) down the hotel Frank Zappa stayed at. That's why there was "Smoke on the water" by Deep Purple, who had moved into a hotel on the opposite side of the lake and saw the smoke over Lake Geneva!
