Queen Victoria went into a prolonged period of mourning. She wrote in her diary, "No one ever remembered such cloudy days."
@theshillneckedlizard8364
@theshillneckedlizard8364 2 жыл бұрын
If my memory serves, she actually wrote "no one ever remembered such cloudy days" three months before she died, when her eyesight was failing due to cataracts, and her family mercifully permitted her to think that her darkened eyesight was due to "gloomy weather." But yes, she did fall into a prolonged period of mourning. Her journal entry on the day Albert died is heartbreaking "Two or three long but perfectly gentle breaths were drawn, the hand clasping mine, and then (oh! it turns me sick to write it!) ALL, ALL was over. I stood up, kissing his dear heavenly forehead, and called out in a bitter agonising cry "Oh! My Dear Darling!" and dropped to my knees in mute distracted despair, unable to utter a word or shed a tear." Poor Victoria.

prince Albert started to get failing health on mid of 1859, particularly on his stomach. He frequently avoid some food and only drank milk. Someday, his assistant Rudolph Lohlein witnessed his master collapsed while in a dressing room. Combined with his persisting lack of sleep, overworked, never asked medical help as early as possible (not found in his history), his immune would not compromise any longer.

Victoria blamed the Prince of Wales for Albert's death. Actresses then were not like our TV, movie, or stage actresses today. And the last thing Victoria and Albert needed was a scandal involving an unmarried Prince of Wales and heir to the throne to the greatest empire on Earth. Part of the reason why when one sees a picture of Edward VII (whom Victoria asked him to not use his baptismal name, Albert, when he became king), it is with a full beard.

Also, there were other reasons. Germany before the Weimar Republic was governed by Salic Laws that stipulated that royals or nobles must marry within their ranks, or their descendants would not inherit the titles, lands, etc. In doing this, their second-eldest son, Alfred, was able to become the Duke of Saxe-Coeburg & Gotha (his oldest brother, Albert - later Edward VII - would renounce his claim to the Duchy when he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark), and Victoria, the Princess Royal, would become the Crown Princess of both Prussia and Germany when she married Frederick (later Kaiser Frederick III). Had Frederick III married someone of a lower status, the Thrones of Germany and Prussia would have passed to Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia, the grandson of Prussian King Frederich Wilhelm III (his father being Prince Charles of Prussia).

1961 was the 100th anniversary of Albert’s death. 2001 the 100th anniversary of Victoria’s death. Bertie died in 1910 so the 100th anniversary was 2010. His wife Alexandra became the oldest living person that would be consort at some point after Albert died, and she was still alive today 100 years ago! She was the oldest living consort to be for 64 years! George V and May were king and consort 100 years ago, respectively, but Albert Victor has been dead since 1892 (100th anniversary: 1992). George V must’ve gotten his tough parenting style from Victoria.

I find it heartwarming that the comments are filled with support for Bertie. Albert went to see him, he didn't ask for it. He didn't write a letter saying; "Hey Dad, I just slept with this hot actress, come see me and I'll tell you all about it." Though it may sound cruel and a bit heartless to some, Albert's death was no fault but his own and poor Bertie spent the rest of his time as prince being told it was his fault.

Usually after the death of a close long term spouse the remaining spouse follows suit. As is the case of Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth. We hope it is not soon be Queen Elizabeth may soon follow Prince Phillip. But Elizabeth being Elizabeth will out live us all.

6:18 The interesting thing is until Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, Edward VII was kept out of all official business. Kaiser Wilhelm II of the German empire was Victoria’s oldest and favorite grandchild. So whenever he visited her, the queen would always ask Bertie to go outside whenever her and the Kaiser discussed state matters, or really any matter. As long as Victoria was alive the Kaiser was always welcomed in Britain, but after her death the rest of the family treated him coldly. Perhaps not helped by some of his outrageous(but hilarious) antics. It wasn’t always Willy’s fault as both him and Edward VII butted heads perhaps stemming from again the fact he might have been jealous of Victoria’s preferential treatment of her favorite grandchild. This tenuous relationship is perhaps why Britain and Germany become rivals before ww1

Vicky outstripped Bertie in intellect by far but she outstripped most people. Baron Stockmar described her as "gifted to the point of genius". Bertie was not into book learning but he was intelligent enough and had an incredible memory. The only problem he had was that he was pushed too hard by his father's well meaning but punishing educational regime.

He was always sick. He suffered from Crohn’s Disease and had very messed up intestines. Their marriage was not really what it was they both were very different people. And Albert had a lot of affairs with other aristocrats wives. Victoria was extremely exaggerated about everything including her obsession over her pretty German Prince who could hardly ever hold anything down in the manner of food. Exaggerations of their “love”....all whilst Victoria gorged for England as she suffered from eating disorders due to her weird mother starving her as a child.

Albert's body was temporarily entombed in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. A year after his death his remains were deposited at Frogmore Mausoleum, which remained incomplete until 1871. The sarcophagus, in which both he and the Queen were eventually laid, was carved from the largest block of granite that had ever been quarried in Britain. Despite Albert's request that no effigies of him should be raised, many public monuments were erected all over the country and across the British Empire. The most notable are the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial in London. The plethora of memorials erected to Albert became so great that Charles Dickens told a friend that he sought an "inaccessible cave" to escape from them.

I watched several series on the English monarchy and I noticed the English producers greatly embellished the looks of English royals like Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, yet diminished the handsomeness of the US couple President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Then, they showed JFK losing his temper (violence?) against Jacqueline for her popularity in their European travels. I never heard that JFK was envious of her public popularity...in fact, he used it to his advantage. Womanizer, yes, violent temper, no. Seems the English tarnished his image to save face of their often bizarre and homely monarchy. Sad. Why support such an expensive, unnecessary ritual ? I guess because the monarchy feeds the country with stories, tourism, trinkets, films, etc.
