What a cool and interesting song! Don`t take it for granted ;-) Catch the conversation between Freddie and John at the start and also at the end. You could not ask for anything better. This is Queen with Who Needs You, the acoustic take. Do enjoy. Thank you.
Lyrics:
I make it half past six you come at seven
Always try to keep me hanging round
You little spoilt thing girl you kept me waiting
Never contemplating my point of view
This comes as no surprise
I'm a fool for I believed your lies
But now I've seen through your disguise
Who needs well I don't need who needs you?
Oh I believed you
Went on my knees to you
How I trusted you
But you turned me down
But it's dog eat dog in this rat race
And it leaves you bleeding lying flat on your face
Reaching out, reaching out for a helping hand
Where is that helping hand? (Oh, muchachos)
Ooh, well I don't need you
How I was pushed around?
Don't let it get you down
You walked all over me
But don't you ever give in
Taking one step forward slipping two steps back
There's an empty feeling that you can't forget
Reaching out (reaching out) for a helping (for a helping hand) hand
When I met you you were always charming
Couldn't sleep at night 'til you were mine
You were oh so, so sophisticated
Never interested in what I'd say
I had to swallow my pride
So naive you took me for a ride
But now I'm the one to decide
Who needs, well I don't need, who needs you?

Freddie’s vocals proved he was in fact a chameleon. It’s interesting to realize that Freddie was tasked with putting forth vocals that the writer wanted to convey. Yet often these songs would be worked on & refined, and resulted in a true collaborative effort. As Lovely M said below, there is an interview with John where he discusses “his writing process”. The interviewer asks how he presents a song to the group. John admits, “well I can’t sing, so I always work with Freddie” as he continued it seems to realize he has only written songs for Freddie to sing. And he states quite firmly that likely would never change. Over the years all of them offered similar sentiment regarding Freddie. In the end, it appears he was their muse.

The behind the scenes patter between Deacy and Freddie is fantastic! Deacy wrote the song as he wrote many for Freddie , it’s just Freddie’s interpretation of the words is always leaves one wondering what he’s trying to say. The song is wonderful and Freddie is Freddie! Great reaction Hap!

thanks for reacting to this one. I love their interaction. This was written by John, but you see how Freddie supported him and his music, which was less rocky than that of the others. Freddie encouraged John and Roger to write songs, because initially it was mostly Freddie and Brian composing. Freddie said in an interview that John mostly wrote motown type songs and that he loved singing those songs. I've read other fan say that when Freddie died John said that he had only ever written songs for Freddie to sing.

That's what I love about Queen songs, you never know what to expect next. Freddie seemed to feel what each song needed whether it was written by him or John, Brian or Roger. The other three trusted his instincts.

It looks like John is the one playing the guitar. Brian did say in an interview that John was a very good player. This is one of my favorite Queen songs. The only way to understand Queen is to buy the albums. Then go thru them one at a time. IT WILL BE A JOURNEY.

Freddie had a way of relating a message that was very serious in a light and playful way! Making it sound so good, and yet lyrics being so serious. Like you said like in Living On My Own. There will never be another Freddie!

No, it's John's song 😃 So Freddie with John here, just the two of them in the studio, rehearsing John's song and John asking for Freddie's advice in the beginning. It's more interesting than official final take. Loved your reaction!!

Freddie might have helped with the lyrics, but the song is John's. If it sounds vaguely Caribbean, it's John's, lol. There's little information about this song, so I don't know if it was directed at someone. I agree, it's great to hear those little conversations. These lyrics were place holders. A process they often did when doing basic demo to see if the idea was worth pursuing to a full song. The new song Face it Alone is a very early take demo and the lyrics were never completed. But like this, enough of the music had already been fleshed out.

Awesome reaction, I do love all of these extra material or alternative versions they provided with the anniversary of the News Of The World album. The Spread Your Wings and It's Late versions are really somewhat better then the final studio versions. I do think this is actually very close to Freddie's real natural voice, when he was not putting effects into his voice. He had a very sweet natural voice. If you like these interesting events, and Freddie's sweet voice, you should listen to Freddie singing Bohemian Rhapsody drunk, it is quite funny, kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2HEgJmFdtSgobM.
