The whole middle section is Roger and Freddie's voices, witn no instruments 😃 Freddie imitated woodwind instruments including a clarinet and Roger imitated tubas, trumpets and a kazoo. The tap dance was "performed" by Freddie and Roger on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers.

What I love most about Queen is how diverse their music is. This type of music is music hall or vaudeville. Seaside Rendezvous definitely puts a smile on my face, very light and bouncy. "Lazing on a Sunday afternoon" and "Good Company" (sung by Brian playing a banjolele) have that same cheery, music hall-vaudeville vibe. Also, in the line "I'll be your Valentino", he's referring to Rudolf Valentino, a famous silent film actor known as "the Latin lover of the silent screen." Freddie also referred to him in "Good old-fashioned lover boy".

This song has that sort of vaudville/ragtime sound, there are a few of them in the Queen Catalog, Brian's is one called Good Company, I love that one too. Queen was so inventive with this song, no synth and mostly vocals to create the different period instruments. I love this song, it never fails to make me smile and want to shake about.

Really nice. And I'm remembering at one time Roger's best girl was French, believe they had 2 or 3 children. She and Roger were married for several years. And I see in the comments all some vocals were only Freddie and Roger. Plus they collaborated for the music, sounds etc..I can imagine them in the studio having fun pulling this together.

The versatility and skill of these four people is still amazing after all this time. The opening of this album, from the scorching vitriol of Death On Two Legs to the 20's style of Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon sums Queen up better than anything I could say!!

This might be an out of left field request but I’d love to see what you think of the recently released version of “Time Waits for No One” - it’s just Freddie and a piano. It was for a musical of the same name by Dave Clark (also a friend of Freddie’s) in the mid-80s, but the version of the song released back then had a lot of instrumentals and back up vocals added. It was beautiful, but Clark knew he had an early version Freddie had recorded with him and some video footage that hadn’t been used - the problem was that he couldn’t find it. He searched for more than 20 years before finally locating the tape and creating a new video with an acoustic version of the song just a couple of years ago. It was like getting a new Freddie song - I believe the video trended when it came out. His voice is absolutely killer in it, and the song essentially carries a message for all of us. 💙

Kudos to you for this reaction! I absolutely love this 'music hall' piece by Queen. I am always so impressed by the variety and inventiveness of this band. This would have been popular in the first couple of decades in the 1900's. I bet Freddie and Roger had a ball doing this! Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is in the same vein, also Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. Freddie's lyrics are so clever, and always tongue-in-cheek.

Good Company on this album has amazing work by Brian. He gets his guitar to sound like various horns. All the “big band” sounds are actually just his guitar. Superb.

Queen used to proudly say in the liner notes, “And no one played Synthesizer...”. This was the case up until The Game. Truly remarkable knowing it was just them and their instruments for those amazing first 7 albums. As an old Queen fan (got to see Freddie twice), I’m loving your reaction and insights. Thanks.

The liner notes on the album say - Vocal orchestration of Brass - Roger Taylor. Vocal Orchestration of Woodwind - Freddie Mercury. This is just Freddie and Roger using their voices and then thimbles on the mixing desk for the tapping. They must have had so much fun doing this song. Freddie with his crazy words like jollification. Brian has a guitar jazz band song called Good Company on this album where he plays "genuine Aloha Ukulele (Made in Japan)". There are so many pieces of genius on Night At The Opera.

Glad you enjoyed this. If you like the multi-layered production with all the instrument sounds, definitely check out Queen's song Good Company. Brian sings the lead vocal and they build up a full kind of orchestra through layering multiple takes and Queen said that in the end their tape masters became almost transparent as they did so many overdubs that the tape began to deteriorate. As you say, this is all pre-computers and pro-tools etc.

This was in the vein of Cole Porter, from the 1920s-30s, .very sophisticated & humorous, even camp. Their parent's generation would have heard it , maybe had records of it.. It's also reminiscent of the old 'Thin Man ' movies. Another in the same genre is ' My Melancholy Blues', which I love.

Elvis? No hon this is a song similar to the sounds on the radio shows in the late 1920’s-1930’s. It’s complex, creative in the way they used their instruments to sound like old-time style sounds. Freddie inundated himself with all types of music including French, Japanese, Gospel, Classical, Jazz and Blues. The band was talented enough to incorporate their rock music with all types of influences and create new artistic music.
