John the bass player wrote this song to his wife Veronica. "Well, Freddie didn't like the electric piano, so I took it home and I started to learn on the electric piano and basically that's the song that came out you know when I was learning to play piano. It was written on that instrument and it sounds best on that." Freddie was a great storyteller, he was able to adopt anybody's song and could fill them up with his own emotions, he always knew where to put the emphasis. Freddie had an unmistakable voice, had the skills to sing in every genre effortless, but he never took singing lessons. Roger the drummer is a great singer too (I'm In Love With My Car), Brian has a nice warm and smooth voice ('39), John was the exception. 😁

Every member of Queen has been inducted into both the "Rock and Roll" and "Songwriters" Halls of fame, they all wrote hit songs, they all played multiple instruments, only John Deacon didn't make any solo albums (but he did write Queen's best ever selling single "Another One Bites The Dust" as well as this one, and many others), were they all legends?, without a doubt YES. Also while Freddie was alive he never missed an opportunity to correct anyone who called him the leader of the band, or used terms like "Freddie Mercury and his band" stating that he was only one of four equal members in the band. Almost any time you think Queen music has been sampled, or otherwise used, in an advert (commercial), it probably has, their music has been used in TV, Movies, Commercials and at sporting events, for a very long time, possibly more so in the UK, only yesterday I watched a film on TV and every advert break consisted entirely of adverts featuring music either by Queen or a parody of Queen's music. Every member of Queen could hold a tune, only John Deacon never sang lead. Freddie was the main lead singer largely because he had a very wide range (about 4 octaves) and could also sing almost any style of song, including his Elvis impression for "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love". This song was written by John Deacon for his then girlfriend who he married soon after (and is still married to), and is therefore more of a love song. There is no specific style of Queen music they made songs covering just about every genre in use from 1940-1990 some of which they created (would Metallica exist if Queen had not created "Stone Cold Crazy"?).

Freddie is a unique singer. He's one of the few that can adapt his voice & tone to almost any genre of music which is really difficult. Just as an example - generally a gospel singer isn't going to be a good at singing a hard rock song & vice-versa, but Freddie makes it seem effortless. That's part of what makes him such a legend. Brian & Roger both sang lead on some songs on Queen's early albums, but Freddie would usually sing lead in concert on those (with a couple exceptions for Roger). To hear Roger on lead listen to "I'm In Love With My Car". To get a good feel of the difference between Brian & Freddie, each sang a version of "Too Much Love Will Kill You". Brian wrote it & Queen recorded it with Freddie on lead but there were copyright issues so they didn't release it. Brian then recorded his own version for his solo album. Queen eventually released Freddie's version after his death.

Every band member wrote songs, all had hits, all sung background (John less so, but made it up int he number of instruments he played). Perfectionists in the studio; flexible with thier music live, entertaining fans the big goal. Freddie's theatrical contribution switched them up a bit from other bands. Remember, he sought out Brian & Roger when they were in the group Smile, so that tells you he saw a match from the start.

he went to college with Tim and met them that way and watched their shows and critiqued them! and encouraged them to carry on when Tim left no disrespect to Tim but the three of them work better together as Tim said he could never be the front man Freddie was suggesting he should be. then John completed the band!
@bluebell3720

Brian and Roger were in Smile together, Freddie had known both of them for a couple of years through Tim Staffel the lead singer of Smile as they went to college together. Freddie ran a stall with Roger and moved in with him. Freddie then met Mary. Tim left Smile and they were going to call it a day, according to Roger Freddie encouraged them to start again with him. the three of them suggested names for the band and they agreed to Freddies suggestion of Queen when they ran the stall people nick named them the old Queens which was slang for flamboyant gay man. Roger was straight but 'pretty' so got the nick name as well. band members of Freddies group Ibex said they also nick named Freddie a Queen but not to his face! he had a gf but was camp, well he was as camp as he was very much commanding. he re named Ibex wreckage, his band mate rang him and said jokingly well what have you named them, he said Queen. his response was you'll never get away with that but he did! I doubt very much Brian knew the slang meaning of the word I doubt he would have agreed to it, he was with Mary then and they didn't know he also liked men. Freddie said it was royal, pompus..grand.. but when asked in an interview did he also know the gay connotations he said yes but that was only part of it. I think the royal part also fitted Freddie and he designed their logo/crest? on the royal arms. but he probably also liked the idea of turning a slur into something positive. I don't think fans thought too much about the name at the time. then Brian added God save the Queen to be played at the end of concerts which supported the idea of it being ' royal'

Freddie came up with the name Queen. He said he liked it because it was outrageous and regal. It made people take notice, 4 men in a band called Queen. This song was written by John Deacon (bass/guitar/piano/drums) about his lovely wife Veronica. 6 children and 40+ years later, they are still married. This is such a light and friendly song, I really have always loved it. Thank you for your reaction. Yes, all members are in the songwriter's hall of fame and in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Each one of the band members has had at least 3 number one songs and is considered at the top of their field on their instrument. They each have college degrees as well so they are more than just musicians. John(bass) has an advanced degree in electronics and built an amplifier that Brian uses that makes his guitar sound like other instruments. People are still trying to duplicate that amp today but nobody has done it yet. John got the parts for that amp out of a dumpster. Freddie (vocals/piano/frontman) has a degree in Design/Fashion and Advertising and Freddie designed the Queen logo which still appears on all things officially Queen. Roger(drums/Vocals) has a degree in biology and was in dental school when he had to quit because Queen exploded. Brian(Guitar/vocals/keyboards/harp/ Uke) has a PhD in Astrophysics and while still performing with Queen also does some work with NASA. He also built his guitar that he still uses almost exclusively, with his father from stuff they had laying around their house, while he was a teen. So yep, they are all legends. Brian, Freddie and Roger have all been lead vocalists with Queen and in their own bands. John sings back up sometimes but he didn't like to sing so he mostly didn't. If you want to hear Freddie do runs, listen to Stone Cold Crazy. It is speed metal before there was speed metal.

They came up with the name Queen because it was outrageous at the time, and yes all the group are legendary, Dr Brian May (Astrophysicist) and built his own Guitar back in the early 60's with his dad from normal items from around the home, Roger Taylor drums like the others all wrote the songs you'll know, and yes they all sing and play different instruments, John Deacon built the Amp which he and Brian would use for the different sounds, they all mix the songs on the desk, produce and everything that needs doing, extremely talented group of people

Absolutely agree, the way Freddie chooses to clip or stretch out certain syllables makes it unique and unpredictable and I think it makes you pay more attention to the words. But he does do runs like mad from time to time; it's just that he doesn't need to "show off" his voice with vocal gymnastics - it's just A+++++ and that's it. Even in songs like Thank Gd It's Christmas or Time Waits for No One - pretty simple songs comparatively - the way he pronounces words and little vocal choices make it unique and special.

Kia Ora (greeting) from Aotearoa New Zealand. Freddy Mercury said in an interview that the name "Queen" sounded regal and was a strong name. Freddy was also aware of the gay connotation but said that wasn't the whole reason for the name. At first the other band members weren't so sure about it but came around. Queen as a whole, will always be a Legendary group. They are incredible and Freddy knew how to command an audience with his mere presence and moves on stage,. Not forgetting also, his great piano playing. I love watching your reactions Maj. Keep up the good work.

Freddie, Brian and Roger were vocalists with John to a lesser extent - he wasn't keen on his singing voice. All four were multi instrumentalists as well as highly rated song writers (each being inducted in to the songwriters Hall of fame). The name 'Queen' came from Freddie because, as he said "It sounds regal" and yes, all four are legends.

Great reaction! You should check out, Somebody To Love - Queen live at Montreal1981, you have not viewed a live Queen performance yet, to see Freddie doing runs. Yes, Freddie does have a very unique style, he uses constants differently then most, he also had a faster and more erratic vibrato. Freddie could sing any style of music, from the very old time Vaudeville to metal and even more towards opera. It might be his influences he grew up with many different styles of music mostly in India. All of Queen are legends in their field. Drummer Roger Taylor is also a very good singer, he has that classical hard rock voice, he is known as one of the best singing drummers, it is very difficult to sing and play drums at the same time. Guitarist Brain May is known as one of the best guitarist of all time, he had a softer voice more suited to folk music. Both Brian and Roger sang lead vocals on some Queen songs. John Deacon is known as one of the best bass players, he created some of the most well known bass lines of all time, he did not sing, but he was also a very good rhythm guitarist.

I enjoyed your observations! I have always been intrigued by Freddie's phrasing. He makes such interesting choices that would have never occurred to me. Especially in their earlier work. Keeps the listener leaning into the song. They were hands-on and experimental in the studio also. They kept control of their artistic vision. The Queen story is a fascinating part of musical history.

as individuals outside of the fan base it was mainly Freddie that was known, his name in articles about the band... interviewers usually assumed all the songs were his and so on but the top ten in the 70s were Freddies and one of Johns but he was quite quiet Freddie had their first single to chart, first hit then their first No 1 so that leant to him being talked to and about more.. and he was quite different as a lead singer so that stood out ans was talked about more.. one interviewer in the 80s asked him the name of the band members he laughed and pretended to hit them saying stop that shit, but they didn't know so he said their names. other interviewers assumed he was the leader , that it was more him and a band, Freddie always said he's the lead singer not the leader, but in many ways he was but didn't see himself that way or have that attitude. there's a film about them and Freddie says 'Queen is what I say it is' that wasn't his attitude, I HATE that film after Freddies death John still stayed more in the back ground and retired when they had finished the last album and any tribute work relating to Freddie. Roger released albums during Queen and also started his own band and had albums after but didn't really get individual fame from that. his last album did quite well, but he doesn't really go after fame as such Brian puts himself out there more after Freddies death, he released two albums and toured them. he got more involved with events with guitars players.. is on a lot of social media, does a lot of interviews etc both of them have done more since I think. invited to and involved with a lot of events and concerts for AIDS awareness due to Freddie dying due to having AIDS. 92 they did a huge tribute concert for Freddie with a lot of famous singers/bands set up a musical with Queen music. then the film Bohemian Rhapsody which is so out of context and misleading it doesn't tell their story at all except they were a band, some of their songs and re enacted Live Aid, it's very unfair portrayal of Freddie. the actor who played him got an oscar. 2000 Brians rock you was cover by five live which they played on and went to no 1. it had a lot of attention in a pepsi adv then they toured with Paul Rodgers then Adam Lambert. performed at the Jubilee. previously Brian performed on the roof of the palace! so they still have a lot of coverage and exposure so are as well known now but at the time most of the focus was on Freddie not that he wanted that Brian also has a guitar company, wrote a lot of books, spent his bday week end with NASSA which let to other involvement and sending a song he wrote into space! he finished his PHD in 2007

Hey Hon, The reactions you’ve been doing for Queen & Freddie Mercury are great! BUT… (IDK how to express this enough!) …you have NO IDEA what you’re missing, by not yet reacting to any of their LIVE performances. Queen is the only band who are actually renowned for being EVEN BETTER LIVE, than in-studio. (I chuckled when you said that Freddie doesn’t do any runs in his singing… because in live shows, he’s “all over the place” with improv runs and such.) Freddie was totally unscripted onstage and EVERY live performance was different.
