Fun fact: remember the haunting horn outro of Long Slow Goodbye off of Lullabies? That's the melody & chord progression of the chorus of Running Joke! Speaking of which, this song is amazing, as short as it is. Has a somewhat folky vibe to it, and the lyricism is very evocative. My second favourite Queens song after Mosquito Song. P.S.: Running Joke is also on the vinyl version of the album, between Misfit Love and Battery Acid.

Those backing vocals in Battery Acid are actually from Troy the guitarist. Also, The Fun Machine and Running Joke were originally supposed to be on Lullabies but they lost the original tapes for TFM but found it only after the album dropped lol, and Era Vulgaris the song, Josh didn't think it fit too well on the album unfortunately. Also, the synth melody at the end of Make it Wit Chu is just the chorus melody/chords of Era Vulgaris. Now I'm waiting patiently to see your reaction to Feet Don't Fail Me, especially that drop (I'd also love to see you react to Them Crooked Vultures, which is a group consisting of Josh, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, or Humbug by Arctic Monkeys, which was produced by Homme) 😁

In regards to why the B-sides didn’t make it in, according to Wikipedia and videos on KZbin: The Fun Machine took a shit and died was originally meant for Lullabies, but they ‘lost’ the tapes for it and didn’t didn’t want to re-record it at the time. When Era Vulgaris came out, they decided to record it again, and release it as a bonus in certain countries. Running Joke was recorded after the album had been completed and settled on. It’s the first song to feature Michael Shuman on bass and Dean Fertita on keyboards/guitar, as they were brought in by Josh Homme in order to sure up the lineup that had been in flux for many years, and they performed together on the subsequent tour of Era Vulgaris. They are still with the band today (2022) almost 15 years later. The title track wasn’t included because Trent Reznor (yes, he was on this song and helped in production of it) was feuding with the record label at the time. If I am wrong to assume these sources are correct, don’t hesitate to call me out. Just though I would try to clarify the B-side omissions

@TeddymanYT2 жыл бұрын
"The song was originally intended to be on the band's fourth studio album, Lullabies to Paralyze. The tapes were assumed stolen but were, in fact, misplaced. In an interview with Rolling Stone, singer Josh Homme said "The tapes got lost. Actually, they were just at another studio, but we falsely accused everyone in the world of theft."[1] A rough studio version of the song was placed on a series of 7" vinyl records, handed out to those who had tickets to the cancelled London shows."

The story I read about why The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died didn't make the album was it was misplaced. It was recorded to tape. This was during the Era sessions but the story goes that the recording of it was lost. They were convinced someone stole it and interrogated anyone with access to the studio. Ultimately it was just lost but once the final version of Era went to be pressed etc it was found in the studio

Absolutely love this album. It is my second favorite queens album, only bested by like clockwork. Love how chaotic and heavy it sounds yet still so melodically and beautiful. I agree with the sequencing critique though. There are so many weird endings on a lot of these songs that feel kinda pointless, like the ones on Make It With Chu or Suture. These don’t take away too much though, as they are some of my favorites off the album. Suture in particular is top 3 QOTSA imo

Now that you've almost finished your deep dive into QOTSA I think you would be interested in checking out the Desert Sessions. Josh brings an eclectic list of artist out to a recording studio in Joshua Tree in the middle of the California desert to write and produce an album in about a week. Most of the songs are very experimental and out there but you can see the seeds being planted for many artists work they will go on to do later.
