Me, from 14 years old to 52 years of age and every day I jam out to Queensryche from the original line up. Rarely do I listen to the newest line up with La todd, he's not the voice of Queensryche, although he does sing good but he just isn't Geoff Tate.

From the same area they were playing (Puget Sound in the house). Went to school with Geoff's sister Perry. I think she hated all of the attention at school. They were an inspiration in Tacoma at the time. We all loved them and we all knew they were going to be great! Seen them before they were even signed. Mindcrime is a great album!

QR will always be one of my favorite bands. Regardless of age and voices not being what they were... Geoff spits rock god vocals for two decades. He and Chris wrote those songs. I still play them loud. I close my eyes and I am back there on hot Southern Cali summer nights. Windows down, stereo on 10. Cruising in my muscle car. The '80s. A glorious time to be alive.

I think this interview actually told a lot of that story if you read between the lines. Chris was a MAJOR part of the band. Chris and Geoff were the primary creative force. Geoff has always marched a little more to the beat of his own drum. More varied musical tastes. The first one with the desire to work on original material. Geoff confirmed here that Chris was somewhat of a band leader for them. I feel like he probably served as the bridge (no pun intended, but happy coincidence) between Geoff and the rest of the band. The middle-ground. The most tastes in common with Geoff while sharing more tastes with the rest of the guys at the same time. After Chris left, they'd not only lost one of their primary creative forces but also a band leader. As Geoff was always a passionate songwriter he stepped up regarding the creative side and probably attempted to steer the ship a lot himself as well. As time went on, decisions and directions gained less and less traction (consider one of the most appreciated post-Chris albums was probably Tribe and Chris was back in the mix for that one). Then they went and put out Dedicated to Chaos. It tanked. Hard. Far more than any other release. Geoff and the rest of the guys just weren't gelling. I feel that Geoff got scapegoated a lot for that failiure of that album. The truth was the guys just couldn't work together anymore. They had struggled to since Chris and it was a miracle they hard fought to keep it going for so long. All of this just came to a head following DtC. The split was the best thing to happen to them. The only thing I have never agreed with is the continued use of the Queensryche name. Queensryche died that day. Hell, it could easily be argued they died back when Chris left and they were fighting for their lives ever since. The rest of the guys formed a great unit with Todd and under any other name (personal opinion) could have been a fantastic and far more respectable metal band. The biggest thing being the band finally saw eye to eye on things. Geoff is great now with what he's going. The others have their thing going strong. I feel if they were to "reunite" at any point it would HAVE to be a complete reunion. Chris included. A single, final album. The last album to bear the Queensryche name would be my dream but a single gig or mini-tour of a very small number of select shows would be the more feasible. I don't see it happening though unfortunately. Chris is done. Especially on the touring front. Without Chris it's just not gonna happen.
@TheMetalPigeon
@TheMetalPigeon 2 жыл бұрын
@@j800r_aswell Nice perspective, and yeah I agree with your summary --- your point about Chris being done and not wanting to tour is spot on, but I totally could see these guys maybe one day here getting together the original lineup just for a roundtable retrospective interview or conversation and perhaps that even leading to a Seattle area concert. Or maybe the existing QR lineup inviting all of the former members to a show for a special one-off guest thing like the Scorpions did with their old members in Wacken a few years back. One can hope anyway.

Seeing Geoff with such tactful and thoughtful introspection is refreshing as hell. I could never understand what it was like to be in any of their shoes, so I’ll simply say this was a great interview. Chris’ writing and performing is what drew me into Queensryche, and I stayed once I saw how amazing things happened with them all there. I did and do love Q2K and Tribe as well. Promised Land is in my top 10 concerts of all time, and I LOVED their evolution into HITNF. The Voice Inside has been my favorite QR song since the first time I listened to it (yeah, even above others from “those” huge albums). Wherever their paths take them, I wish them all well in their careers and their lives.

@@davidgotteri Agreed! Their sound did evolve, and I understand some people didn’t care for that. That being said, I think it was an extraordinarily tight rock record, which was in shorter supply then, and still very powerful songs (not an easy task to combine those). Hit The Black nails the heavy side, You handles the JCW fans, Cuckoo’s Nest and Sign Of The Times covers the political, Voice Inside is the introspective highlight, as is Some People Fly. Chris performed a few years ago as accompaniment to Lily Cornell Silver performing Black Gives Way To Blue from AIC, in the background and out of spotlight, and I still felt that power (from her as well, she was amazing).

Very low key, humble, been there done that and learned from it demeanor! When speaking of Chris DeGarmo's departure he spoke of disappointment in the timing of how and when he left, but then, went into how Chris was pretty much carrying the load of everything for the band from the beginning,, and from that I can see how Chris was probably so burnt by now as well as seeing everything he was "The Captain" of (as Geoff put it) going down in flames with the record company bailing and all,, how can you fault the guy?? Still, hearing this band brings me back to such a wonderful time in my life growing up! As well as being influenced to want to play, drums, in bands as I did myself!!! What a great era! They made up at a festival in 2017. Geoff was performing with Avantasia and Queensryche was performing as well. Geoff Tate said he stood on the side of the stage and watched the entire show for the first time as a fan. Called it an amazing experience. Afterwards, he met up with his former band members. Hugged. Talked for little over half an hour catching up. Then, went over to Todd and told him how amazing his vocals were. Todd told him how he first met Tate back in 2008 after a Queensryche show. Told Tate how he still has the picture they both took together. Then, Geoff and Todd took a new picture together.

Queensryche are such a legendary band, massively influential. Now they consist of lawyers, falling out and sueing each other. They're turning into the Journey of metal, which is a real shame as they are too good to go down that sad road. Journey are a joke now and I'd hate to see Queensryche turn into that circus. Here's hoping they bury their differences and get it together. However Chris is a massive piece of that puzzle and he's happy in his new life. Geoffs voice is on another planet

I'm not holding my breath, but it would be cool. Added note, Hear In The Now Frontier maybe wasn't their greatest album, but it was pretty good. I think with Chris not only family played a part in in his leaving, but also the demise of their record company, no promotion of the album, all that together was the "nail in the coffin" to call it quits.

Great detailed interview! I really enjoyed and appreciated this. Lifelong original member Queensryche fan. Not to take anything away from current lineup or Todd La Torre because I was also a Crimson Glory fan and bought their releases. But to me there is only one frontman, singer, theatrical performer in Geoff that has everything to do with what encompassed Queensryche and their recording and live performances.

OM came out and all my friends were trying to tell me how great a band Queensryche was/is. I'm like, yeah - this is the band I've been telling you about for the past few years. I heard "The Lady Wore Black" and I was hooked. Picked up the EP and was completely blown away. As Geoff said - derivative of their influences.... But, as Spinal Tap said, turned up to 11.

There was a moment in time . In 1984 at a small club in Baltimore . " Hammerjack s" that I will never forget . Geoff climbed up to me and vigorously shook my hand and stayed there while Chris was ripping the lead to " Take Hold of The Flame " . My first hearing of them was a few months earlier when I was mopping a floor . I was a dishwasher . Had the stereo on since I was the last to leave . Stood there .. " Wow .. Iron Maiden has a new song ! " then I later found out it was a new band called Queensryche . Through the years with every album release . I was stoked . . My heart broke on Hear in The Now Frontier . It just didn't move me . I personally don't think it could have had constant airplay and promotion . It still wouldn't have done well . A few songs popped up through the years but never the impact again . I hope before time ends . They get back for one more time in their original form .

Im glad I was small apart of the 1980's Hairband groups. It was an amazing time for my generation. Especially being 21 in 1981. All the girls the great bands/music and parties. In Sept. 1987, I saw the end of a great music generation slowly coming to an end. And knew I had to go onto a new start or page/ career to be successful financially in my life. So I went back into the military. The US Air Force. It was a good thig for me. Glad I did or it could be me on the streets no money and homeless.

HOLY CRAP. I didn’t realize the whole Dave O link with RFO. Makes perfect sense. There’s never been anything like that album, before or since. Also his shoutout to Edward Ka-Spell… I would love to listen to someone interview Geoff abt his primary musical influences.

Very very cool interview. So hard to believe that one of the greatest singers in the history of rock started out by just singing along and someone recognized that it sounded “pretty good”. 🤣 Not sure how his level of talent ever hid itself and how he didn’t know. The dude is the best of the best. Always heard that Queensryche had a lot of bad blood. VERY REFRESHING to see no shit talking and credit being given where it is due. The older I get the more important it seems to me that we should treat each other with kindness. It’s easy to talk shit not so easy to be a man and do what Mr. Tate did in this video. This interview was exceptionally good. Right on par with the video Jerry Cantrell did for Gibson. Hats off to Queensryche. Their early music was a huge part of my younger years and enjoyed every note. Thank you guys for making my life better!!!

I have seen so many concerts not many I haven’t seen from Kiss , Dio, Pantera, In Flames, Nevermore, Opeth. You name them I have probably seen them. Queensryche’s Empire tour where they played the entire mindcrime album stands above them all. Even notching out the always impressive RUSH which was always on fire live.

I went to a late breakfast one day in my small town in western Washington...I sat alone at a small table, and looked at the only other couple in the restaurant, to see Geoff Tate and his wife. I so wanted to ask for a photo, but they were just doing their couple thing, that I totally understand...I just didn't want to interrupt. I've seen Queensyche in concert a couple of times, but seeing Geoff Tate just eating breakfast in my little town "grill", was pretty cool!

Something that always impressed me about QR is that they were masters of small venues. I caught them at a couple universities in basketball arenas, and they did something I'd never heard done before (or since). They played QUIETLY. Don't get me wrong, it was still loud, but you weren't being crushed in your seat by a wall of noise.

I did a decade in prison (The 1990’s) and I purchased every Queensryche record as they were released. All I had was music to deal with the prison insanity. Queensryche was a big part of that. I listened to everything that got released from many different artist. I didn’t allow radio stations to dictate what I listened. MTV and radio didn’t give everyone a fair shake. I felt like instead of radio playing the same old stuff over & over again they could have broadened there horizons. I felt there should’ve been enough room on the radio for everyone but that’s not how it worked and a lot of artists were putting out some of the best music of there careers only to get ignored by radio. Queensryche was one of these bands. Thank you Queensryche for being totally different from everyone else. The music took me out of that crazy place and brought me to a serene , tranquil place.
