This is one of the reasons I love clone wars so much and why an anthology style fits the universe so well - it makes a galaxy wide conflict actually seem galaxy wide rather than confined to at most 5 planets.

It didn't feel small prior to 2014. Then someone threw out the three and a half decades of world building to make room for a movie trilogy (and books) with absolutely nothing new to say or show. It's a lack of imagination and bravery that stops them from taking risks by exploring new worlds, characters, and stories. Those things are considered gambles by Disney so instead they tie everyone and everything to something that is already well known and marketable. Disney bought the franchise while having no vision for it, aside from the outlines they cannibalized from George Lucas.
@QuestingRefuge
@QuestingRefuge 2 жыл бұрын
The new trilogy really is frustrating (& The Solo movie). I think it's actually worse that I CAN see stuff they were trying to say (especially The Last Jedi) because I think there was a lot of potential even in The Rise of Skywalker. I'm hoping they will allow more freedom and gambles to new directors after how the trilogy went. I've liked the shows a lot more from what I've seen so far. The Bad Batch has probably been my favorite.

To be fair, as someone who was thoroughly invested in that three and a half decades of world-building, 95% of it needed to go. Yeah, we "lost" the work of good authors such as Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy, Kyle Katarn, or the canonicity of Knights of the Old Republic, but almost everything in the EU either: * tried to do what the Star Wars movies or previous EU works did already but with a fresh coat of paint (Kueller, the Darksaber, every Imperial leader who was clearly trying to be Thrawn 2.0, how many times the Death Star plans got stolen after Kyle Katarn...) * tried to co-opt existing storylines or relationships so that the author could push a pairing (Callista or any other girl of the week for Luke) * tried to contradict other writers due to liking or not liking a given character or mechanic (Boba Fett falling into the Sarlacc again after escaping, the Correllian Trilogy trying to redefine how everything in Star Wars worked) * pushed an edgy twist just for the sake of it (Palpy's back and Luke is EEEEEEVIL NOW in Dark Empire) * had no idea how to write well-rounded characters so just made them broken as fuck (Callista again, Luke when written by almost everyone, the fucking Sun Crusher...) * was just plain incompetent (Crystal Star, The Glove of Darth Vader, the Jedi Prince series) * was just plain stupid (Skippy the Jedi Droid, Booba Fett (no, not a misspelling of Boba Fett), Jaxxon, Beldorian the Splended (aka Hutt Jedi)) I picked the worst examples because they're the most glaringly obvious ones, but the rot ran deep in the old EU. It almost feels like the problems of the Sequel Trilogy were problems inherent to old works in the EU as well (le gasp!). It's almost as if Star Wars is a universe so broad in its scope yet so vague in what is possible that with no oversight, everything goes to shit quickly. The EU needed to be expunged. Take off the rose-colored glasses, Sturgeon's Law applied to an absurd degree to it. The EU gave us a lot of things, but it was in such a state that there was no other way to handle it by that point. The faults of the movies that came after paint it in a damning light, not unjustifiably. But considering the best parts of the old EU are being recanonized, there's nothing to suggest that you won't have your Crystal Star if you really want it so bad. Despite the sequel trilogy failing to live up, Disney have kept a far more coherent handle on things, especially since Filoni was basically promoted to head of continuity and creative direction, and while there have been some... *major* bumps in the road (specifically four of them released between 2015 and 2019), the new EU I feel is a general improvement on the old one, in no small part because they've brought in stuff from the old EU where it could work.

@raetekusu1

@@stanfordlewinson7304 If it was a parody, then someone didn't realize it was. Booba Fett was the one thing I mentioned that was a parody at any level, as he was first introduced by Zahn as an April Fools joke, yes, but then a planned novel called "Son of Clone Wars" was going to completely seriously introduce him to the main EU canon shortly before the EU canon getting jettisoned. George Lucas famously joked that Obi-Wan Kenobi was from a planet called Stewjon during an interview with Jon Stewart (or rather JON STEWart, STEW JONart?). Within hours, this joke of a comment was applied to the EU as a whole, and now even in the new EU, Obi-Wan's homeworld is still wherever the hell Stewjon is. Hell, the fact that the fucking Holiday Special was considered canon alone should speak volumes. No one knew what parody was. If anyone in any kind of control implied or joked about *anything at all*, overzealous Star Wars writers would canonize it, context be damned. So your comment that some of the stuff I mentioned was parody is true on the surface, but "*was*" is the operative word. Booba Fett's existence invalidates the consistency fixing you say happened.

The universe feels small because Disney is a large corp, and there is nobody in a large corporation who will approve taking a risk on something new. I think the smartest decision Lucasfilm could make, to solve this small universe kind of problem. And that's to create a Star Wars series under a more universal title, so that way it's not exactly focusing on a single character that has to connect with other known or popular characters, but a show that just jumps around to different characters and places around the galaxy, to tell their stories, whether they be about known or unknown characters, but without interconnecting the characters to other popular ones. Honestly, The Mandalorian series is a pretty good example, while we do see the likes of Luke and Ashoka and so on, but the title is "THE Mandalorian" but Din Djaren is only A Mandalorian, so the title seems to be more universal in including all Mandalorians, and making those interconnections with known and unknown Mandalorian characters.

Taste in fiction being subjective, I think for me we've hit the point where there is sort of a dynastic feeling to Star Wars. It was definitely part of the old EU as well, but it hits different to see in film and on screen over and over again. I've complained a lot about how small things feel in Star Wars, but I think you make a good point that its a feature not a bug. I think this has helped me refocus my issue. Star Wars is frozen in carbonite and stuck on the wall. There isn't a George Lucas telling their story, just people telling stories about George's story. These stories aren't all bad or all good, but they rarely put anything new in. The six Star Wars movies we got from George always built up and built out. Even when it was bad, it was another building block that could be built on later. Even when he was no longer involved in the day to day, he gave feedback that went into the EU. Now he's not involved (and more power to him given the shit he's taken) there's not a driving force building it. It's just there on the wall. Sure you can change the lighting, you can paint the wall, but you don't have a living thing anymore. You have a picture of Luke Skywalker, digitally recreated and synthetically acted. I think you can build new things and add without cutting those connections that make Star Wars cohesive. KOTOR has been a big deal in the fandom for a while and it connects to a lot of Star Wars things without having to use people we know. For a more recent example, how Bryce Dallas Howard directed her episode in S1 of the Mandalorian, which used the AT-ST as something out of a Kaiju movie where previously it had been famously the things destroyed by furry Viet Cong. Old dog, new trick. Anyways, I have to make dinner. Good video, even if I'm not all on board.
@QuestingRefuge

Thank you! You've given me some more to think on. This has me realizing just how many aspects there are to consider. I do think there's more new than is often given credit for since Lucas has stepped away, but maybe the problem is a lot of the new has been hit or miss, while it's still easy to see how they tried to repeat the previous iterations. I may have to dive into the newer Star Wars some more in the future to explore this further. And now I really want to revisit KOTOR, it's been forever.

@@QuestingRefuge There's definitely more new going on than people realize, but I think its also not on screen. The comics have done some stuff. High Republic has definitely changed the lens and how its focused. Also, to be critical of the nostalgia side of things, the old EU had plenty of subpar stories. I don't think we'll be seeing the likes of Han Solo's evil twin cousin in the new canon.

It makes my heart ache that well-reasoned opinions like this aren't the norm when it comes to Star Wars. However, I have found resonance with other videos, like "In Defense Of The Last Jedi" by Filmjoy - so we are not alone in these opinions. 🤗 Personally, that final scene in Rogue One is almost alchemical, transmuting all of the effort and pain and sacrifice from from the past hour through a crucible of character loss, heated by Vader's presence. It turned a Good Film into a Great Film, in my mind; Gareth Edwards is a master of scale, and I hope he continues to get more work.

The issue is.. George Lucas didn't make a starwars as a universe. He made a story about the Skywalker. If you're going to expand universe you need to ditch the main characters from the original story. Can you imagine if Iron Man was on Captain America and Thor as a main character when they started. It would have sucked because it was a Marvel movie, not an iron man movie. It's why the last three movies in star wars sucked because it wasn't a Skywalker movie anymore. But if you're going to expand, ditch old characters. No Boba fett. No Luke Skywalker. No sons and daughters of main characters. Just expand. New planets. Or show how planet actually works.
@QuestingRefuge

@@QuestingRefuge no one has made a star wars film project yet that truly expands so well never know. Mando has Luke and Boba Ep 7 used Han when they didn't need an old old man helping them fight a young persons war. Ep 9 rehashes Palpatine Rogue one is the closet. Because it's a director prequel though it HAS to use characters from previous world because they're important to story but it did a good job with what they had. Darth taking those rebels out at the end COMPLETELY is justified because of how it effects him in ep 4.....hes clearly embarrassed and PISSED getting on board in Ep 4 because he's embarrassed about Rogue One and his plans getting stolen. He tells at his daughter.... Probably didn't sense it was his daughter because he's so mad at the rebels screwing up his plans, he's choking people left and right and barking orders. It made sense But we havent truly had the courage to break off and do something in world but different. And I don't think George ever wanted it that way honestly. Think about history. Does a general from ww2 all old and out dated show up in Vietnam like... Don't worry Ive done this before. I got this.... So why did we need our old characters for 7,8, and 9. Because they don't wanna try new. It's better to have a cameo by Darth Maul for some stupid reason that to let the Solo world grow. It's why they're going to bring back Mace even though we don't need him. The issue is people love star wars. They want more but realize there's only so much story to tell before you make Luke and Annie obsolete,which they did. How do you fix it? Expand. Pick new character and new planets in the universe. But no one will do that.

It literally is Star Trek. If you want to have your little head canon and say it’s not that’s cool, but it is legally and canonically Trek.

@@ActualFandom It doesn't look or act like Star Trek and doesn't work like any past Star Trek or follow past canon so they can call it Star Trek all they want but the vast majority of the fan base doesn't see it as anything Star Trek. It is some kind of completely different science fiction show that mistakenly is called Star Trek by the clowns running that circus over their super special Paramount Network. Just like the Disney Wars trilogy was not Star Wars and was just utter garbage. They can keep trying to re-work and re-do all the classic SyFy they want but they keep failing at it. They need to focus on building their own new creative franchises to add all the new bling bling they want and can call it whatever new name they want. The Orville is far more Star Trek than STD. You can call a polished turd a piece of gold all day but in the end it is still a polished turd.

@@ssumrall70 The show is extremely popular and successful. The fanbase loves it, unless you're in a little internet echo chamber. Get your perspective and feeling sin order. Facts dont care about your feelings, bud.

I stopped the video around 2:50. I'm pretty sure it's going to be one those videos with no real analysis, just feelings, "themes", and plain and simple errors (I'm already cringing hard because of the stormtroopers bit).

@@QuestingRefuge You do know that the opposition leader in Ukraine has been behind bars for years right? Also their 'hero' president somehow owns a $13,000,000 mansion in Orlando, Florida. They have government aligned militias that actually fly Nazi flags complete with swastikas. No? If you want to live in a cartoon go right ahead. The world is far, far more complicated than that. Don't even get me started on Biden's idiot son making $50,000+ a month by a Ukraine energy company for his 'expertise'. Just a coincidence I'm sure. 😏

This, I could only watch five minutes into it. This dude doesn't shut up about the Empire being his definition of "evil" and trying to compare it to real world entities in a superfluous attempt of Leftist political paralleling. The Empire has been portrayed as positive and dutiful many times throughout both Legends and Canon.
