Fun fact: The opening crawls were painfully tedious to shoot in the original trilogy. This is because the text was on one big cel on the floor they slowly panned the camera on. They had to redo the shot every time the camera went ever so slightly off center. Now, they're done digitally because every video editor has the effect as a preset.

The only thing I might also change you didn't say is change "There are heroes on both sides" - good but misinterpretable - to "Both sides have their heroes", which still sets up a dichotomy between the sides while making them both personable and rationable. The Separatists aren't pure evil, they're a SIDE, with beliefs and people who risk their lives to defend them. The new line works well with "Evil is everywhere", too - leaving you really wondering who is "good" and foreshadowing Palpy. One flaw with the ROTS one you didn't mention is it probably has the most inaccurate statement in any of the crawls. "The Republic is crumbling!" In context it isn't referring to moral degradation or corruption, it is explicitly referring to losing the war in military terms, that the republic is faltering against Dooku's forces... that the war is causing a struggle, either militarily, logistically or economically. but we don't see much, if any of that at all in the movie... Coruscant is... seemingly entirely unaffected, we don't even see any of the lingering damage from the recent attack! it's probably the most pristine recent battleground in film/TV history.. and senators are on open-topped platforms attending operas a couple of days later... comparing to the source of inspiration, old newsreels, The USA looked more affected by WW2 in a visceral sense, nightlife diminished, bond drives, signs that the war was HAPPENING and had both direct and indirect effects on the homefront, but Coruscant had enemy boots on the ground, a battle of incomprehensible scale happening right in it and above it. The entire setting of Coruscant should have felt like London during the Blitz in this movie, but it doesn't and it feels like the crawl is just lying to you.

Until recently, when playing the LEGO Star Wars complete saga, I finally understood that "the phantom menace" refers to Palpatine/Sith and how he is the menace behind the curtains, like how you can't see a ghost/phantom. Before that I actually had no idea what it meant and never 'cared' enough to look it up, even though I perfectly knew the meaning of the words, just couldn't relate it to anything.

Another point about the use of capitalization is that the earlier movies only capitalized the important named stuff, like you would when first encountering a character in a screenplay, so it works, Rise of Skywalker just threw that screenplay-esque capslock out the window by capitalizing "revenge".
@worldtreesagas Жыл бұрын
The one thing about Return of the Jedi's crawl I didn't hear mentioned is how it pumps the twist. "When completed, this ultimate weapon will spell certain doom...." but ACTUALLY (note the appropriate caps) the Death Star does not need to be completed to spell certain doom for them, making that twist so much more shocking. Anyway, very fun video, thanks!

IMO, the reason the first crawl reads so much better and so differently from the others (forgetting for a moment that it's the first) is that it was originally *six paragraphs* but Lucas let Brian de Palma and Jay Cocks rewrite it. Those guys sadly never wrote anything else for Star Wars again but damn if they didn't NAIL the franchise's very first impression on its audience.

Interesting idea for a video, love it! I mostly agree with your take, my only major critique is that the Force Awakens’ crawl doesn’t really establish what the New Republic is. Considering the movie doesn’t either, it makes sense why this is, but that should have definitely been a priority when building on the established world. Same with the First Order, which is necessary since they are the main antagonists of the trilogy. Otherwise, I never noticed that connection between Return of the Jedi and a New Hope, such strong storytelling!

You actually forgot to include the actual best opening crawl of the whole series, man. It goes like this: “Corneria. Fourth planet of the Lylat system. The evil Andross turned this once thriving system into a wasteland of near extinction. General Pepper of the Cornerian army was successful in exiling this maniacal scientist to the barren, deserted planet, Venom. Five years later, General Pepper noticed strange activity coming from Venom. James McCloud, Pigma Dengar, and Peppy Hare of the Star Fox team were sent to investigate. Upon their arrival, Pigma betrayed the team, and James and Peppy were captured by Andross. Peppy barely escaped Venom and returned home to tell James' son Fox about his father's fate. A few years have passed. Andross has again invaded the Lylat system. General Pepper has turned to a new Star Fox team headed by Fox McCloud to save Corneria and free the Lylat system, once again.” Jokes aside this shit is really good tbh
