Zach is absolutely correct. Even at $30 000, that’s an absurdly high cost for a battery. Who can stomach that? So many issues with this 2035 EV target. Can’t wait for this law to be tossed out. So many issues including: - High replacement costs - EVs not environmentally friendly at all - high costs of EVs - lack of charging infrastructure All the power to the Motormouth channel for bringing these questions and concerns into the dialogue!

Loved the "disposable" comment as that's the concern of all of us that think about every dollar being spent and is the root of the EV low sales issue IMO. Car batteries clearly need to be designed to be repairable, i.e. made up of many small bits so if one fails, it can be replaced at relatively low cost - just like replacing a water pump on an IC Engine
@thepkism Жыл бұрын
Zac is SO right when it comes to battery electric. I have a huge issue with the disposable nature of these vehicles. How the heck is that environmentally friendly? It’s insane. That’s what it is.

Surely the car is parted out as much as possible and not really crushed, but yeah it's such a waste to not be able to replace battery components in a more modular fashion. It's like cellphones being so disposable nowadays but at a much more massive level.

@@andreaspencer9813writing off a 5yo vehicle isn’t environmentally friendly either. BEVs don’t start to become “environmentally sound” until after 100,000km. So going with an average 15k/km per year a BEV doesn’t start to make sense until year 7. Long story short BEVs don’t make sense.

Hyundai is basically committing insurance fraud by refusing to sell replacement battery packs at a fair price to allow them to be replaced rather than written off.. At the current time the pack cost of a typical EV battery pack in about $170cdn/kw, so the manufacturer's cost is about $12 grand Cdn and with a reasonable markup it should sell for about 20 grand Cdn not 60 grand!
@LYNDONGOLDEN Жыл бұрын
Thank you for staying on the "Hyundai battery" path. Hyundai may be in the spotlight at this moment, but the whole EV industry can learn from this. Post-accident diagnostics, evaluation, and serviceability of EV batteries is something that needs more attention. Once manufacturers gain more experience with designing modular (repairable) systems, repair costs and fears may recede.
@julianhudson Жыл бұрын
E.V. will never be cheap to repair compared to I.C.E. vehicles. When the high tech complexity starts the moment you put the energy into the power supply unit, you know you're going to face a huge bill. The gas tank's simplicity of manufacture, maintenance which is zero, lack of having to prep it in cold weather and it's safe location in the event of an accident including cheap replacement costs can't be replicated by a Zero Emissions Vehicle.
@jhelotes5627 Жыл бұрын
@@julianhudson , never? I have never owned an ice vehicle that was cheap to repair. Seems that there has always been a correlation between the cost of labor/parts and the vehicle. Further, an ICE vehicle is far more complex than EV's. Just think of all the parts and components that EV's render obsolete. Consumer demand, mass production and rapidly emerging battery technologies should further reduce EV's retail costs. This is basic supply and demand economics. EV's are in early adoption, so expect manufacturer's, like Tesla, to continue lowering costs while eagerly improving and innovating. Consumer's should decide which type of vehicle is best for their needs and pocketbook. Governments that impose deadlines onto the automotive industry and ignore consumer demand are making a mistake.
@julianhudson Жыл бұрын
@jhelotes5627 the only part of your comment that I agree with is the last section where you said that the government must not be involved in manipulating the market in favor of one technology over another. What we have going on with E.V. subsidies is classic Marxism where the government assumes control of the means of production through either outright nationalization of the factories or else by legislating what will be made and how much. This is the USSR transferred over to the West. There's no way we would be talking about E.V.'s if it weren't for the fact of the Marxists who run the Green movement. They hate free enterprise, they despise freedom of choice and the believe that economic growth is evil. E.V. powered cars will never be cheap because they are inherently more complex to build and are more reliant on technology than are I.C.E. vehicles. They are practically throw away products because their batteries are structurally built into the car. Insurance companies are reluctant to repair an E.V. just because of the risk involved with possibly having a compromised battery pack and the expense of replacement. The E.V. industry wouldn't exist without government mandates and subsidies that hide the true costs of purchasing an E.V. The taxpayer is getting ripped off because he is the lie one footing the bill. Government subsidies to E.V. buyers are the most expensive way for the government to purchase watts. The whole alternative energy thing is just a way of transferring the nation's wealth to the political class and their private sector rich donors. More of the earth's raw materials are used to make E.V.'s than are used to make I.C.E. vehicles. Lastly E.V.'s aren't zero emissions. Lots of emissions are produced elsewhere to mine and refine the materials that go into making them and which make them heavier than I.C.E. vehicles

My Subie's start-stop feature works pretty well and I can say that for every 50-75 miles I drive, I save around .25 gallons of gas in stop-n-go traffic. It's not a lot, but I think it's worth putting up with a little vibration at the stop light to save the gas. It's really not a bother to use IMO, especially if you use it together with Auto Vehicle Hold. To restart, I touch my brake to reactivate my engine just before the car in front of me starts moving. I have the AVH button up on the screen next to the auto start/stop, so it's easy to press. Subaru recommends using both features together but you don't have to.

Also not having to be at the mercy of the oil lobby and their unpredictable increases in gasoline prices. Not to mention wars constantly affecting fuel prices. ‘F’ that. I saw an IONQ5 on a highway the other day and remembered your 2-part show on it. I gotta say that the car’s ground clearance is very low. I’m estimating 5 inches tops. Regarding the replacement costs for batteries in hybrids, it really depends on the brand. It's one advantage of Toyota, as there are so many of them on the roads. There is a place in IL called Best Hybrid Batteries that sells replacement batteries (eg) for a 2013 Toyota Prius for $1449. A new one from the dealer is $2549 if you prefer that option. Labour is likely about another $1000. As Zack mentioned, for a hybrid, the batteries are inside the vehicle and are better protected from damage so you don't write off your $60,000 car by running over a muffler pipe by accident.

Toyota has been ahead of the curve on this... they have pretty much held back on pure EV (BEV) production and are pushing hybrids that give the consumer the best of both worlds, excellent fuel economy without the range anxiety... plus, you can build 90 hybrids for every BEV and still cut down on emissions drastically... 1 BEV will remove ~ 4 tons of carbon from the atmosphere each year while 90 hybrids will remove ~ 140 tons each year... Like Zack I'm for BEVs as part of the auto makeup, however, I believe the market should dictate their viability in the marketplace, not government mandates... if BEVs are to succeed they should have to satisfy the consumer in the marketplace, not force them to buy something that doesn't work for them.

You are correct in saying that we need more information. From what I read in the Globe and Mail the penalty for not reaching the 20 percent zero emissions target in 2026 is a $20,000 fine per car that does not make the target. I cannot tell if this is at the OEM level or the dealer level. It is possible that a manufacturer will leave the Canadian market. Or overnight all ICE cars will have the $20,000 penalty added to the price. Then the cheapest new car would be in the $45K range. I also think this will be hard on many dealers. This will also push up ised car values. This is going to be hard on the millions of Canadians that are just making it.

EVs may make sense environmentally, but there are many unknowns: infrastructure, including charging for condo/apt dwellers, overpricing/reliability at commercial chargers, taxation to recover the loss of fuel taxes. Taxation alone may end up being a major factor, with reduction in corporate and road tax income as well as loss of employment in the oil and gas industry. Will the government charge up front at time of purchase, based on average mileage travelled yearly, and life expectancy of the vehicle, or on electric chargers, with home units being metered separately? The list goes on.

But I did some research and calculation that the EV is actually not clean unless I drive about 50-60k km and the price premium I pay for EV would not be recuperated until I drive about 70-80k km. I keep cars for 7-8 years and my mileage is around 12k km per year only. So, 5 out of 8 years I would drive a dirtier car than a modern fuel-efficient mild hybrid and 6 out of 8 years I would drive recuperating the price premium. Recently I am getting worried on battery depreciation and resale value of an electric car of say, 70% battery health, and for the last few months, about accidents affecting the battery pack. If 2 cells are damaged out of 10-15 why the whole pack need to be changed and not those cells? I have hold of my plans for BEV purchase but have an open mind. The battery swap technology is picking up. But I don't think I will ever buy a BEV if the replacement cost of battery is too high. My calculation is after 8 years, when the car value is around 30%-40% based on my mileage, the battery pack repair cost should not be more than half of that.

A hybrid start stop system is never ever going to wear out the starter motor, because it not got one. It has a motor-generator that takes over that function.

Regarding the auto start/stop issue, both our cars have it. The Venza (hybrid) doesn't have a dedicated "starter" in it, it simply uses MG1 to "start" the engine so it is a very smooth and seamless process. Our Forester uses the standard starter and it is not smooth at all. In most cases, we disable it. In my opinion, the constant starting and stopping is harder on the vehicle as a whole. It's harder on the battery, the starter motor (which is hopefully more robust) and the "shakiness" of the constant starting and stopping might even wear things like engine mounts out sooner over time. I think auto start/stop features are fine for hybrids as they can manage that process much easier, but I don't like it for regular gas powered vehicles.

I turn the auto stop/start button off everytime I get in my car, I wish the darn thing would stay off for good, it's really annoying for stop and go traffic in the city (I don't think it's good for the starter to have this feature running IMO)

RE start stop comparison to hybrid . SOME manufactures hybrids start the gas engine using the the electric drive motor, also they usually have a smaller gas engine to go along withe the electric motor, not as hard to turn over. Glad to hear about asking for battery cost up front. I would get replacement cost insurance policy with a new EV just so when they want to wright off the EV you can get a brand new one. But I guess the policy would be a lot higher than normal. Great job you two.

We live in a rural area with limited infrastructure for charging plug ins. We don’t drive a lot of miles annually but a typical round trip is ~50 to 150 miles. Sometimes we’ll drive 600 in a day to get to our destination. Sounds line hybrid could work if forced into one. Our 2019 CRV averaged 33-36 mpg for over 52k miles. We traded it for a CX-50 which so far gets ~26 mpg. I’m guessing that we bought the wrong new car.

In regards to hybrids... Got myself a Volvo V60 Polestar PHEV in Winnipeg. Been driving since I got it at the beginning of the December and have not used the gas engine once, and that's in Winnipeg. Love it and wish there were more wagons to choose from but this Volvo is amazing.

I appreciate you bringing up that most EV owners will never have to replace their batteries. It’s when it’s damaged is the issue. Too many people assume that the battery will need to be replaced due to degradation, and that’s just not true. Edit: on your mention of the Leaf, those batteries are not liquid cooled and can degrade much faster than other EV batteries. Virtually all EVs sold today have liquid cooled batteries that will not overheat and will avoid premature degradation.

Politicians can be voted out and end dates can be pushed back, the electrical infrastructure will be the limiting factor. Keep in mind governments are also pushing home heat pumps, which use a lot of power.

Well, I hope Hyundai invites them to the Canadian launch/press event of the 2024 Santa Fe, if there is such a thing. It looks to be an impressive redesign. Plus, saying the replacement cost of EV batteries are super expensive isn't like a Diesel-gate scandal or anything like that for Hyundai to get super upset with. It just another thing to add to the pile of issues with EVs.

A big concern for me is, what sort of resale value will a 10 year old EV have? I think these vehicles will become disposable and that would not be good for the environment. And to be brutally honest, I always enjoy your content.

I hate the auto start stop, yes you can turn it off but you have to turn it off every time you get in. I wish there was an option to have it off as default

Hey there. Happy new year. Love the channel. I have a Genesis GV70 and a Santa Fe hybrid. Both have been near flawless. The Genesis just has window trim that seems to have the clear coat that is peeling. But otherwise GREAT vehicles. Cheers.

I was watching Fargo season five (great program) and they were in a Kia dealership and they pronounce the car the "Spor-tahj" just like Andrea, of course it's based in Minnesota so it makes since. It was just so funny it made me think of Andrea.

I own a 2021 Crosstrek which has the engine stop/start "feature". It drove me crazy as when starting the Subaru flat four motor it is really noticeable and annoying. Found a dongle on line that easily installs and costs about $100 - it defeats the default "on" feature unless you wish to enable it. Best $ I ever spent.

True about the resistance - this Canadian will NEVER be forced to buy an EV. There are ways around stupid mandates.

We elect politicians to represent us, not to tell us what to buy, what to say, what to think. The whole EV “strategy “ would barely garner a D- if it was presented to any business school.

I think the auto stop for my ford f150 is the only thing that has actually worked with no issues heading towards year 7. It also self regulates according with electrical draw (temp, ac) etc. so it does not do it in all conditions.

Zack and Andrea have always seemed very fair to me on EVs. We are electrifying for very good reasons, but in the short term, there are some issues and EVs don't work for everyone. As Zack said, 2035 is 11 years off, so there is plenty of time for the issues to get resolved, and progress for instance on charging networks is made every year. If you are worried about battery longevity and charging, one answer is to get a Tesla, because they do seem to stand by the warranty and their charging network is the best. I have a Model Y.

Every Toyota I’ve ever sat in (mostly Uber drivers drive Toyota) they all rattle creak and squeak. The interior trim is like a bucket of plastic parts. Can’t believe a grand Hylander is #1
@kiwan5425 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. There are many aspects to consider when you buy a product. Toyota is failing at so many aspects except longevity. You will see Hyundai-Kia catching up Toyota and VW in a decade. Just like Samsung-LG did.
