I really like the topic of this video . . . question yourself. It's because of this principle that I go on Pubmed every now and then to look into if eating plant based is actually superior to eating animal products for environmental sustainability and global health. The answer is almost a resounding yes (as much as any such answer exists in scientific literature . . .) for anyone who lives in a part of the world with industrialized food production and isn't themselves a subsistence farmer who grazes animals on non-arable pasture land. Obviously exceptions exist, and the body of evidence isn't yet sufficient to make any definite claims. But we have data to point us in the right direction, and sometimes any action is better than no action. You can actually make a solid argument for including some animal products in your diet if your focus is solely on optimizing personal health. As soon as you adopt a broader perspective this argument becomes VERY difficult to make (depending on where you live), and I would say impossible for most, but only in the context of current food systems. Sometimes an essential part of questioning yourself is questioning your priorities. Awesome videos, keep it up. You've helped my body weight training in a lot of ways.

cory trevor thanks for sharing this. I certainly think being “plant based” is essential but by this definition I would just say that the majority of your food in volume comes from plant sources. I also agree on the issues with industrialised food which is why I buy all my meat from a local butcher and my eggs are from a neighbour. I think context matters a lot here. I could be vegan but only eat cereal with almond milk and Oreos, that doesn’t make you healthy but it does qualify as vegan. I don’t think the same broad strokes apply to people who want to eat meat either. Not everyone eats copious amounts of processed meat from McDonalds, KFC etc. Quality, sourcing and context is hugely important :)
@connoredick1610
@connoredick1610 7 жыл бұрын
yep context is key. And having people out there who support responsibly produced animal products is also important, because the whole world isn't about to go 100% plant based and there is more than one way to make a positive change. It's just difficult because very few people are in a position, financially or otherwise, to include these products in their everyday diet. I think that anyone giving nutrition advice or promoting a certain way of eating should be cognisant of this when working with clients or even just communicating to a large audience.

Great videos Tom, i stumbled on your channel a few weeks back and i'm really wanting to start looking at my flexibility (which at the moment is pretty much 0 as you mentioned you were a few years ago). Starting from the very begining of flexibility training, what kinds of progressions would you recommend for some of the staple stretches (in terms of time for holding the stretch initially, then what to aim for to progress etc.)? Thanks!

John Mitchell skinner I personally find myself feeling and performing best on a slightly lower carb and higher fat approach. The numbers make more sense as a percentage which is roughly 20:30:50 protein, carb and fat. It does depend on individual variance though :)

I've always wondered. How do people, including you, train for flexibility while being sore from previous mobility work? Not even limbering up is much effective while you are sore. Maybe you built it up always avoiding DOMS?
@BodyweightWarrior

I very rarely am sore from mobility work, only occasionally on heavy split days. Like strength training you build up a tolerance to it :)

Tom Merrick Yeah, you've already said that. As I remember, you used to stretch for a year with no results, and then after you found out the right methods, the things started working out. Do you think that period actually prepared you for what you are doing now? Talking about mobility training

University is right for some and not for others. You need to look at the different pathways which will get you to the job you want to do.

I think uni is an awesome experience as it exposes you to such a wide variety of ideas. However, I wouldn't recommend going for the sake of going. If I had my time again I would only go if I knew it would either greatly help or be essential for what I wanted to do in the future. That's just my opinion though :)

There are plenty of vegan sources of omega 3 like from flax, walnuts, chia seed and contrary to popular belief the body actually can actually convert the ALA from those sources to EPA and DHA in sufficient amounts and efficiently. Eating a half an avocado worth of whole food plant based fat per day is enough to help the body absorb those fat soluble vitamins. And the consumption of eggs in terms of atherogensis using empirical data is comparable to the consumption of cigarettes though obviously eggs won't cause lung damage. Love your videos man. Keep it up!

chikkmagneet people who think they eat healthy probably won’t listen. People who have little idea about nutrition to start with and then become interested in it will look at the science and realise there is only one to go and that’s WFPB.
@BodyweightWarrior
@BodyweightWarrior 7 жыл бұрын
chikkmagneet ALA converts at a rate of 42:1 to DHA and EPA. Most plant based sources of ALA also come with a bunch of omega 6 fatty acids so it doesn’t really help the balance
@chikkmagneet
@chikkmagneet 7 жыл бұрын
Tom Merrick ALA converts average at 4% actually. And most meat products are the true omega 6 sources that mess up the balance. 2 tbsp of flax seed has 5000 mg of ALA which would convert to roughly 200 mg. That's more the half the daily requirement in literally 2 tbsp.

Derek Sleater unfortunately he’s very dismissive of a WFPB diet. Anyone who eats processed meat (a class 1a carcinogen) and eggs as part of a “healthy” diet has a looooong way to go.

Hi Tom, thank you for your time to reply and edit, I feel maybe you could reflect on your original comment and open yourself up to the possibility of a Plant based diet, you obviously are very accomplished and maybe with a bit of investigation you could go that extra mile, I would recommend nutritionalfact.org and Dr Greger's you tube videos. But also well done on spreading the fitness message, not a lot of channels discuss all the components of fitness, so kudos where kudos due.

Ive tried veganism in the past but it doesn’t suit me. I had literally zero energy when I was doing it. Im not dismissive of being plant based, in fact I have a few clients that I prescribed close to a vegan diet because that is what suited their needs best. I would consider myself a plant based carnivore. No one can deny the benefits of eating a vegetables but depending on your individual requirements there is a lot of benefits to eating decent quality animal produce. There is also a lot of cherry picking when it comes to scientific literature with veganism and a habit of ignoring evidence that lies outside the framework. Admittedly this is the same for most “diets”, you can always find 10 papers supporting but also 10 disproving your point. I don’t try in these videos to tell you what to eat but I do invite you to be open and experiment with what works for you :)
