The Launcher racks use exploding impulse cartridge's (Navy calls them CADs) to generate a large amount of Gas pressure to literally PUSH the missile away from the jet. They are extremely POWERFUL using the force of nearly 4000-5000psi. The AIM-9 shots you are seeing are different, they have holdback devices that hold onto the missile until a certain force of thrust is built up. The launchers that "eject" the -120's and old AIM-7s work through a system of hook like devices that grab onto the missile and then a pair of ejectors that not only sway the missile (hold it still) but then SHOVE the missile off the jet. The latest generation of these from the "Harris" company are powered by compressed air, which makes them really easy to work with/on and simple to use (these being on the F-22/F-35) and also the BRU-61 for the SDB's uses the pneumatic system.

As a load toad i got to work the 22 for a year (now I am on the 16). The F-22 uses what is called an AVEL (AMRAAM Vertical Ejection Launcher) for the 120s in the main bays. It uses a mix of nitrogen and hydro to operate and launches the missile out of the bay at an extremely fast rate. The side bays are only hydraulically powered only but still operate just as fast. It is very impressive to see this in action in person.

Regarding AIM-54 the plane must be leveled because the detachment process is simply a little explosion to release the buckles and let the Phoenix be dropped by gravity until its rockets turn on. (There's only the release not any "push" as I heard directly from an F-14A pilot)

Missiles on the LAU-128/129 are mechanically restrained by the forward detent. The mechanical restraint is, however, electrically disengaged but the force of the missile's propulsion has to override the mechanical force to disengage the forward detent. Once achieved, it does then slide forward on, using it as a track to propel itself off the rail.

So are they blank shotgun cartridges? I have heard they may well be. Would love to know and if they are, what a great piece of off-the-shelf engineering!

Practically yes. Those "blanks" are most reliable way to detach any weapon or store. Even normal bomb rack units use that kind of system.

@@aleksimakela6787 so... 12 gauge or something? I imagine the military insists on special labeling and a separate purchase stream even if they're right out of the same factory.

The cartridges are not 12 gauge or shotgun carts , they are of an aluminium body & electric initiated they vary in width and length depending on the type of ejector release unit , the fill is made up of a tube style of low explosive .

@@unclejoeoakland as @Barry ang just said they're of different construction. I was being a bit unclear, since from the point of view of off-the-shelf engineering they are different. Some engines like the one of British Field Marshall tractor accept shotgun blanks.

@heeder7773 жыл бұрын
The wing tanks have a swivel that holds in the back of the tank pylon. As the tank unlocks when the carts fire the aft part of the pylon stays attached until the tank goes nose down then the tank will fall away. Upside down it would most likely stay there until positive G or gravity causes the nose to drop far enough to disengage.
