As someone who was attached to 7th SFG one two occasions (Korea and Afghanistan) and was also attached to a small TF run by a Seal team, I can say I was impressed by them all. However, I saw the effects of the SF guys having been through training where you can be “peered out” by being an asshole. Rangers and SF can go through the training and vote other guys out based on if they treat the others like shit or generally just don’t work well with others. It doesn’t happen often but it keeps guys from becoming jerks. To this day I’m still friends with a few SF guys despite not being SF myself. I did come across quite a few Seals and more than a few Marinea who were dickheads. But I never encountered a SF guy who gave anyone a problem.
@Keepgoing99199 ай бұрын
@@americandissident9062I think honestly SF requires a bit more schooling and education. Their mission set is a little more philanthropic and tends to require and attract people with better motives. SEALs just want to kick in doors and blow shit up.
@fredred50379 ай бұрын
I guess another thing is that SF and Rangers don’t have a “rockstar” appeal to it. It’s just another job in the military, a cooler one but still within it. Seals look at themselves as an autonomous fraternity more so than a unit under the DOD. The marketing for recruiting is attracting the wrong personalities
@ce66549 ай бұрын
@fredred5037 something about Army and Marine Corps special units is that most are drawn from the ranks of the infantry or have to undergo the training before ascending the pipeline. The infantry, especially airborne or LRSC units have some incredible guys there who aren't even in special operations, so there's a goid pool to pick from. In the SEAL community, they draw strictly from feeder MOS that usually join with the intention of becoming a SEAL. There's no appreciation for being on the bottom as a private in the 82nd or the USMC. You ascend and are now considered the most elite of warriors.

I met Pat Tillman in 1998 at The Vet before an Eagles game. I was there to collect toys for Toys For Tots with 20-25 other Marines in our blues and our Corpsman in his blues. Of course, we were very early. It was drizzling and cold so to staff at The Vet let us in. He was a class act. Our Corpsman went to ASU when Pat and Jake Plummer were there. Doc saw Jake warming up and called over to him and Jake saw the crowd of us and ran to the locker room. Doc then saw Pat warming up with a teammate and called over to him. Pat and his teammate ran over to us. He introduced himself and shook all of our hands, he was very interested in us, why we enlisted, and how we liked being in the service. You know how kids look when meeting a professional athlete? That's how he looked while talking to us. He was a really nice guy. I'll never forget the time I met him.

I was an infantry Marine for 8 years from 2001-2009. Did three combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. We took great pride in being professionals and living up to the great history and honoring the traditions of the Marines that came before us. I really enjoy the way that you are teaching the importance of accountability. During the after action reports of every mission we talked about the positives for about a minute. The mistakes were always the longest part of the debrief even if they were just the smallest attention to detail. Only focusing on what was successful is going to give people that don’t understand the military a false impression of how things actually operate. Many situations that have ended in tragic results never address the failures that lead up to situations completely breaking down. I completely agree with what you are saying. Thank you for your service I always enjoy listening to other veterans talk about the experience they had.

In addition, regarding John Chapman and Neil Robert's death on the mountain DEVGRU Ops Officer Syzmanski ordered the helo insertion on the X, despite daylight and despite Delta's success in their recce missions already in place after foot infiltration days prior. Pete Blaber who commanded these Delta AFOs advised Gen Trebon against the Seals joining late but he was shut down. He talks about this in "Men, Mission and Me". Slab followed orders from DEVGRU and the rest is history and the greatest heroism by Chappie. As documented, DEVGRU led the fight for Slab's MOH and stiffled Chappies process by the AFSOC.

I've heard interviews that showed where Seals were told to tow the line or else by the command. And judging by the higher-up leadership and the actions and words of the joint chief I can believe that. They should be held accountable for not just the bs with the seals but more importantly, the withdrawal from Afghanistan. I can't believe that they are not all in prison along with the Biden administration. I'm not a Democrat or Republican nor a Trump or Biden fan. Frankly, they both are an embarrassment to our country.

The official government story is inconsistent. If Bin Laden was killed at Abbottabad it was likely a permissive ingress. Also disposal of Bin Laden's body was witnessed by no one on the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier who is willing to say so. The story of a hostile ingress into Pakistan, and being chased by the Pak air force on the way out is not consistent with a US aircraft flying over Pakistan the next day on the way to the Carl Vinson in the Indian Ocean.

He addressed that in an interview and then I also saw another interview where another SEAL stated that if they don't like a guy because he's not popular or doesn't join in socially much with the rest of the team, they tend to single him out and turn their back on him. He also suggested that it seems some don't like when someone like Mr. Ballen gets very popular and successful after leaving the teams. Instead of being supportive and having their back. Mr. Ballen admitted he was never really a drinker and I think maybe that had something to do with the lack of socializing with his team, which many may already be aware drinking together is just part of the culture, when they are not training or getting ready for a mission. 🤔 Unless they literally DID beat him with a broomstick? Which I would not be that surprised about. Worse things have happened within the teams (or so I've heard).

I am all about band of Brothers. I completely understand however, I also know that you never leave someone behind. It’s damaging to unit morale and also has the effect I’m not making people want to fight. The same thing with saving someone from a very bad, sucking chest wound, helping them within the golden hour. If marines, sailors, airman, or soldiers know that their brothers will be there regardless then they will all fight with happy hearts. But now it seems that the military is nothing more than crabs in a bucket, and that’s because the genie of the sign of professional was led out of the bottle. There’s so much that I would like to say

Jay, you have my respect for covering this subject. It's a touchy subject with most Americans. I remember the messed up photoshop image of dead Bin Laden on the news when this was happening. In the book, they said Bin Ladens head was cracked in half and they had to mush it back together to take conformation pictures. It didn't make sense. The whole burial at sea to keep him from being a martyr? my Muslim friends said that's the most ridiculous thing they've ever heard. Just lots of weird shit
@danielgawelczyk46959 ай бұрын
It’s because Osama bin Laden had been dead for years and the Corrupt Barry Sotoro aka Barack Obama administration needed a win so they faked bin Ladens death. There was a Pakistani parliament member, who was a woman that gave an interview for the news saying bin Laden had died a few years earlier from complications from diabetes. She was found deceased a week later. The Whole World Is A Stage…

After every mission that includes raids, ambushes, reconnaissance, hostage rescue etc the Team conducts an immediate Hotwash/debrief. Each member openly contributes to it and discusses their part and even tells if they failed or that they need improvement on their TTPs. Killing or capturing UBL was the main target and the singular focus/decisive action of this mission. The DEVGRU Squadron/Team would have confirmed this during the hotwash and O'Neill would have claimed then that he killed UBL, period. Great podcast and keep up this important investigation!!

Thanks Matt, I am though troubled by why there are versions, plural, as to who made the actual kill shot on OBL, add to that why supposedly the Navy nominated O’Neill to play the role of the hero who shot OBL, consider this fact, all of the MOH awards and the facts designating who actually took part in recognizing these brave men who became Medal of Honor recipients, since Audie Murphy, leading up to present day, the facts here as to what EXACTLY happened in getting OBL, is amazing as to the versions and confusion in the reporting of this great US Military tactic, and the annoying part that O’Neill took such great satisfaction in taking the credit for being the guy, apparently he has an ego that overrides his conscience! I am a Vietnam veteran and I find this explanation of the take down of OBL to be very disturbing!!!

While I don't believe Rib O’Neal for a hot second, this man is very emotionally vested. I'm surprised to hear him call out Jocko and Lutrell - he never did say why he was calling out Jocko. I think that the answer lies with who ever was in the command and higher up. I wanna know the truth behind Pat Tillman. I'm sure his family does also. It sucks that instead of being honest to a point and sharing what they can about the other side of all these incidents. I never would've thought that behind every story was 2 sides regarding the GWOT
@brianb7388Ай бұрын
Pat Tilman and some rangers fired on some other rangers from their own unit and the return fire killed Pat Tilman. There some evidence that Tilman actually realized they were in blue on blue and he exposed himself to tell his guys to stop firing and that's how he got killed. The military doesn't like to advertise it but about 20% of everyone who dies in combat is killed by friendly fire. It's bad for recruiting so it's not widely advertised. It's pretty much always been that way and the army stared looking at it as far back as the civil war. No one wants the negative PR hit of losing a NFL player who sacrificed to fight for the country so the army tried to hide the reality but it's not the huge scandal people pretend it is. Much bigger scandal that the green berets in mali repeatedly tried to tell their command that they should not launch the attack and yet they were ordered to go in and wound up ambushed. Then when one guy was put up for a MoH they downgraded it to a silver star because the medal of honor investigation likely would have exposed more of the details of what a mess that operation actually was. the irony that this green beret repeatedly whines about the medal of honor on roberts ridge as "celebrating failure" but ignores the medals the green berets got for "celebrating failure" and half the unit driving away from where the other half was killed and then again driving away from the last guy in a separate vehicle who was also killed is pretty spectacular. Combat isn't neat and clean and bad things happen. The reason the term is 'fog of war" is because NO ONE ever understands the full picture. It's high stress and high adrenaline and people never get the details correct in an after action report.
@3floyd3689 ай бұрын
Rob mentioned Amal being shot in the leg when he entered the room in his book many years ago. Matt claims Red pushed the two girls back when he first entered Bin Laden's bedroom. Rob has it happening in the hallway. Matt's version seems improbable as it would require a guy walking into the room to clear it, but immediately dropping his weapon instead. Surely that isnt the standard protocol for Tier 1 operators. And lastly, the physical evidence simply doesn't support Red being the shooter. There was a tight cluster of bullet holes in a wall and blood on the ceiling near the bed in Bin Laden's bedroom. That supports Rob's version and couldn't have happened by Red shooting from the stairs or hallway. In addition, according to the account of Bin Laden's daughter, Sumaiya, in the Abbottobad Commission report in 2013, his face was recognizable. She didn't see him get shot, but she was forced to confirm the body was him. She describes a forehead shot with blood flowing backwards and a clearly recognizable face, although admittedly she does say it was a bit dark. This goes against the story saying Rob was #4 and canoed him, making him unrecognizable. Also, remember that Red told Rob afterwards that he should give the CIA lady something since he was the shooter, and he suggested Rob's magazine with 27/30 bullets left.

all these arm chair investigators thinking everyone has the same story after the fact is gross. anyone who has ever been in combat know that you don't see half of what happens and everyone has a different version afterwards. it's not until everyone talks about it together that they influence each others stories and they wind up with similar memories. if you took everyone from a SEAL team and had them write down their perceptions after a firefight without any discussion you would have as many stories as guys and none of them would exactly match. that's just reality. this might even be 2-3 guys with different stories who all truly believe their story is correct.
