I have a 2015 Porsche Macan S, bought new almost 10 years ago. The manufacturing quality of the vehicle is excellent, and the driving experience is very satisfying. I am now getting near to when major components will need replacing, not just maintaining. I am ok with that, as Zack says, the most economical vehicle you can own is the one you currently have. I do not want to spend $110,000 CDN for a new Macan S, and I don't want to buy a cheaper new vehicle. I will just keep my Macan S for maybe another 10 years, and replace parts, and maintain the car. No need for a new vehicle. As I am approaching 70, this car will probably see me out to the end of my driving tenure. Love your show.

electromagnetic rust prevention does not work unless the metal is submerged in a conducting material. I have actually removed a unit with rust right at the points where it was connected to the body of the car. I use Penetroil from Ziebart and have it reapplied annually, and so far so good

Cathodic protection is a thing, but I don't think it can work on a vehicle.
@louism82172 ай бұрын
@alsheremeta it doesn't. It works on ships, in salt water because salt water conducts the current around the hull. It also takes a bigger current than those things produce. The zinc in the galvanized metal does a better job, at least until the zinc corrodes away.

Whenever i see the question forester vs outback i will say that i would have bought a forester if it had the turbo. The visibility on a forester is a bit better and you sit a little higher in the seat vs the outback. But driving the non turbo is like driving a lawn mower. The turbo is just smoother and more fun to drive. Hopefully when they bring the hybrid coming to forester next year it will get a bit of an hp bump and make it a better drive.

Electronic rust devices cannot possibly work because there are too many disparate components in a car. Once the electrons start moving that cause "rust", it is too late to stop that chemical process. You can slow it down with the suggested Krown or Rust Check applications, but that is all you can do. My 16 year old Canadian wintered Ford Ranger is testament to the effectiveness of Krown and I do all my vehicles. It makes it dirty down under the car and because it continues to creep, you may need to wipe it off surfaces that you might come in contact with. But that is it.

Wow. Usually enjoy your reviews but in my opinion the segment with the CR RANTS was way off base. Especially with the comment JD Powers is better. (their 2024 Initial Quality Study has Ram as Number 1 and Dodge as last - same manufacture, both with limited new products - that makes sense NOT!). CR attempts to predict new car reliability of new models based on the changes made the vehicle for the model year and their info on that brands overall reliability. Sometimes they get it wrong, as their readers provide feedback and the assessments are updated. (You have even mentioned that you probably should not buy the first year of a model change). I'm just glad that there is publication with actual Automotive ENGINEERS doing the testing, real time feedback from their members and is not dependent on advertising to survive.

@GrizzledNoob2 ай бұрын
It's also ignorant to not understand that many people do not have easy access to charging for an EV. Apartment living really limits those options. In addition there are so many unknowns about the batteries and reliability and safety and the technology it's very obvious why people are hesitant to consider electric. Hopefully that helps you understand what you for some reason found to be so absurd.
@easternyellowjacket2762 ай бұрын

Consumers Reports is a joke. I'm old enough to remember when the Dodge Neon, Plymouth Neon and Chrysler Neon all had noticeably different ratings in Consumers Reports even though all three were the same vehicle. They couldn't explain it so what did CR do? Just marked them all the same starting with the next auto issue! The real answer is CR didn't want subscribers to know there was THAT much leeway in the way people mark their responses which in effect made their scores worthless. Don't even get me started on how they rated every new vehicle of a certain import brand as recommended based on past performance yet didn't automatically rate other manufacturers vehicles recommended even if they were just as reliable. Total bias even through they're shoveling it down your throat that they are unbiased and scientific. Look at their Corvette ratings. It's been many years since I bothered to glance at a CR issue so don't know if this is still true or has chanced, but average or maybe a bit better than average reliability at best yet owners LOVE them. Absolutely LOVE them according to CR themselves. So how can a vehicle rated less reliable than something else have more satisfied owners than the more reliable one? Does anyone think a Jeep Wrangler owner cares about CR's rating or do they just want to get the roof and doors off and head to the beach or an offroad trail or something? Do you think that person cares one bit that a CRV would be more reliable and get better fuel economy? Absolutely not. And then their what makes a better pet issue - cats or dogs? Like tell a dog person a cat is a better pet or vice versa, tell a cat person a dog would be better. CR in all their flawed scoring and rating and recommending have replaced an individuals decision and preference and served up boring scores and ratings of solid or hollow dots.
