I had my car in for new tires, when I picked up the car, they charged me $10 a tire for nitrogen. I told them I didn’t ask for it, they advised I had to tell them I didn’t want it. That was 10 years ago……I never went back….they lost my business for all our cars forever

In 98 I bought a new Tahoe, at 2,000 miles the check engine light came on. It was the gas cap not screwed on and since I lived in NJ I didn’t fuel my car, the point is they charged me $30.00. I suggested they waive that since I just paid 35K for the vehicle but they didn’t. I wrote the owner a letter and he didn’t reply and I never returned to that dealership for anything. I purchase 10 new cars since then.

Consider this: The air all around us is 80+% N2. The rest is mostly O2. How much do you think putting in a few psi of "air" every few months is going to change the %N2 in your tires? NEGLIGABLE! If you are losing so much gas from a tire that you need to pump them back up frequently, then you've got a bigger problem than diluting the N2. Keeping 100% N2 in your tires is more for racing applications where you want the least amount of pressure change during a race. For domestic use tires? Gimme a break!!! You just got conned.

I'd like to call out the editing of the videos on this channel. Even though the entire QCC segment is essentially just a long two-shot, I love how you go out of your way to find the right supporting video footage to support the conversation. For instance, showing the legroom on the i4...it's just a short clip, but I'd guess it takes more than a few seconds to find the footage, clip it, and drop it into the QCC segment. And you have multiple edits like this on every episode. I know this is like Video 101, but you take the trouble to do these things the right way and I appreciate it!

You helped me recall a memory right at the end. We lived in Swift Current, Saskatchewan for a couple of years. (I was a Principal's Assistant there.) One winter morning, a fellow lady teacher had started her VW Beetle. The engine would absolutely roar. (There was something wrong with the throttle cable.) She got out of her car and came over to me as I scraped off the windows. She asked me, "Ron, do you think my engine is racing?" I told her to shut off her engine. . . . the throttle cable was frozen with the throttle cable frozen wide open. She was a French teacher and she had a cute accent.

Nitrogen still has to obey the gas laws and they indicate that a gas will expand when heated and/or increase its pressure. When volume constrained by the tire, the pressure will increase when heated. Nitrogen is relatively inert though and won't react with the rubber and doesn't contain any water vapour to condense.

Dry Air is comprised of 78% Nitrogen, 20.95% Oxygen, 0.93% Argon and 0.04% Other gases. The largest variable in compressed air is Moisture Content which is the reason commercial air compressors are equipped with desiccants to remove moisture. Compressed Nitrogen gas contains virtually no water vapour. Zack is correct... unless you're running your vehicle on a track, you don't need pure nitrogen in your tires. You should however purchase a good tire pressure gauge and use it frequently... especially in the early Spring & late Fall with large variations in ambient outside air temperatures.

Nitrogen (that dealers pump into tires) is 95% N. The remaining 5% is O2, Ar, and other trace gases. Besides track use, the 2nd reason to get Nitrogen is for owners who do not check their tires' pressures. My experience is that my Miata's tire pressures did not change even after 5 months (when dealer used N for my daily use tires). And Nitrogen was not extra. I use to track and I check pressures every month.
@Mountain-Man-3000
@Mountain-Man-3000 4 ай бұрын
The problem is they aren't putting pure nitrogen in the tires at all. They are just using a special filter dryer on the regular compressed air that removes as much moisture as possible. It's a total waste of time for everyone involved.

Andrea and Zak are legends! On the warming up the car.... I largely agree with what you said, to a point. We live in Alberta. It gest below -20, -30, and sometimes to -40. The engine takes probably a minute to come down off of the high idle and another minute before it sounds like it's running normally at all in those conditions. You need a little more warm up in that extreme cold than the time to put your belt on. Do yourself a favour: there are plenty of videos on KZbin done with scientific approaches to test synthetic oils in -40 conditions. The thin oils like 0W-20 should be the best in those condtions. Guess what?! They pour in a big, soft, solid block at -35 or -40. Bearing wear will 100% be worse driving the engine before it has at least a couple minutes to idle in those conditions.

Really enjoyed this one. Keep in mind EV’s are not necessarily expensive because of their low operating costs. It’s all about total cost of ownership- think doing a Costco run that you spend lots of money vs multiple cheaper corner store runs. In the end, the Costco run is more cost effective as long as the food doesn’t go bad by the time you use it. Translation: if you keep your vehicles for a long time, EVs tend to be more cost effective

I don't warm up too long, about a minute, then I just go nice a slow until my RPMs go down below 2K while driving 30mpg. Once it goes down to 1.5K RPMs or less, the engine is warm. A warmer engine doesn't need to work as hard to get you up to speed and keep it there. Great video as always!

The last quesion: I have a 2020 Subaru Forester, having it commute on highway daily for 2 years in Alberta winter, no issues. However recently got a job much closer to where I live, hugh difference if I don't wait for its colant low temp light to go away. If I don't wait, the first traeffic light it shakes noticbly, and carbon build up was so obvious during cold starts it rumbles, had to clean upper cylinder with chemical then it goes away. Compare to if I wait for it 5 mins, low colant temp light goes away, no shaking, much less carbon build up. Warming up is necessary in my experience. Honda's 1.5T oil dilution problem, officially they answer the same thing, had to warm it up, then they standard remote start on CVT models. I still believe in warming it up, personnal experience here.

My 2001 E38 SWB (with literally EVERY single (less the V12!) option incl. TV, Sound system upgrade, Comfort pkg, leather upgrade, M-Sport pkg (skirts, staggered tyres, twin performance exhaust) and painted in a very rare (bespoke) M5 colour) will forever be my favourite motorcar (owned from 147 km -> 289 kms). Worth the occasional financial headaches?? … Absolutely! (though not always convenient). Though now, especially thinking back… these days, I’d probably go with a Lexus GS 350 AWD with the ‘Ultimate pkg’ (18-way seats, HUD, Mark Levinson Sound System). I’d avoid GS V8 option and would be a little concerned with the potential maintenance issues on the LS (especially the LS 600h - V8 + hybrid) with it’s lacklustre drive/handling/brakes and styling (size too?). Thanks for the video.

Agreed, you can start your ICE and drive away, but drive moderately until it warms up . Going back 50 years to when emissions weren’t an issue, the Volvo owner’s manual said “you can move your vehicle once the temperature gauge starts to move” :^]

OK, so Nitrogen tires…I have a 2022 Vespa GTS and I was always adding air to the tires. I knew about the difference between air and nitrogen. Tire Kingdom not far from my home had Nitrogen and it was not so expensive. I did it and the tech, being a great guy, explained that I had to get it topped of a few more times before the benefit. Two of my scooter friends had decided to take the plunge as well. AFTER 4 top offs it’s worth it for sure. We were topping the tires off way too much at least every other ride and we ride a lot. Now after about 8 months I have to say yes for my Vespa and haven’t done it yet on my two trucks, maybe will not sure yet. FYI we had really hot temps here last summer (New Orleans area) and what we would call cold in the 30s for about a week. 3 different scooters, two vespas and a genuine urbano…..Good so far, no real drops in pressure for sure……love your show, thanks Gray

If it's really cold out, WARM UP YOUR DAMNED ENGINE BEFORE DRIVING. The engineers aren't thinking holistically about the situation. They're focusing only on emissions and oil pressure, which is BS. So firstly, the heater in the car is responsible for keeping the windows clear. If you start breathing moisture onto that frozen glass you will not be able to see which is kinda important. As for engine wear, the damage that can be done to an engine put under load right after startup is immense. If your engine is frozen at -20 and you drive off immediately the clearance between parts is excessive. This is not an issue when it's sitting at idle with no load, but if you drive off and push the throttle even a little bit too hard, you will cause damage. Also, don't forget there is also a transmission attached to that engine. It doesn't get nearly as hot as an engine, and the few minutes of run time before being put under load can really help get that fluid the correct operating temperature. The engineers asked about this DO NOT CARE if your engine is worn out after 100k km, because they consider a car with that many km junk anyways. And automakers just want to sell you a new car when your engine packs up. There are reasons why for a long time the advice was to pre-warm your car, and there are no GOOD reasons why that advice has suddenly changed. Really sick of non-technical people just parroting what a bought and paid for engineer says is the truth without asking any other experts.

I use nitrogen as it's free at Costco, which is where I bought my tires. Plus, it's easy to get topped up at Costco. Just drive up to the tire bay, and they do it right away. As far as free air goes, the gas stations I use all charge a loonie or toonie to fill your tires, or, they don't even have an air pump. Like they don't already make enough off of us already with the outrageous gas prices in North Vancouver - consistently the highest in North America!

I'll wait for the upcoming Mazda hybrids, which will be using the Toyota hybrid system (& even a Toyota engine from what I have read), since most Honda & Toyota styling/design (& attention to certain details) is lacking these days IMO. The latest Prius looks good (if not a bit impractical), but looks neutered in the rear since Toyota is trying to hide its ICE exhaust system DNA instead of going with a sporty exhaust setup with nice SS rounded tips (like Mazda does so well compared to Toyota or Honda ICE vehicles).

I was somewhat interested in the CRV hybrid till the dealership here wants to charge me $500 for air in the tires. I was interested in the Rav 4 till they said its $5000 over sticker, not including the 1000 for door edging, 1000 for tint, 2000 for some car locater, 5000 for extended warranty, 3000 for paint protection, 1000 for glass fusion protection, and I would have to wait 2 years in which the car is no longer relevant to be "new". Or I can pay $25,000 for them to boot off the next person in line and I can take their spot. And what does Toyota do to stop this.? Absolutely, positively unequivocally, nothing. Honda of Clear Lake is no better. Big Star Hyundai/Kia is even worse

I feel like the all suvs have gotten a bit bigger now and these have very similar dimensions to the older Sorento. But looking at them, they do seem to be a little smaller somehow. I've only seen the Crv fully in person. Cubic feet doesn't seem to tell the whole story.

Hi, I am kind of torn between getting a 2024 civic hatchback or a used Q5 Teknik top trim to 30k with 94km. Any thought on which is a better option? 😅

Air contains moisture, moisture is bad for electronics like tire air pressure monitors. Nitrogen doesn’t contain moisture.

Engineer after engineer has firmly stated that warming up an engine will give it a longer life. The engine in my car revs at 1200 to 1300 RPM's for about 60 seconds, then the RPM's drop to 1000 when it's finished. Those factory engineers also said that because a turbo can turn at up to 25,000 RPM's this warm up is very important strictly from a lubrication point of view.

My understanding, which could be wrong, is that the advantage of nitrogen in the tires was not because nitrogen was special but because it was pure, dry nitrogen, with no water vapor. Unlike nitrogen, water vapor can condense into a liquid (or vice versa) at normal temperatures and pressures, causing more pressure variation. So, it's the dryness, not the nitrogen that makes a difference. Dry air would have the same advantage.

Paying extra for "Nitrogen" is a waste of money. First of all, tire shops aren't buying cylinders of pure nitrogen to put in tires. They just use a filter dryer on the regular compressed air to remove there moisture from the air. It's still just air which does indeed contain nitrogen.
