Quick and Easy! Bearing Race Removal in 3 minutes!

This is a quick overview on how to remove the bearing race in a hub when changing out your wheel bearings.
I have created this page to share information with the hopes of helping you become a better fisherman and catch more fish. I do this with the heart of a teacher in mind while trying to make it simple and fun for anyone!

First time changing bearings. I had the right idea, just wasn't using enough force because I didn't want to damage anything. Big punch and hammer instead of a mallet did the trick. Thanks for the video.

Invest in some drifts. Preferably brass ones so u can use them to reinstall the race without damaging them.

watched 2 seconds just as a refresher. You can always tell a persons skill level by using the incorrect tool for the job. Ive never used a breaker bar or ratchet as a punch......

Use a 1/2 drive 6" extension for a punch. Nice job, but a racer is a type of snake, or a fast driver....I believe they are called a race, as in a bearing race.

Officially a "cup" in tapered roller bearings. It is generally a separate PN from the "cone" (w/ rollers). A few are packaged as a cup & cone set, like Timken SET1, SET2, ... (National A1, A2, A3, ...). You don't need to source bearings from an auto manufacturer, just search for the PN's. I found that when needing an internal bearing for a transmission, which would cost $65 as an auto part with 3 wk delay. Found it was the same PN's as used on many trailer axles so bought the priciest one at a local trailer supply for $6. I used to tap the cups out of a wheel hub with a blunt screwdriver, but a tool which keeps it perpendicular is best. In one transmission, they weren't nice enough to have rear slots to get a punch on the cup, so had to cut it out with a carbide end mill until it cracked. Insure you orient the new cup correctly before knocking in or you will be in deep.

Would have been good to mention that when inserting the new races that its best to use a bearing driver kit so as to not cause any damage to them, they're relatively cheap.

That is not concrete, those are bricks! Hammering metal against red brick will easily chip or crack a brick. Concrete would stand a better chance. Race or races, not "racers".
