When holding them is the side where they HAVE the right neck supposed to lay on your arm or the opposite side?
@judywangptdptpcs39415 жыл бұрын
Hi Laila. When holding babies with torticollis, their tight side is supposed to be stretched. So their tight side needs to go on your arm. Hope that helps!

Can I do this with my baby if he has a tendency to position his head towards the right instead of the left?
@judywangptdptpcs39413 жыл бұрын
Hello! If your baby tends to turn his head to the right then you should do the opposite exercises than what is shown here. However, because some babies turn to the right and also tilts to the right, a more in depth in person PT eval will be important to make sure all the exercises still apply. Thanks for the question!

What’s the window to fix torticollis? My baby is 11 months.
@judywangptdptpcs39413 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for the great question! So torticollis is actually a cyclical diagnosis, meaning that it comes back every so often, usually when the baby learns a new gross motor skill and goes through a growth spurt. PTs usually work with babies until at least when the baby is walking (sometimes up until 18months old) to make sure the head stays midline and neck strength stays balanced even when upright. It is good to get updated exercises as your baby grows. Hope that helps!

My baby have click sound in the neck is that becouse of muscle spasm ?becouse his neck muscles are tight
@judywangptdptpcs39414 жыл бұрын
I am sorry you are having to deal with the stress of this. It definitely sounds like you should bring up your concerns with your pediatrician to get referred to the appropriate specialist. Special tests and imaging may need to be done to rule out other reasons for clicking in the neck. It is definitely not a typical presentation of neck muscle tightness or spasms. good luck!

Hello! My 3 month old can only look to his left when lying down. When I am carrying him, he can only look to his right and not to his left, and has his head tilted making it more difficult to look around to his left. Which side torticollis does my child have? I would love to do these exercises for him, but I'd like to know which side torticollis he has before starting.
@judywangptdptpcs39413 жыл бұрын
Hello! I think it will definitely be beneficial to get him checked out in person by a pediatric PT. Sometimes torticollis does not present in the typical fashion so a baby may be tilted and turned the same way depending on which muscle is more impacted. Some babies also present with different side torticollis when in a gravity dependent position vs a gravity lessened one depending on their age so an in person evaluation would be more individualized. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful! Good luck!

@floral hirra I took my baby to a Pediatric PT and said that they have Atypical Left Sided Torticollis. Since my baby only looked to the left and also tilted their head to the left it was diagnosed as Atypical. Also, as my baby started to sit up, they would only look to the right and tilt their head to the left. So when he would lay down he would only look to the left and tilt his head to the left, and while sitting up he would only look to the right and tilt his head to the left. I think you should also take your baby to a Pediatric PT to check exactly what they have because I was so confused at first and while waiting for my doctor to refer us to a PT I was doing the wrong side stretches.
@angelacorrea61412 жыл бұрын
@floral hirra @floral hirra My child is now 1 year and 6 months, he can now look left and right. He still has a little bit of a left sided tilt (10 degree tilt), but his PT says some kids just have that little tilt that is stubborn and we just have to continue stretching their neck. But his tilt is way better compared to when he could not even lift his head at all. His PT has me do left sided stretches and right sided stretches at least 6-7 times a day. Since he would only look to his left while lying down, I would have to make him look to his right and since he would tilt to his head to the left I would have to stretch out the left side of his neck. When he would sit up or was on his tummy and only look to the right, I would have to get him to look to his left (looking at a toy or anything that interests him). Just being consistent with stretching and incorporating it to their daily activities helps a lot.

absolutely! babies are probably the most cooperative when they are asleep. :)

You could try but most kiddos older than 9mo would have a very hard time holding still and more active exercises would be more beneficial. Hope that helps!

Thank you for asking! Yes today he is a happy healthy 4yo. You might notice that a grown child who used to have torticollis as a baby may occasionally tilt to his tighter side when tired or sick or going through a growth spurt. This is very normal.

@judywangptdptpcs39413 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! Torticollis can be a cyclical condition so whenever the baby gains a new gross motor skill (such as sitting, crawling, and walking), muscle imbalances may come back as those muscles are put on stretch and in challenging positions again. Babies need updated exercises from physical therapists as they grow. Usually torticollis is not fully resolved until the baby is 12-18 months, or until after he starts walking independently.
@kosireddichandini99843 жыл бұрын
Thankyou for responding...I have a doubt that as per video baby with torticollis will not at all be able to turn his head and cannot sleep on side lying position...say for example if baby has left torticollis baby will not at all be able turn head to left is it so???theres lot of info in online but nothing is as precise as your video
@judywangptdptpcs39413 жыл бұрын
It is hard to make generalizing sweeping statements about a particular side of torticollis and how those muscles will respond over time to certain positions. It really depends on which muscle is more affected and how it is affected. If treated, babies can tolerate sidelying positions just fine. What you may find is that range of motion may be corrected before muscle weakness is fully resolved. both ROM and muscle weakness can affect the performance of that muscle to the specific side. Hope that helps!

My baby is three months old, she tends to look mostly to her left side all the time is this the stretches for her to do, meaning her right muscles are tight?
@leoangela48734 жыл бұрын
What happened to your sweet baby? I need to know the answer of your question also?
@judywangptdptpcs39414 жыл бұрын
So sorry about the late response! Yes. Usually when a baby prefers to look left it is the right sternocleidomastoid muscle that is tight so this is the exercise to do with her. But it is definitely best to have a physical therapist to evaluate her range and strength in a variety of positions to make sure it is in fact just a right sided tightness. Sometimes a left turn preference could be due to an unintergrated reflex or a vision issue depending on the baby. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Great question! This is a baby with right sided torticollis, so the right side of the neck is tight and the left side is overstretched. We are trying to stretch out the right side of the neck in the video.

My baby keeps getting tight again and again, spending 99% of the time in a tilt or a little bit of a tilt. I've being doing a full gamut of stretched and exercises since she was 6 weeks old. She's now 20 months with right torticollis and tortisoma. Her vision is great, not sandifers. Her PT thinks surgical release is too extreme. Her tilt is slight at this point and she's gained all milestones, even on time. Do you see this just go away eventually or does it end in facial and body scoliosis if we can't get ahead of this? I never hear long term consequences. The thing that gets me the most is when she looks upward at something, her neck looks shorter still on thr torticollis side so she's not looking straight up. Yet they say she isn't stuck.
@judywangptdptpcs3941 Жыл бұрын
thank you so much for reaching out and asking about the long term consequences. unfortunately, by the time a baby is 20 months and walking, residual torticollis becomes very hard to resolve and may always be present when 1)looking up, 2)when they are sick, 3)when they go through a growth spurt, 4) when they are upset, or 5) when they are learning a new physical skill or new skill that requires concentration. that is great that you have ruled out vision issues as contributing to her torticollis. your PT is correct, muscle release surgery would be extreme, especially if her range of motion is not limited. a lot of times residual asymmetry could be a strength issue (where the weak side need to continue to be strengthened and the tight side continues to add compensations during daily activities). I have had some success with therapeutic taping, use of the TOT collar, or splinting using neoprene wraps (which is aggressive and some PTs do not attempt). hopefully your PT has access to these resources? best of luck and rest assured that scoliosis is not typically a long term consequence of torticollis.

It's just crazy it has stuck around so long when I have stretched and exercised her every single day since a newborn. She had small periods of remission but it always comes right back. She has other compounding digestive problems that made her tighten up for a while but I always stretched it out. It really appears that any time she grows she goes right back into the tilt and some tightness. I just hope that as an adult this finally leaves us alone but it feels quite bleak to know it needs to be treated that long. I was told when she started crawling it would go away. Nope. Walking. Nope. All the symmetrical movements. Nope. This is a horrible congenital problem.
@judywangptdptpcs3941 Жыл бұрын
@@ericagriffin5261 I know. That sounds super frustrating. It does sound like you've put in a lot of good work to make sure it doesn't contribute to too many problems as an adult. she might just experience more muscle strain and tension on one side than the other. it would be good to teach her best ways to pay attention to her posture in the future. digestive issues when young can contribute. hang in there! I highly recommend kinesiotaping at this point.

Torticollis almost always need some sort of intervention, even if it is just repositioning/redirecting as opposed to aggressive stretching/exercises. It very much depends on the severity and involvement of the muscles as well as the age of onset.
