Thank you!! This is so helpful; painting en plein air is a whole new experience, and I’m still learning the basics of painting in general. I really appreciate how you explain and demonstrate these things in a simple and easy to understand manner!

Each step you show helps me to see and act more like a painter stead as a frustrated perfectionist❤

Perfection does not belong in the painting process. Try to substitute that attitude with look for potential. Make it a discovery adventure.

Hello, This one was very helpful and I especially liked the slow and steady process described. It can be intimidating when one is outdoors facing the huge vistas and weather deciding how to proceed. Thank you. Bobsie

Very helpful, and your sketch is lovely. I like the way your value lines to speed up color mixing, which I've been struggling with in plein air.

Wonderful tips! I paint Plein Air and my medium is watercolor. I use a Notan sketch for value patterns

Thank you so much for your tips over the years - they are very useful. I finally subscribed! A general question: You have a lot of paint around the edge of your palette. Is there a way you keep this from drying out, or do you just go through so much paint that it's not an issue?

Elvey, I answer that in Quick Tip 172. Thanks for subscribing!

Dianne, I have an important question (to me) about value areas in this demo. You mention that "lots of times" you would do shadow areas first, but here you are just blocking in the colors you see. Is it because we are in plein air and the sky area takes up most of the space so you start there? I would like to do this procedure even in the studio interpreting a photo or picture. If so -- notans not necessary?? Thank you for your time and clarification. Appreciatively, Carol.

Carol, this Tip was about going general to specific. Because of the time constraints of doing these Quick Tips, I didn't include doing the notan first. Notice that just past the 8-minute mark, I talk about the light value area and the shadow value area. That IS the notan area. Notan is a diagram pattern of light and shadow. When we find that, we can either set that pattern on the surface or honor it with the values of our colors.
