how would you do this on a tileable in designer?

You could use a similar workflow with position data as an input that drives a mask. We have a 3D gradient that takes position data. However, having a dirt gradient like this will break the tile. But that is Ok if you are using it as a parameter to show dirt on areas of a mesh that will not tile vertically.
