The villain did have a backstory, however, it wasn't explained in the movie. He only mentioned that killing dragons made him a hero in his village, so he decided to kill as many as he could. So he's not just evil, he was probably consumed with his thirst for praise; he wanted to become the hero. Also, he's very passionate about hunting, so the hunt to kill dragons became his life.
@kingjoon33815 жыл бұрын
Erika Ember - I also saw it as a parallel to hiccup. after trying so hard to protect the dragons, he finally meets his literal opposite. cause the other guy was kinda like hiccup, not popular, scrawny, an inventor and wanted praise. (killing night furys gave him what he wanted). like if hiccup ended up killing toothless when he first brought him down he would have turned into the villain, and now he has to face that kind of person himself. idk that's how I kinda took it
@mafuyu80885 жыл бұрын
True but still the movie did not develop or truly made you fear or feel for Grimmel. His backstory could have been developed more and he could have been much more of a parallel to Hiccup like for example Harry Potter and Voldermort. When it comes to Harry and Voldermort you truly understood how Voldermort came to be and Harry truly knows he could have ended like him. Instead Grimmel is kinda just there and is evil because yeah he killed a dragon so he is evil, he had a lot of potential but wasn't developed properly.

But then I thought about it more and really enjoyed the fact that there was a bad guy that didn’t have some tragic and sympathetic background. I liked Grimmel, and was really disappointed he wasn't expanded more upon too. He was the perfect foil to Hiccup, and Hiccup would've likely ended up like Grimmel if he had killed Toothless in the first film -- a viking who uses his intelligence and cunning to hunt dragons, instead of brawn and brute strength.
@gatto30305 жыл бұрын
Agree. His character design is weird lel but his back story and personality is one of the most interesting of all the three villains in the movies (not including the series though)
@SasukeUchiwa1045 жыл бұрын
I was disappointed with Grimmel. Unlike all the rest of the villains(even the ones in the tv series) he didn't have much of a backstory. He just killed dragons for sport because he was praised by everyone in his village for it. He didn't have a specific connection to dragons or any real motivation to get revenge on them. He just killed dragons because he felt like it. At least Drago had a reason to get revenge and try to control the dragons, his village was burned down by dragons. Also Grimmel was defeated way too easily. He was pushed off of the Lightfury and fell into the ocean, that's it. Drago had a big climatic battle and even ended up forcing Toothless to murder Stoick. I think over all the second movie was the best.
@Avery_Autumn5 жыл бұрын
He reminded me a little bit of Viggo from the How to train your dragon TV series. Viggo was such a good villan and because it was a TV show there was enough time for his character to be expanded on and given alot of character development. It was sadly lost with Grimmel because he was a villan in a short 2 hour movie.

@SasukeUchiwa1045 жыл бұрын
@@zoelindwall637 I liked HTTYD 3 too. Overall I really liked it. But it felt kind of rushed at the end to me. Grimmel was a very smart villain that had great battle strategies. But in the end he was defeated by being pushed off the Lightfury and falling into the ocean, that's it. I was waiting for a big climactic battle where Hiccup comes up with a super clever strategy that works and outsmarts Grimmel, but that never happens. Hiccup and some of the other riders just charge straight into battle, take out a few dragon hunters, set their dragons free, and face off with Grimmel right away. And the face off is just Grimmel trying to recapture Toothless and the Lightfury, no big face off. The battle in the end was anticlimactic and wasn't much of a battle. We got a great battle in the 2nd movie, so I was disappointed there really wasn't one in the final movie. And I also wish Grimmel had a reason for taking out dragons, he didn't really have a backstory and was one of the only villains that didn't, even ones from the TV shows did. I did like the 3rd movie, but it felt like those things were missing and should have been included. If they expanded Grimmel's backstory and added a strategic final battle scene it would have been nearly perfect. Grimmel had a lot of potential as a villain but he felt less threatening in the end because he was easily defeated.

It wasn't really bad, but it wasn't the best either. The story dragged for a long time. The final fight felt anticlimactic because it was extremely short and because the villain was underdeveloped. I felt myself thinking, "Is that it? That can't be it." The goodbye scene was underwhelming and I feel like the movies wasn't long enough to really focus on the characters. The subplots contribute to this struggle for runtime. I agree with Saber's rating of a 7.5.

@LozzieOzzzie5 жыл бұрын
I think there should have been one more movie after this so that they could have planned a much more epic fight and a much more satisfying goodbye to the dragons. Maybe having the main focus of 3 the villain where we get to know more about night furies (I really feel like that was lacking in this movie) and 4 similar to this one but much less of the villain and more about Hiccup and Astrid considering marriage, Toothless having a girlfriend (Light fury), everyone saying goodbye to the dragons, etc. Obviously some action in both of these to give them a climax. I honestly think 3 felt rushed because they crammed so much into it when it could have really been two separate movies.
@sorapokeball5 жыл бұрын
*Spoilers* I was dissatisfied with the conclusion. Even if you discount the TV series as canon, the ending was still illogical. What about all the dragons that we at the poachers compound? Or all the dragons they'd discovered living in the wild? Just because all of Berk's dragons made it to the hidden world doesn't mean all of the world's dragons are safe. Did Toothless go out on his own to rescue dragons around the world? From the ending it seems like neither he nor Hiccup left their respective homes to do such things. And ten-ish years isn't enough time for people to suddenly stop believing that dragons are real. Unless Hiccup is an immortal being speaking to us, the viewers in modern time. I think it was also a missed opportunity to learn more about night furies from the villain. I know they wanted to conclude the series, but here was this wealth of information that they just glossed over. Why did light furies survive in the hidden world but night furies didn't? In that sequence you can see that Toothless's mate isn't the only light fury. All in all, too many plot holes for my taste, especially for such an intricate and well thought out series. I feel like they could have done a different ending that didn't necessitate separating the dragons from their humans. I know they were going for the big emotional pay off, but it seemed like kind of a slap in the face, really.
@JadeDolphin225 жыл бұрын
Myorp Right! Especially, Valka, Hiccups mothers dragon Cloud chaser! Those two had been together for over 20 years without him leaving her for a mate. Seems really odd and unnecessary for all the dragons to leave their humans.
@cozmicdoodles71675 жыл бұрын
@@CanOpenerSmoothDream The whole point of the dragons leaving was to keep them safe. It doesn't matter how strong of a bond they had with their humans, if the dragons stayed, both the Vikings and the dragons would be in danger. And Toothless is their Alpha, so of course they'd follow him.
@CoolMagmar5 жыл бұрын
For me it made little sense to let the dragons go when they killed all the antagonists, the main villain fall to his death and the others were in a metal cage in a flaming boat, like I would understand if the villains are alive or they showed that they couldn't fight back and/or save every dragon, so the best action was to let them go away, even that the Hidden World is only protected because you need to fly to get there, and all the villains control dragons in a certain way, so yeah not 100% save place to the dragons in the end. And I agree with the fact that people forgot about dragons was quite strange when the series showed us that dragons are everywhere and I doubt Toothless could rescue every dragon from the poachers... and wasn't dragon scales, bones and horns used all the time? One thing I still don't get, been years since I saw the first movie so I can be wrong, but wasn't the Night Furry big deal was that nobody ever saw them? Why did so many people know at first glance what Night Fury is? I know this is a thing since the second movie but still, find this so strange.
@Shaddiewolf5 жыл бұрын
100% agreed, it made no sense. Hiccup and the vikings basically just gave up. That's the only explanation for sending the dragons away. And that does not make for satisfying cinema! Think about it, If there were still more bad guys in the world capturing dragons, then who would save them once the Dragon Riders disbanded? It is clear from all of the movies that the humans had to rely on their dragon counterparts in order to successfully pull off raids. Without their dragon mounts, they would not be able to free any more dragons. So they basically accepted the fact that evil people were just going to keep killing dragons. They just decided to turn a blind eye to it because fighting for something you believe in is just "too dangerous" or some bull crap. "But they defeated all the dragon hunters!" you might say. WELL WHY DID THEY FORCE THEIR DRAGONS TO LEAVE THEN?! It's all so very stupid and doesn't make any sense. I thought for sure that the bulk of the dragons would leave, but then the few who had bonded strongly with their riders (like Cloudjumper, Toothless, Stormfly, etc) would return because they valued their bonds over a boring life of safety in some watery hole... I was so disappointed, shocked, and frustrated with the ending. It makes the whole trilogy feel so pointless to me now.

I don't recall Hiccup's mom being a character in them, let alone Snotlout hitting on her, lol. The books, while meant for children, are pretty funny and are completely different from the movies themselves. For one thing, dragons and vikings were never enemies but allies to the Vikings where you proved your journey into adult hood by stealing an egg, hatching it, and raising the dragon to be essentially your hunting dog. I'd give the books an honest try.

And now that I think about it I don't think the the offspring would even be fertile, making them incapable of reproducing. Night fury and Light fury are of familiar species(in appearance) but they are not actually the same. Just like if you breed a tiger with a lion or a horse with a zebra, the offspring cannot reproduce.

@Future Karate Master SPOIL ALERT WARNING!! Read at your own risk. . . . . . . . But at the end of the movie toothless and light fury have offspring. Where is dagur or heather or other allys that was in Race to the edge. And many many more things that were wrong. Sorry for bad english.

I was hoping that the plot was going to be the Lightfury showing up, triggering Hiccup to make a decision about letting Toothless be happy - not some bland villain's master plan forcing them. I would have much preferred the whole movie be about Hiccup's dilemma with a focus on him and Toothless (and by extension Astrid) because that ending was so cute and satisfying. The plot with the villain felt pointless to me and a rehash of movie 2s. But I guess if that were the case there'd be a lack of fights in their eyes, which is a huge selling point for this franchise. At least the 2nd one had quiet moments, which I felt were a huge reason the 1st one did such a good job with the story. The 3rd one it's just constant running, fighting, chasing, etc. The moments between Toothless and the Lightfury are all the breaks we get and were great, but to me it just wasn't enough. I always feel Dreamworks should just push for a longer movie with these kinds because there's just so much to cover that it feels like something like Storks - intended for kids with constant movement and action to keep them entertained. It leaves this feeling of being rushed. Case and point: the movie is called Hidden World but while there is some intent to search for it, the movie isn't REALLY about the Hidden World. . . it's more like Run away from big bad buy #2 and the Hidden World is just a bonus of that.
@joshuanorman25 жыл бұрын
Imo the stakes really should've been higher. The humans and dragons really could've coexisted. But, (spoilers for the books) in the books there is a three way war, between humans that want to kill all dragons, humans that want to save all dragons and dragons that want to kill all humans. There is also literally a gem that can kill all dragons in the blink of an eye. The book's stakes are just so much higher and really makes the ending feel so much more realistic.

The animation had me blown completely away. every character looked amazing - Astrid was GORGEOUS in this movie. The Hidden World animation and design floored me. That’s why I’m so sad it was barely in the movie, but probs cuz it was expensive. The whole movie is called the Hidden World and it was shown for like...5 minutes tops? There were a few conveniences that bothered me, and of course the movie was very predictable, but that didn’t take away from the amazing ness of it. I think one thing I absolutely loved was that the sequences just between Toothless and the Light Fury were LONG and you didn’t even need dialogue to understand what they were saying to each other. Just their noises, faces, and movements spoke volumes and that blew me away. The whole sequence of them flying together in the sky had me breathless - the communication was so clear even without speaking. I found that incredibly heartfelt and I would love to know the thought process and planning behind those sequences. The music is still absolutely beautiful.

I simply loved this movie, at the end I was crying at the thought of this beautiful trilogy ending. I'd like if there was some other hybrid in the movies or the TV serie. Night Lights (Toothless and Light Fury cubs) are the first hybrids we meet and I think it would be cool if there were others like them (maybe there was someone else and I simply don't remember), even cause Night and Light Furies were really similar 'cause the second are just a subspecies, an hybrid between two different dragons (obviously not two incompatible breeds) could be really interesting to see and have a cooler look.

The other night I finally watched the last How To Train Your Dragon film and I really loved the film at first, but after having a couple days to think about it I feel like it honestly really defeats the message of the rest of the entire series. I still love the movie, and I can see why they went with the ending they did, and it's definitely the most realistic ending, but I feel like it would have been so much better if instead they had of decided that instead of having dragons hide away until the world is safe for them, for the berkians to hide with them until that day. The whole message of the first two films is to be who you are un-apologetically and without shame, and to accept those who are, and this ending just seems like an admission of defeat to do so. If they had of went with the dragons it would have been like "Well, the dragons will always be in danger up here until our society changes, so we'll just wait with them until you're ready." instead of being like "Well, the dragons will always be in danger up here until our society changes, so we may as well just send them away until we're all ready". It's still the same idea, but it doesn't feel like an admission of defeat, and is instead more like a statement of defiance against the rest of humanity. That's really my biggest, and only, issue with this film to be completely honest.

I actually felt kind of the opposite when it comes to the side characters. In the second movie the bonds and relationships between the characters, their dragons and each other felt a lot stronger. I don’t ONLY care about toothless and hiccup, all the other side characters have their charm and purpose but it wasn’t quite there (although I did enjoy that scene with ruffnut) stormfly wasn’t as bouncy and fun. Hookfang, meatlug, barf and belch were barely there. Idk I guess I was into more than just the movies and grew to care a whole bunch about the other characters and their dragons too. Also, toothless kinda seems a lot more anxious to leave? Like there was a scene where he was hesitant to leave but he kinda seemed more than excited to go. I enjoyed the movie, don’t get me wrong, it just felt off. I know the purpose of the movie was to lead up to toothless leaving and starting a family, and all the dragons leaving but it felt kinda halfhearted when they did.

The theme of this movie was terrible, tbh. It's not just about saying goodbye, it's about the Vikings and dragons all returning to the in-groups they had before the events of HTTYD 1, because they found out that improving the world is really hard and decided to just give up on it. It's a complete betrayal of what the first movie was about, and it unfortunately ended in a way that prevents the possibility of it being fixed with a future installment.

If you watch the Netflix series, Hiccup's friends get much more development, and it's pretty great. Tuffnut is pretty great actually, more than just a guy with a beard. I was a bit disappointed that the third movie sort of pushed them into the corner the way it did; in the show they are pretty competent at taking down enemy ships, though always with dragons, and it could be said still that perhaps they take their dragons for granted. Though in the movie I do wish they weren't shown as totally incompetent. As for the villain, I feel he didn't get enough time to really develop. Spoilers: [His origin was very similar to Hiccup's in that he killed his first dragon instead of sparing it, and fighting with his intellect and knowledge instead of his raw strength. It had a lot of potential, but he wasn't really developed. He was like a bloodthirsty version of Viggo Grimborn, a fantastic villain from the Netflix series, if Viggo craved the hunt and not just money.] But yes, overall, it was a good way to end to the series.
@Shaddiewolf5 жыл бұрын
This was the weakest of the trilogy in my opinion. Even worse, I feel like it was a slap in the face of the other two movies. It felt extremely rushed, there was way too much going on, and the finale came out of nowhere. I never expected they would end the series in such a stupid way. They didn't even give the farewell between the two main characters, the two characters that the ENTIRE franchise revolves around, a meaningful time on the screen! It was just like "Okay, bye bye!" The farewell in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron had more heart to it, and that was a one-off movie! It was honestly so rushed and carefree that I thought it was a joke. I thought the dragons that the Dragon Riders had would come back afterwards because they loved their Riders more than they enjoyed their supposed safety. I thought that the bond they shared together was worth the danger. But no. We never see them again. So what was the entire dang point of the first two movies then?!?
@anfani68395 жыл бұрын
100% I thought the same. I was like "are you kidding me?", when all of the dragons just flew off with no problems whatsoever that they wont see their riders ever again. Toothless also was a total jerk in this movie to Hiccup, he just left him once he built a new fin for him and wouldnt even have returned in the first place if Hiccup and Astrid wouldnt have gone looking for him. Soo...basically all those Riders - especially Hiccup and Toothless - built up a wonderful bond for 2 movies and one entire series just so that they leave without any problems at the end of the third movie, because....well because what? Because Toothless got to know one underdeveloped lightfury he has known for 3 days and all the other dragons just went with it because the humans didnt deserve them. Pls what? Its one slap in the face for sure - I thought the message of this series always was that riders and dragons have some undestroyable bond and one strong friendship, but this movie just straight up kills everything that has been there before for absolutely no good reason whatsoever
@Shaddiewolf5 жыл бұрын
@@anfani6839 Yes! Toothless was a huge jerk! I thought him and Hiccup were best friends, but he just straight up ditches Hiccup as soon as he can fly on his own. @anfani68395 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. That was 100% not the same Toothless Ive got to know in the first two movies. Before I watched this movie, I honestly thought that Grimmel would send out the Lightfury to distract Toothless and make him torn between Hiccup and her so that Hiccup and he would have arguments over her, but eventually their friendship would prove once again and at the end the lightfury could become good and live with the humans. I still thought that when Toothless was flying out alone after the lightfury, that she would lure him into a trap from Grimmel, but nooo.... he fucks off and pretends that the last few years of his life together with Hiccup didnt happen. I really dont get how so many people love this movie and say it was fantastic - it was one single desaster with all those flaws and things that doesnt make any sense. You should have said, " It's basically how to train your dragon two, but fanfiction." That's all this reveiw needed.

I was worried about it being a copy from the trailers. Find a new world, stop a bad guy from capturing dragons, have baby dragons help along the way. It all seemed familiar.

This would be a great series for your channel! I love your videos man, and I can't wait for what's next. Keep up the good work. The first one I really liked for how unique and original it was. My favorite however is the second one. It had such an Empire Strikes Back feel and 'epicness' to it. I enjoyed this third one, but not as good as the sequel. Also, 7.5/10?... That's exactly what I gave it too!

I thought Grimel (villain) was kinda one-dimensional and they could’ve made him more interesting. I think the rest of the movie was great though.

I was disappointed that no flak cannons shot any dragons down, I was promised flak cannons.
