I like that method. I've twice used the approach where you wet sand with progressively finer paper (I used 400, 800, and 2000 grit since that's what I had in stock). Then you hit it with clear coat (which requires masking, of course). Brought back some severely degraded headlights that were very yellow. Took a lot longer than three minutes, however! Thanks for sharing.

works well and is very cheap. i really dislike having to wet sand, multiple steps etc. if you do this twice a year, your headlights will stay clear for many years. eventually they are going to get cloudy and dull, but this polish slows down the process somewhat. :) thanks for the video!

Following advice of another YTer I did this a few years ago and followed up with an acrylic coat supposedly to stop UV damage so I would “never have to do this again”. Here I am doing it again. Should I expect the Mothers to cut the acrylic or is that going to require sanding do you think?

That is how I have been doing it. Works well but only seems to last about a half year. Car sit out side in the sun

For anyone wanting to restore their headlights, just go to the auto parts store and buy a variety pack of sandpaper, then mask off the area and start with 600 grit and go to 2500 grit stopping when each grit slides smoothly while wet sanding with water. You can finish it with some fine buffing compound and a drill with a soft pad or just do it by hand.

Or just buy the headlight repair kit from harbor freight. It comes with all the sandpaper grits and even some polishing compound. It also comes with a drill attachment and masking tape. Works pretty well! These were not bad enough or I would have demonstrated how to use the kit.

@@1D10CRACY I haven't seen that kit, it may be cheaper. I restored my daughter's headlights on her Jeep but I already had all the sandpaper, buffing compounds and drill attachments.

@@fg146 Looks like the kit is currently 14 bucks. It starts off at 500 and finishes off at 3000 grit. Then there is a rubbing compound to polish it out. I've used it twice on headlights that had started to yellow and afterwards they looked pretty good! The next set of really bad headlights I come across I'll try to do a video on it.

The way shown in the video looks easier than your sandpaper method.

This works but sometimes the issue is on the inside of the headlight

Stupid question, if I can ask...what type Chemical Guys cleaner is that that you used? Just curious, never seen that shade of green in their cleaners before....

I've used this....yes, it's excellent to get the surface as smooth as baby's behind, and yields a 95% result. However, the lens "seems" to still cast a yellw-ish tinge all the way through. How to fix that?

@@elcomandante9299 ....that's not a fix. Have since found that applying OFF ! deep woods bug spray repellent and immediately wiping the "Softened" plastic surface, results in removing a lot of the yellow...almost all.

It depends on how bad the fog is. If it's too deep into the plastic, then yeah, nothing is going to work. My boss had lenses on a Honda that had fogged up on the inside of the lens. Nothing would work for that scenario either. For lenses like in this video where the outside layer is the issue, it works.

Meh * I just did them on a 9 year old highlander. the lenses were fogged, etched looking(not actually etched) I bought the exact same pad kit you used, drill on low speed. did them twice. put quality carnuba wax on also. I would give it 50% better and 50% still there. Now lets see how long this lasts. I will put my $$ on the comment that said twice a year. And you know what ? I would take that. I have to do black plastic trim on suv every 2 months(plastic trim restorer-not this stuff). so 6 months on lenses would be ok.

I've seen lenses that were so bad there really wasn't anything you could do. Sometimes they are messed up on the inside of the lenses too.

Once the clear coat is gone, UV eats them and nothing will fix them for long. I’d just as soon replace the lenses.

I've been amazed at how long this trick lasts. I use to use tooth paste and a drill polisher. I could easily get well over a year out of them, but again I usually wax them when I wax the car. But yes, if you plan to keep your car for many years, replacing them might not be a bad idea. On the other hand it's a great option to buy time and not spend a lot of money.
