Tip for new players like myself: Send Enrique as one of the generals of the army and hopefully he dies and you get a better heir or a heir that can initiate the Iberian Wedding Also when I followed this tutorial, I had allied Portugal, Aragon, and the Papal States and vassalized Navarra so when I declared war, Aragon and the Papal States were clapping Tunis' cheeks that I didn't really have to do anything. Even in eu4 1.30 this tutorial holds up well, thanks Quill

I had to join Portugal in their war with Morocco so i took advantage and got 5 provinces from Morocco. THEN, i took the 3 provinces in the south of Castilla. I god the Personal Union with Aragon so my next move will be to take all of Portugal. Im in year 1460. Half of Morocco will be mine so ill probably take the other half in 1490s or so. This game is so fun, im a newbie but i love history.

Hint: you CAN use "control groups" (CTRL + 1,2,3, ...) like in an RTS for your armies/fleets. The major benefit for this isnt really better unit control but rather the ability to quickly jump to the unit. You can do the same by clicking on the army/fleet in the "list" (outliner) on the right, but that would use the mouse and a key is always quicker. Personally I even rename my armies/fleets to the province they are "stationed in" (during peacetime). This helps spreading them more evenly across my empire to combat rebel uprisings.

I have been really enjoying these, I have not played since a couple months after launch, and it is a good way to get back in and into the new features. One thing though, there is a lot of DLC for EU4, and it is not quite as cut and dry as crusader kings, where most DLC lets you play new government or religious types and adds features to the new playable types. It would be great to see a video or small series on what the EU4 DLC does, so I can determine which, if any, are worth getting.

42:00 missing those heavies yet, quill? I'm miffed that you decided to advise people to dump heavies in a tutorial. Sure, going all lights (especially early game) is a legitimate tactic, but keeping AT LEAST the three heavies you started with is also a legitimate tactic, especially when you knew a naval war with the North-African Muslims was coming. For those here to learn the game: don't toss your heavies if you can afford them, especially if you have the expansions (one of which allows you to mothball ships like heavies when at peace, reducing the money drain from upkeep). 42:45 Not regretting getting rid of the heavies, eh? Yea, sure, don't learn from your mistakes. Great attitude for a tutorial. This war would be cheaper for you, and quicker, if you had absolute naval supremacy throughout. You could have killed (or vastly reduced) their fleets early on, blockaded with the heavies and transports, and sent your light ships back to protecting trade to increase trade income. 46:20 Did anybody catch how quickly those 3 Portuguese heavies (that reinforced their transports) annihilated those 5 enemy ships (2 light, 2 galley, 2 trans). Huh, guess keeping those heavies payed off for Portugal. >.
@ZakTheFallen
@ZakTheFallen 8 жыл бұрын
+Raptorx911 I fully agree, it's not worth destroying those 3 heavies, just in case you need them for a war. In my Castille game, I took Granada when they had no allies, but then was fighting England AND Portugal so I could defend France. We won the war, but my 3 heavies were pretty useless in that case. England and Portugal have much stronger navies, they had 8 heavies combined! But, I was able to win a war against Aragon and Naples thanks to those same heavy ships, because combined with France's navy we curb-stomped both countries and took some land. :D
@Raptorx911
@Raptorx911 8 жыл бұрын
ZakTheFallen Naval combat verses England early game? That's a paddlin'. ;) Still, your war with Aragon/Naples was on point. I was a little worried quill would get a surprise declaration of war from Aragon and then enjoy repeated naval landings from Naples since he disbanded his naval control. He could still easily win, but it would be EASIER if he kept his fleet competitive. Quill just performed what I call the 'Arumba fleet strategy' (even though many others often do it, including DDRJake), because Arumba is so anti-heavy it's frightening.

I love that you're only 5 years in to this campaign and it's already very different than my Castile run. I started out being hated by England and France, peacefully annexed Navarra and got a PU over Aragon. I am best buddies with Portugal, but I am a little concerned about how fast they are colonising in the Caribbean and they took a huge chunk out of Marrakesh and Morocco too. They might already be too powerful for me to do anything about and they are allied with England.

Make their stats a guaranteed 0/0/x so they won't be used for warfare but in turn you don't lose MIL just by doing the colonial game. Illyrian Prince get this is a year old. My reply is mainly for anyone new who might read this. I’d recommend France assuming you watched this tutorial. It’s extremely easy to secure your southern border with alliances and everyone to your east is to weak to attack you. So you can basically just focus on England for awhile. It’s good for new players because there’s a lot of room to make mistakes due to all these advantages.

@@gryffith1378 the game is a map painter, you basically set your own goals and try achieve them...thinking is the best way to play this, it's not like TW or CIV that you have the exact "big army=victory" type of gameplay...you focus on many things and trust me if you learn the basics you can have so much fun with wars and generally making the name of your nation larger and larger

transports are the 2nd toughest ships in the game after heavies, they just don't much in the way of damage strength. But having transports can make your fleet much tougher if the enemies target them instead of your more fragile lights and galleys giving your lights/galleys time to finish their enemies and attack them.

Quill, because you were vastly stronger than Navarra, you would have taken over as war leader against Aragon and friends. Since this is a beginning tutorial as Castile, you should know that this war dec happens very often from Aragon. It is one of the early ways to get at war with Aragon without having to deal with Portugal as well (which is possible, but definitely drains your force limit). And no, Portugal would not have joined. They were allied with England and at war with France AND Navarra already. They could not have joined because they were already at war with Navarra.

Embargo non-Rival does NOT reduce your trade power! It gives a -10% to income from collecting gold, where you are collecting (home or others). Nothing else 'just' a flat reduction of gold earned from collecting. (interesting fact, the modifier from collecting gold can never fall below 0%, so can't be negative. You never can loose gold from collecting. Interesting to consider to embargo more than a few over your rival limit. Like lets say everyone in the world) (unless paradox change the mechanic again but last time I checked it was the case working this way, can't check newest patch since i play on older version and don't want to risk my save game ;) )

I know that this is a beginners tutorial - but even as someone who has primarily learned from watching your and Arumba's LPs and hasn't really played much on my own I can't help but feel the need to bully Tunis some and see if there's some vassal to be broken off down there or whatnot. It'd be a waste to just 'wait' and do nothing for several ingame years. Even though such a war effort would result in troop losses.

I have been following through with this tutorial series, and i must say at this point that I'm a total novice when it comes to EUIV. I have been extremely unlucky in my first attempt, as I have had several negative events which has really crippled me. Enrique is unfortunately my new ruler after the king died, and I have put him to lead one of my armies in the hope that he will die, I have also lost 10 prestige due to a random event, and I'm really thinking that I'm going to have to start over. i never seem to have much luck with these games. But this is a great tutorial series.

We did great but France took so long to peace out so I declared on Aragon and forgot to turn my land maintenance back up and got destroyed then the British landed and tucked up my 20 stack, but Enrique died for me and I got a 4/4/5 Queen for a replacement then the civil ear started and I GOT the Iberian wedding which spawned more rebels I have like 50k rebels to fight with. I bought this game after seeing these tutorials because i've always found the game interesting but too complicated to dive into. Tried it for a few hours yesterday and had good fun, but found it really hard to get more than like +0.5 income. Is this because i choose very small nations with only a few provinces as starting position (I wanted to try starting as my home country). e.g i tried some dutch ones but its been really rough in the first few years. Also is it bad to start a nation that is under a different nation, it seems a big disadvantage not having independance.
@franzfanz
@franzfanz 8 жыл бұрын
+llindenau Start with a larger nation like Castile, France, the Ottomans, Muscovy. England is a good pick as you can just turn to colonisation if you lose your European holdings and use your ships to defend your homeland. If you want to play in the Holy Roman Empire then choose Brandenburg as they have super soldiers. I would say that Portugal is the easiest nation but perhaps the most boringist as you can use Castile/Spain as a shield while you beat up natives in the New World. Castile is probably my number one pick for starting as you can do a little bit of everything. Don't start your first game as vassal/less partner. You need a big army/good allies to break free.

+llindenau Yeah, playing smaller nations is much harder. Also, when you click on a nation on the country pick menu notice that there is a bar that showed you how hard or easy it is to play. It takes into consideration many different factors and can give you an indication regarding whether you are jumping into the deep end of the pool. Also, most of the dutch minors are vassals of Burgundy at this point, if you took one of those then part of your monthly income goes straight to Burgundy. Lastly, early on in the game you have little ability to up your gold because you can't build buildings yet. Let me point out that once you do get better and you do manage to play a dutch minor and turn it into the Netherlands, you get an amazing country with a unique mechanic!

Can someone here explain to me how to maintain a low Liberty desire percent with Aragon and Naples cause I have a PU with them and they have 60% and 40% Liberty desire already.(sorry for grammatical mistakes).
@maxben3391
@maxben3391 8 жыл бұрын
+Some person There is an option in the vassal management tab to lower your own prestige to lower their Liberty Desire. You can also build a larger army then them and, more difficult, a larger economy. Lastly, just plain relations, throw diplomat at them.

I don't know why they can't split up the available leaders so the navy and army are separate.
@danjal87nl

Leaders represent *all* leaders. Not just navy and army (though generals and admirals are the primary 2). Which primarily comes into its own once you have a nation that doesn't really do both land and sea games. At which point it'd be very annoying to have half your potential leader slots 'locked down' because they've been dedicated to sea or land leaders. (Note that the explorer and conquistador etc are also 'leaders'.)

+Danjal Veskandar It's very rare for anyone to ever make Admirals, because the limit is one leader for players. Even naval nations like England rarely make them until later on when they have a higher limit. Even then, you can just put it into more Generals, since Generals are just more useful.
@ckhawk00
@ckhawk00 8 жыл бұрын
Danjal Veskandar you buy leaders with different monarch points, so I don't see why they can't use a separate formula for determining them. Like it was said below it's silly for a coastal power to have to share the leader pool.
@danjal87nl
@danjal87nl 8 жыл бұрын
ckhawk00 Right now you have all your leaders share the same slots. If you need more generals than admirals then thats fine. If they forced a split, but you're landlocked. You'll be permanently left with half your "leader slots" locked to navy without every going to build a single ship. I think you have the idea that by splitting them you suddenly get twice as many leaders - but that would drastically unbalance the game. If they were split you would simply take twice as long before a second or third leader slot were to unlock for each catagory to balance the difference and you'd overall still be left with the same number of leaders. TL;DR - you would become less flexible and have decreased control.

Carl Gripenberg I've seen plenty of games where people use admirals. And then there's explorers... Which I believe like conquistadors also fit in the leader catagory?

hmm let's think about it for a while uh it requires NVIDIA® GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon® X1900, 1024mb video memory recommended (512mb video memory required minimum) to play and i don't think an iPad would have that

This game, I swear to God. I conquer a country, work on integrating it, put down rebellions, then get a random event that spawns a stack that's a third again as strong as my entire military. It's like playing a roguelike where you run into complete RNG events where the game says, "You lose."
