Dr Usama Hasan, Senior Researcher at Quilliam, on the BBC's The Big Questions on 15/03/15. The question discussed is "Do British Muslims have a problem with apostates?".
Quilliam is the world’s first counter-extremism think tank set up to address the unique challenges of citizenship, identity, and belonging in a globalised world. Quilliam stands for religious freedom, equality, human rights and democracy.
Our IndieGoGo Campaign: "Countering Extremism Together":
igg.me/at/OpenYourEyesQF
We need your help to raise £25,000 to help us address extremism through the medium of film, for two main reasons. Firstly, it is clear that extremist organisations are increasingly adept at using technology and producing professional video content to achieve their aims of radicalisation and recruitment. Secondly, one of our main beliefs is that effectively countering extremism requires a civil society approach - financial support from global citizens united in the fight against extremism is a great way that our supporters can take ownership of this with positive action.
Your generous donations and support will help fight back against extremism by funding the production of three counter-narrative videos, targeted at the three areas listed above: building resilience, raising awareness, and promoting best practice. In addition, we will also be able to produce an educational animated video explaining Quilliam’s approach to counter-extremism
REWARDS: There are also a number of exciting rewards available for people who donate using our IndieGoGo campaign, ranging from:
- a limited edition #OpenYourEyes glow in the dark wristband
- being included as an executive producer in the credits of the counter-narrative videos
- a signed copy of RADICAL
- two advanced VIP tickets to Quilliam’s summer ball
- a VIP private dinner with our chairman Maajid Nawaz

A small verse in the holy book of the peacefull community..... [9:5] But when the forbidden 4 months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever you find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.[Quran 9:5-5 (Translated by Yusuf Ali)]

They fear their God.. fear of God was fear of doing bad things to encounter the punishment, not fearing a punishment for saying the right thing. I am a Christian but if yiu ask me if it is right to stone people like Moses said was the law at the time i would say no, but we had an advancment with Jesus that already abolished the law of stoning and circumcision and jewish food list and other prohibitions. Islam even if it came 600 years after Jesus it is like it came back at the time of Moses when the people were not very civilized and they needed different rules to have justice. Islam does not allow (if it doesn't evolve by itself, or accepting Jesus as the Messia) separation between state constitution and religion and it is difficult to find real islamic countries with true freedom of speech, freedom of religion or any other freedom that secular countries have. And we have more wealth and happiness in these secular countries where the people it is free to express each other without harming others forcing them to do what they pretend to be right. They can advice them, but violence is a crime for my religion and for the constitution of any modern state.

Or what about the fatwah against ISIS that was made by the Mufti of Saudi Arabia? Do you credit that? Or the thousands of Indian Muslims that condemned ISIS? Or Muslims that have marched against terrorism more than once in various parts of the world, or made speeches or written books against it? My ancestors committed genocide upon the Native Americans. I know how this plays out. You make up to bar for the Other to pass over or some hoop for them to jump through and then you threaten violence if they don't do that. With the Native Americans, it was prayer villages where they had to dress like Europeans and worship Jesus. After that was when the death march known as the Trail of Tears began. They were marched from North Carolina to Oklahoma. Thousands died- after they assimilated. German Jews were as assimilated as it is possible to be. Condemning stuff didn't save them. The Nazis were just looking for an excuse to do what they already had in mind to do.

Because they are constantly on the back foot, defending there backward 7th century ideology. Islam refuses to adapt to changes in attitudes, and I'm not just talking about the religious aspect, more so the political aspect, as outlined by the lady in this video. FGM, stoning for adultery, death for apostates, a woman's word being worth half that of a man, polygamy, incest, paedophilia, the list goes on. And all these practices are sanctioned in the Qur'an, even now, in the 21st century, Muslims refuse to aknowlege what is, or why these practices are wrong. Yet they continue to migrate to countries that are more libertarian, and have contradictory views to Islam.

You should read into islam. It is not how the media portrays it. Look without judgement and only read things you can find the background of: things you can trace back to where it begun. Dont read the mainstream media and read things that are from way back. When there were no muslims in europe. Read that. I do have to warn you that it is extremely much work but if you do it correctly, you will find that the islam is indeed the real religion. There is this dutch polititian, called Joram van Klaveren. He was fighting islam for years and years. Until he got the task to write a book about how bad islam was. He begun.. and he traced the information he believed back and saw that it wasnt true. looked rationally at his own belief (christianity) and islam. Search him on youtube im sure you will find something. I think you should do the same. Everyone. And if you dont want to, then just dont.

@Jupiter_Crash
@Jupiter_Crash 5 жыл бұрын
Jabir Bin Hayyan - I get a vibe of nervousness from her but when you’re opening a show that seems reasonable. Neuroticism is not classified as a mental illness which you’re claiming she has. Do you know this woman because it’s a LONG TERM condition not something that is displayed short term like a 30 min show. So unless you have an ongoing connection with her there’s no possible way you can say she’s neurotic. She’s using personal and anecdotal experiences because she was asked “why did YOU leave Islam? (0:55) (6:07) She refers to taqiyya and is calling him out for lying to further the cause of Islam. She is making an accurate claim here. He’s denying and can’t provide a clear answer. (6:27) She asks him why he is lying about the Sharia. This is a great question from her because she’s calling him out for his saying there is no Sharia legal stance against apostates when in fact that’s what the topic of the show is. (7:20) She’s calling out the fact that you can witness Haitham al Haddad support the of killing of apostates, FGM, and wife beating on KZbin which is accurate. (8:51) She’s relaying her experience that she was raised without a choice to leave Islam. She further clarifies that it is not in the Quran but the Hadith, which is true. Her point is supported by countless others on KZbin who claim they fear for their lives if the come out as non-believers. (10:52) She explains more people are in the closet about not believing in Islam than those converting to Islam. I don’t know if her claim is accurate because Islam silences the voices of those wanting to leave. They fear being kicked out by their families in the West or being killed if they live in a Sharia State. However, she is there as a representative of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain and most likely hears the stories of people who feel silenced by The Hadith’s stance on apostasy and reach out to her organization for help. I don’t find this claim to be illogical or painting a broad conclusion as you might see it. I do think it would be helpful for her to present data if she has any. I can go through the rest of the video comment-by-comment but I don’t see what you see. She doesn’t seem bitter or non-academic. She indeed comes across as having a voice and an opinion based on her and others’ experiences and which I find credible and valid. In conclusion, I feel the original poster on this thread is accurate in labeling her as “extremely brave.”
@Jupiter_Crash
@Jupiter_Crash 5 жыл бұрын
Jabir Bin Hayyan - A personality trait is NOT a mental illness like you originally claimed. I don’t even see glimpses of neurotic tendencies. Please feel free to time stamp instances where you observe them. She doesn’t call him a liar. She says he’s engaged in “trickery” because he won’t answer the host’s question. If he was being straight forward he wouldn’t of tried turning-the-table on the question he would of said something like I’m not here to denounce any person specifically but I’ll denounce FGM, wife beating, and the killing of apostates and gays. Instead he deflects and twists then only denounced FGM when pressed BUT is conveniently silent about denouncing the other three forms of torture/death. Any civilized person should be able to denounce FGM, wife beating, and the killing of apostates and gays with directness and ease. His inability to do that speaks volumes about where he stands on these barbaric rituals.
@Jupiter_Crash
@Jupiter_Crash 5 жыл бұрын
Jabir Bin Hayyan - Please time stamp where she calls him a liar because it’s not in the video I’m watching. Key signs and symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder include: Intense fear of abandonment Unstable personal relationships Unstable or distorted self-image Risky, reckless or impulsive behaviors Self-harming behavior, which may include suicide attempts or threats Recurring feelings of emptiness or boredom Depression and anxiety Intense outbursts of anger followed by shame or guilt Dissociative feelings, loss of contact with reality It takes a professional several sessions and testing to make such a diagnosis and even then it is often misdiagnosed. I think you’re way out of line to even suggest she’s got mental illness let alone diagnose her with a specific mental disorder when she shows none of the key symptoms. As far as her being passive-aggressive I don’t see it. She’s very straight forward and assertive which is opposite to being passive-aggressive. Good luck to you and I hope you’ll reconsider hurling unfounded ad hominem attacks on people who disagree with your ideology in the future.

First off this is not my story. After coming back from Saudi Arabia to my motherland as an Atheist, I felt pity on my aging parents, who are wasting their precious time in praying five times a day, plus in additional midnight prayers. Apart from that, they were always in fear about their death and the tortures they may receive in their graves as per the teachings of Islam. As a filial, loving son, and a responsible human being, I vowed to liberate my beloved parents from the shackles and tyranny of the Islamic dogma. But it was a very difficult task to explain the faults of religion to people in their 70s so as to change their belief. I explained to my religious parents the complete scenario of my experience in Saudi Arabia: the disrespectful behavior of most of the Saudis and their “(in)hospitality” toward non-Muslims and non-Arab Muslims. They simply rejected my words and were not prepared to hear anything odd about their Arab brothers. It’s because the non-Arab Muslims hold great reverence for the Saudis, since they belongs to Islam’s holy land, the land of their beloved prophet. Let me, here, make it clear that I do not hate the Saudis, who have been fooled by Prophet Muhammad and his Islam. Instead, I feel pity for them, as they are the first and worst victims of Islam. Determined to enlighten my parents about the true face of Islam, I persisted and my parents eventually accepted my words about the Saudis. But to absolve Islam of the Saudi’s bad behavior and attitude, they now switched argument: Maybe you are correct, because the bad Saudis had given so much trouble to our beloved prophet during his lifetime. Here, my parents now tried to shield Prophet Muhammad, the only one Saudi man, thanks to tremendous reverence they hold toward him. Then, I revealed the true character of Muhammad to them from his hadiths, which also make the Saudis behave in such manners. Then they said, they don’t trust the hadiths, as most of them were written by the enemies of Islam. Since they said they don’t trust the hadiths, I told them, in frustration, to stop praying five times a day, because the Quran never mentions anything about praying five times a day; it is only mentioned in the hadiths. While Muslims overwhelmingly believe hadiths as the holy tradition of the Prophet, it has now become a new tactic amongst non-Arab Muslims of our age that if a hadith preaches something bout Islam and Muhammad, which is contrary to local ethics and morality, then it is a weak hadith. They are taught by the mullahs that most of the hadiths, which reveals the true character of Muhammad, but does not suit the culture of the locals, were written by the enemies of Islam. The culture of Saudi Arabia, which fits well with teachings of the Islamic scriptures, can’t fit with cultures of the rest of the World. I like to share with the readers one such “cultural difference”, which I witnessed in Saudi Arabia. I witnessed an old man, aged over 75 years, with his two wives alive, took a third time - a 17 year old Jordanian girl (Because the “cost” of the girl is comparatively cheaper in Jordan. Readers please excuse my language. But this is the reality). As he returned with the young bride, he was given a very warm welcome by his well-educated sons, aged between 40 and 50. They took him on their shoulders, clapping and singing. They don’t even bother about the fate of their own mothers. They shared the joyful moments by praising their father’s “manliness” with their neighbors and friends. The language they used to glorify their father’s “manliness” can’t be explained here, as it is too crude, pornographic. Given the sons were well-educated, we can’t blame their lack of education for such behavior. It is impossible for the civilized societies to adopt such culture, not even by the cultured non-Arab Muslim societies. The blame lies on the culture, created and encouraged by Muhammad, which can be seen in many hadiths. After all, it’s a central doctrine in Islam that Muslims must emulate the Prophet as best as possible. So, the mullahs do their best to reject such hadiths, which contradicts the local culture, as non-authentic and weak, although they are from Sahih Al-Bukhari, which Muslims accept as the authentic collection - a book, regarded next to the Quran in the Muslim world. I explained to my parents about the six authentic collections of hadiths, out of numerous collections. Their faith towards the dogma of Islam was so deep that I failed to convince them in this effort. But I am not of the sort, who would give up easily. So, this time, I showed them the Quranic verses, in which Allah asks Muslims to follow Muhammad’s sunnah and also the other important, but unacceptable, verses of the Quran. Then my father, in his 70s, also started reading the Quran, like me, in his mother tongue Urdu for the first time. For the past 70 years of his life, he had been reading the Arabic Quran daily, which he didn’t understand. As for my mom, she is an illiterate, like most of the Muslim women of her age in India, and never read the Quran even in Arabic. After reading a few pages of the Quran in Urdu, in a language that helped him understood the meaning of verses, my father, too, become disturbed because of many unacceptable verses. Having gotten a shock, he started doubting the reliability of the author, the translator and the publisher, and stopped reading it. He now scolded me for purchasing the Quran, which has been printed by the enemies of Islam - either Hindus or Christians. I was able to convince him with facts that the translation was done by the scholars of Islam, and that it was published for the benefit of Muslims. He now asked me: why Muslims are printing such wrong translations of the Quran? I told him that those scholars and publishers were not to blame; the problem was his lifelong misunderstood perception of Islam as a divine and perfect creed. My father was not ready to accept my explanations, neither was he ready to read the Quran further - even if it was published by a reliable Muslim publisher - because he was now afraid of losing his faith. At this point, I tried to encourage him to continue reading it, saying that it was not a good sign that he is afraid of losing his faith. But he totally refused to read it, and I, kind of, failed again in my mission at this point. Here, the readers can sense the level of ignorance amongst moderate Muslims, who know nothing about the real Islam, and their obdurate refusal to enlighten themselves about it. I continued nurturing hopes that my father would eventually discover the truth about Islam and free himself from its shackles. And It took me almost 10 years for my father to, eventually, read the whole Quran in Urdu. To my joy, he, at the age of 80, showed courage to read it completely. The atrocities perpetrated by Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda over recent years were vital in my convincing him to read and understand the Quran’s messages. Initially, whenever he would hear a news of Al-Qaeda’s heartless terrorist atrocities, he would start abusing Osama. But I used to argue with him so as to defend Osama as the best amongst Muslims as per the teaching of the Quran and hadiths. The atrocities committed by Osama’s Jihadi followers in the name of Islam, coupled with my arguments with him, induced my father to read the Urdu Quran, hoping to understand its real message. All thanks to Osama. Then my father requested me to brief him about some hadiths, which I had previously tried to explain to him to show Islam in a negative light. But I felt embarrassed to explain the semi-pornographic hadiths about Muhammad to my father, as a major portion of the hadiths glorifies sex and violence. So, I told him to read them by himself, instead of hearing it from someone else to be more credible. He read only a few hadiths and stopped, because he couldn’t go beyond. He had lost his faith already and declared it scrap. The reading of the Quran, biography of Muhammad and few Hadiths in a language he understood led my father into depression and may have effected his health. He was not able to come out of this shock. He repeatedly asked me, like an innocent child, about the outcome of his 80 years of worship of Islam, and the valuable time he had spent in five-time daily prayers, mid-night prayers and other Islamic deeds. I consoled him by saying not to worry about the past; instead, I encouraged him to feel happier, as he has been freed of the fear of all alleged punishments and tortures during death, in the grave and in the hereafter. He was convinced, but still, he couldn’t tolerate the way he had been cheated by the mullahs all his life. He thanked me for rescuing him from the fear of the horror of the Islamic grave and the Hell. Sadly, I have lost my beloved father within a few months of his enlightenment about Islam, as he was unable to come to terms with the shock, which not only perished his faith but also deteriorated his health. He was very dedicated Muslim and spent all his life (except the last few months) praying and reading the Quran in Arabic - “the language of Paradise” - without understanding its meaning. During his last days, he felt heavily not only about his wasted precious years, more so about the way he - an educated and intelligent person - was deceived by the mullahs for 80 years, which accelerated the worsening his health and eventually his death.

When arguing with an enlightened crowd claim islamophobia if countered or beat around the bush. 4. When you cannot prove anything, then claim - it requires belief. 5. There's a concept in Islam called taqiyyah which allows people to lie and deceive in the interest of Islam so when you find an Islamist or and apologist for Islamism evading and equivocating trying not to give committed answer or outright lies about tenets of the Sharia law remember that he is being dishonest and disingenuous he is practicing Taqiyyah. Amal tried to point that out a number of times but was cleverly silenced by the Islamists and apologists. Watch again.

@oremfrien
@oremfrien 9 жыл бұрын
SImon Sez Regardless of how nonsensical it is to bring up Jews in a discussion of Islam -- taqiyyah is quite commonly understood, whereas most Jews speak quite honestly about their faith when pressed on it. However, the origin of the word "apologist" is the Greek word "apologiya" which means "defense" (in a legal sense). The person who provides apologiya is defending a belief or idea, so you can be an apologist for any type of belief. Political actions can have apologists, religions have apologists, economic policies have apologists, human rights organizations have apologists, etc. Over time, we have cast the word in a negative light with the assumption that the thing being defended is not worth defending.

True. Log in to any discussion with Islamists and this is what happens......deflection, obfuscation, distraction, and playing the victim.

CSB - Muslim must blindly believe in his faith. He has to blindly believe in Allah as the creator God, Mohammad as the beloved prophet of Allah and Quran as the true messages from God. Any one questioning it is consider as blasphemy to his belief system and the person is allege as kafir and should be killed off.

Jeez, Abdullash Al Andalusi was insufferbly infuriating. He couldn't even a yes or no answer to a straight foward question, which quite frankly goes to show that we know what the answer ultimately was, and why Islamic apologists like him shouldn't be trusted.

Did you notice at the end when the lady(ex-muslim) said- "Mohammed is no longer prophet me"... Reply from the guy sitting on her left was- "It's that sort of approach that gets this debate into nasty". The debate was there and then.

Froggy Legs your reply speaks volumes about your tolerance. You refer to an ‘apostate’ with a negative inference and a ‘woman’ with a negative inference. Congratulations on highlighting the exact argument being had. In fact, why not stop the “apostate woman” talking altogether? I must admit though, she ought to cover up! She’s got the nerve to show her face and that’s terrible.
