The pattern calls for ties to hold it around the base of the tree. So you not use these or do you add them later?

Stephanie, does it matter how far into the fabric you make the firest 45 degree cut? I've only done this type of binding with a square of fabric but like that you can use a half yard cut to accomplish the same thing. Please advise, if possible, or any reader please. Thanks! Love your videos.
