I've been quilting for many years, made quite a few quilts, and I still so much enjoy your tutorials. There is always something new to learn and I'm happy to watch you teach us, you have a very special way of teaching. And yes, I have made mistakes along the way, and still do, but I love putting a quilt together. Makes a heart happy!

I just watched your first three quilting class and I LOVED IT! I am just learning to quilt and sew on a machine at the same time. I am being taught by three ladies in their late 80's and early 90's. Needless to say, it is a gift from God. I wanted to get on youtube just to see if I could get a good visual and found you. I have been feeling so overwhelmed between learning the quilting process and learning to sew on a machine. I liked what you said about "not stressing"......I want my quilting to be a healing and meditative experience. I will continue to watch you. Plus, I am a cat lover......

I've made dozens of quilts too, and perfection isn't the most important thing! You nailed it with your explanation. Thank you so much for that. Also, I was once told that the Amish intentionally make a mistake in their quilts because no one is perfect.

Melanie, it was so wonderful to hear your encouragement at the end of the video! As I watched, I could see that you were getting very passionate when sharing that this process is for fun, an outlet, and to ultimately become a blessing for ourselves and for those who we share it with. I really needed to hear that tonight! My quilt was getting the better of me and I really needed the reminder that I need to step back, relax, and enjoy that I am getting to create this and my son will love it no matter what! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) ♡ Oh yeah, I love it when your cat photo bombs your tutorials! Gotta love her! ;)

I just have to say that I am LOVING this series. I am working on my second quilt, but my first was with the help of my mom, so I feel like I'm a beginner myself! Hi Melanie, Helpful Tip: I used a yard stick to assist in reaching across the quilt back, batting & top to smooth out the layers when layering each piece. And I also use those knee protectors that carpet layers use to protect their knees, that way I can crawl on the floor and not have my knees hurt. Looks like you got kitties stamp of approval! lol

I'm lucky enough to have a large kitchen island that is perfect for basting smaller (crib sized) quilts, which is all I've had the guts to attempt so far. It took me a while to think of using it that way though. So here's a quick tip for beginners: think outside the box when deciding where to baste! You may have somewhere in your house that works better than the floor. Before we moved into this house I didn't have a hard surface big enough, so I had to go to my parents house to use their kitchen floor.

Hi Melanie. I’m enjoying your quilting videos. I am attempting my first machine quilting. One question I have that I can’t seem to find the answer to in any of the hundreds of videos about pin basting: Does one/should one plan out where to put the pins according to where they want to put quilting lines on? It sounds silly to say, but it seems like it needs to be mentioned in tutorials. I found myself pinning the heck out of my quilt, then it suddenly dawned on me that I potentially made things more difficult for myself for machine quilting because of the placement of the pins. Thanks!
@stitchwishes4999 жыл бұрын
Sulky makes a more eco friendly spray baste you can use i doors, that's the only one I've tried because I also want to minimize working with any chemicals. It dissipates in about a day, so you have to spray and get to work right away so it's better for smaller projects like table runners. Any overspray disappears too. I do like it for something quick and small like a mini quilt. I still prefer thread basting, I follow Sharon Shramber's instructions for that and it works best for me.

Hey Melanie I love all of your videos I have watched so far. I have a question about the quilt backing. I wanted to make sure is the back just one layer? I know you sewed it where you cut the salvage off but I was just a little confused because I couldn't see a full shot of how you pieced it together before sewing it. The confusion began when I thought you had the 2ft backing folded into quarters then cut the salvage. Please help! Thanks so much...
@MelanieHam9 жыл бұрын
Yes the back is 1 layer, if you see the back on the floor as I am taping it down, you will notice the seam going horizontally across. So for this project, it needs 2 yards on the top pieced with 2 yards on the bottom. That's for voile :) it would be different for different width fabrics

Though I've made a few quilts of various sizes and my MIL and SIL make tons of quilts - I've never heard fabric backing being called "the wall". I googled it and could't find anything. The 108" backings I found were generally made from cotton. I guess I learned something new today!

Melanie, viewed Parts 1 and 2 and thought Part 3 was going to show the actual sewing a beginner's quilt. I am a little disappointed that Part only spoke of laying the 3 layers and basting which you demonstrated in Part 2. 😕. Parts 1and 2 was very good and made me want to try. Now I need to find video to show me how to finish this project.

I am enjoying your videos since I am a new quilter. Your eyes are freaking me out though. Are those natural or do you have contacts in? They are beautiful.
@godsspecialchild866 жыл бұрын
Watching this video again. How do you keep your backing from not getting wrinkled? Every time I put baste my quilt with pins (just to keep the layers together, with no quilt design) on a carpet floor , the back is wrinkled. I try using masking tape to keep the backing on the floor, but they will come apart when putting on the batting/quilt top.
@nataliespeer89478 жыл бұрын
Do you wash your fabric first. I hate doing that but my MIL said I should always.
