The legendary, almost mythical pigment that is Quinacridone Gold, PO49.
This is the pigment in it's dry form and the process of it being hademade into a lovely watercolor paint.
* Note that the washes of the swatch are more vibrantly yellow in real life. *
It’s a shame it got discontinued but I’ve been lucky enough to still get my hands on some. The discontinuation and extinction of pigments is, unfortunately a reality. Whereas bigger industries than the art industry finds no use for it anymore, a pigment is taken out of production. Sometimes that’s because more stable and permanent alternatives are found of sometimes it’s even because of costs. A lot of pigments were taken out of (mass) production because of their toxicity. This is nowadays less common. Although cadmiums, manganese, cobalts and other modern pigments might be still more harmful than others, it’s not as pressing an issue as it was for some pigments in the past.
Most often, it's about the costs now, some mixes are just cheaper to get a hue very close to a single pigment. In the plastics or car paint industry, there's no use for pigment qualities that we love in watercolors. Mixes will just be as good there.
When it comes to these earthy Quinacridones, they're probably being all replaced by iron oxides over time.

I had stocked up many tubes of PO49 and packaged each one sealed separately with O2 absorbers. So far all are still soft. This is one of my favorite pigments, and the greens it makes do not compare with any other mixes. Nice job mulling this pigment. ENJOY...

I have some of this pigment and it gives mixes such a beautiful glow that I have not been able to replicate with any other pigment. The greens that are produced from PO49 are too die for.🤤 I'm really loving your content. And my favorite necklace is still my ultramarine blue pigment pendant that I bought from you last year. 😃 I'm excited to see what you have in store for the shop this year.

Periodically I search for quin gold videos on YT and today this video popped up. I came late to watercolors and so I discovered quin gold far to late to experience the original single pigment quin gold. I have the Daniel Smith two pigment quin gold but to see the original is still out there was very interesting. Thanks!

Glad you found my video! I think this pigment powder is of a different origin than that of DS. At least that's what I get back from people knowing their version (I don't have it myself)

I got one from a contact in Asia, I saw the same brand/mark/symbols on an AliExpress one which I ordered to see if it’s the same quality! Update on this soon!

Is this dry pigment sourced from Guerra or elsewhere? I have tried a paint made from the Guerra PO49 dispersion, which looks similar to your swatch. It seemed much less yellow compared to my W&N PO49. The W&N PO49 looks similar to DS PO48/PY150 hue, I haven't got DS PO49 to compare.

It’s not from Guerra, but it could very well be from the same DuPont batch they had. It is less yellow indeed, but still a great pigment and mixer!

I’ve read somewhere that the quin gold that Daniel Smith had was less of a burnt sienna and more like a very potent, bright and transparent gold ochre/raw sienna. I think it was Jane Blundell who said that. What do you think?

Theirs is overly bright “yellow” in comparison to others that I’ve seen, yes
