Schrade SCHF51&52 Good Knives, or just "good for the money"?

This is a review of the new Schrade SCHF51 and SCHF52 as well as the 51M and 52M.
These are the latest knives in Schrade's Frontier series.
They are all made with 1095 steel. The M variations use micarta handles, the other use TPE handles. Each comes with a ballistic nylon sheath, a ferro rod and a diamond sharpening stone.
The 51 series have an OAL of 10.85" with a blade length of 5.05" and a handle length of 5.97".
The 52 series knives have an OAL of 12.99" with a 7.04" blade and a 5.95" handle.

I haven't seen a negative review yet for this knife. Seems like a winner. I'm thinking of grabbing one for a 'one tool' option to save some hiking pack weight, and leave my saw and hatchet for car/canoe camping. Thanks for the review.

John, I'm highly impressed with these knives. They chop well out of proportion to their size due to the edge geometry and that hook at the end of the handle. I don't think you will be disappointed.

The 1095 steel from Schrade is heat treated in China, and it is real mistake from Schrade. I own the 51 and the 52, and I broke the tip of the blade on both. Sold as survival knives, they won't take care of you. In addition to that, the cutting edge was a total disaster. I had to reprofile it seriously. So if you want a real knife, go on internet and put your money into something that is worth it. I hesitate now between the BK2 and the Esee 5. Much more expensive but "built for a lifetime"... 😉

Got two for Christmas, one for Scott and one for myself., When I opened the box I was impressed with the overall balance, grip and weight of it. I'm glad there's no separations on the blade, never quite understood why a lot of manufactures started doing that, if you can't service the tool in the woods makes for more work, or having to carry a second blade. No need for anything heavier to process wood or build shelter, what else can be said for it. Good rough and tumble no nonsense sheath.maybe a longer separate pocket for a longer ferro rod. Seems like every knife now is coming with a ferro rod, most are more a novelty than a tool. If you're selling a brute of a knife, toss in a brute of a ferro rod too. I was looking at several other heavy knifes, 37 had my eye except for the finish then the reviews popped up on the 52 and the decision was easy, price point perfect. .

Great review. I've had a Schrade 36 for a couple of years now, and the improvements on the 52 fix the drawbacks that I found in the 36. When I recently mentioned to my oldest daughter, who has hiked and bushcrafted with me since she could walk steady, that I was going to buy one, she told me just to hold off and think about it for a bit. The barely perceptible smirk on her face gave away what I'm getting from her for Christmas this year. I've just recently come across your videos. You have a new sub. Keep 'em comin'!

I own the little brother which is a very solid blade. I've also beat the hell out of it and still cutting strong. After watching this video I now want to add this Bad Boy to my EDC gear. Great video. A lot of people like the big knifes, but I like the shorter ones. I use a hatchet for the heavy stuff. We are all different. I tend to abuse knifes so cost is very important. Some of the custom knifes would be hard for me to use much because of the cost.

Before I talk about the knife I'd like to say that I like your reviews and I think they're getting better and better as you become more practiced. I noticed you didn't say anything about the sheath but that's a relatively minor detail. I've been waiting and watching for these to come out because they look like a fun project to customize a little and seem considerably better than the Frontier series. I don't think it would take a rocket scientist to make a pair of grips for it and remove the coating Good Job!

I could easily make these reviews 30+ minutes but folks don't want to sit that long for a knife review. The sheath is what it is. It's adequate. It works, and unlike the Tops sheath the strap has a button! I figured most people would want info on the knife itself so that's where I concentrated my editing. These are PRIME candidates for modifying!

I have been impreby Schrade's F9, I've had it for a while now. Its not as good as my Tops, but it only cost a 1/3 of my Tops knife. The schf52 is definitely getting my attention! Nice review mike!

Schrade offers some really good knife designs but they have had some issues with their heat treatment in the past. If you get one that properly treated then you are good to go. I have the schf 51 and the schf 56L and I have properly thumped and thrashed on them both extensively with no problems. I mainly use them for hard use task that I don't want use my more expensive knives for and they have never let me down.

Great review! Honest and informative. I like how the smaller blades have real sized handles. Too often companies make a shorter blade, shorter handle. That never made sense to me. If you by a shorter blade, you hands don't get smaller! Good job Schrade!

Great review! I totally agree with you that the F52 feels more capable than the F51, however I think both are very solid knives. I loved my F37 and used it extensively for chopping and batoning, but the F52 is so much more comfortable in my hand and the J hook on the pommel makes chopping much less fatiguing. I tend to beat on my Schrade knives a good deal and they don't let me down. The F51 and F52 are outstanding improvements over their predecessors.

I happened to have my SCHF52 in my hand when I ran across this video. I think it is a great survival knife, a little heavy but built to last for generations if maintained. It is well suited for all those things shown in this video. Mine is extremely sharp and has a lanyard that I wrap either two or three times around my wrist depending on the task at hand. The model was based on a previous award winning model, and I think it is an improvement. Actually I was thinking of two improvements that would make the knife even better. Anyway years ago I sold Old Timer knives, a subsidiary of Schrade, and they were quite popular and had some great designs. I did a good bit of shopping around and for what I needed it surpassed anything in its class. My belief was that you would have to spend 50-200% more to find something better. Oh and buy the way one thing not mentioned in this video that I have used it for is vines and tall grasses. Because I keep it so sharp, and due to its length, and with the lanyard set properly, and because of the handles great design, I can hold the knife securely with three fingers which extends my reach even more. It's like a small machete. Overall I think it is a great knife for the price, and I am very happy with it. I even have an unboxing video of that and another of my favorite knives. I even have videos of me shaving a full beard with a knife. Keep sharp people.

Thanks for the review. I ordered mine from Wal-Mart. Just came in. My blade came razor sharp. The pouch is big enough for a Leatherman Wave plus the fire steel if you take the striker off. Or you could leave the striker dangling.

Excellent review. I have the schf36, and I love it. For the price, I will pick one of these up and have the choice of taking a heavy knife...or a real heavy knife. I am assuming there is a significant difference in weight, but that becomes pointless when one tool is simply more beneficial than another to carry. From what I have seen from my 36, the quality is certainly there. It's a solid piece of hardware that can last a lifetime. That 52 you prefer is a proper looking knife; the way you worked it briefly on this video. Probably my next blade purchase. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, these are great knives period. I have the SCHF37 that I stripped the coating, sanded the gimping, and love it. If I had waited now, I would go with the 52. I like it better than the BK7.

Very well done review. I personally like the micarta handle scales over the TPE. I hope to get some of the new models coming out. I wish they upgraded the 38 though... I like the looks of the bigger one over the smaller one. I'm glad you tested them so much before the video. I'd like to see if you modify them in any way. I appretiate your honesty. I actually asked the company VP about that and he said they decided not to include the 38 in the upgrade process because it just didn't sell as well as the other models. The micarta isn't bad after it's been sanded down.

OK I got the 52 TPE and at first I was a bit unsure but it has grown on me and I love chopping tent stakes and clearing branches its a workhorse. My only con is that the TPE feels a bit to thin just wish it had a little big of a palm swell, also the choil being a bit big but with gloves it feels great. I think I may have liked the Micarta grip better but that gives me a reason to get the 51m I just gotta have one. If you could I've asked other reviewers to hit Schrade up about offering their stock scales for people like me who would like to switch grips on a budget, they could make more $$$$ on knives they already sold us;) I love your reviews brother excellent info.

Great finger choil. I'm convinced that other than certain custom knife maker's products, the finger choil on these Schrade bushcraft knives is absolutely superior to everything else out there in that regard. I hate finger choils where the blade starts right at the edge of the choil. After working with the knife all day building a shelter or whatever, my hand gets worn out and normally articulate finger movements become less so. Therefore with a finger choil where the sharpness begins right at the edge there is a potential to screw up and cut yourself via unknowingly gripping the choil in the wrong spot. The Schrade Frontier series etc solve that problem by giving you that little dull space.

The reason IMO for knife manufacturers to start the edge of the blade right where choil stops is: A: They are looking to MAXIMIZE advertised length, while using the LEAST amount of material possible. (SAD, but true.) You add a 0.250 dull space, that detracts from total advertised blade length, which makes your product fall into the next lower "size" class. B: They are importers, See A above. C: They have no concept of what happens in the "Real-World". Anyone with 1/2 a brain who has USED a knife (Or any other tool) knows as you point out at the end of the day /cold weather "articulate finger movements" aren't happening and a injury is statistically a given if using a knife in which the edge of blade runs right up to choil. To me having the edge run right up to the choil is like positioning the On/OFF switch, or other control device right next to the blade of a band-saw. table-saw, circular saw... 100 ton stamping press. Stomp, Stomp, Stomp.... Oh no Bob got sucked into 100 ton press. Oh, About a month ago I met a guy who lost his arm that way. He said he was lucky he didn't get killed. D: Scenario D is fancy, dancy custom knife maker will run edge to choil, exhorting his products are "For Professionals", the "Highly Trained".... When in fact option A (See "A" above ) is alive and kicking. (Blanks/stock costs money and weird sized stock costs more.)

I agree 100% Schrade has made me a believer. In my large collection of really nice knives I own the SCHF 17 and the 9N. Both offer top quality and great bang for the buck. The 17 has that rough coating, yet it's still a beast in batoning and that Tanto point has several useful functions. And a good friend of my last year skinned and butchered an Elk with his 9N. Soooo...I'm still waiting...I want the 52 with the TPE grip. Same material as my 9N.....and I really like the material a lot. I just wish Schrade would finally get around to releasing these. I mean, we're damned near Nov already. I also like the fact that it comes with a diamond sharpener block and a ferro rod included. Just how in the hell does one beat that!!!??? Good review on great knives.

It was Chris Tanner who did a comparison between the the 9 and the 9N.....and while he feels the 9N was not as good at batoning as the 9, (which makes some sense when one looks at the 9 which is basically a chisel with an edge) he still preferred the 9N...as the 9N is a slight hollow grind and out performs the 9 in all other tasks. Again, thanks fr that info.

Just got my "52" and am very pleased. Personally I never put my tools nor toys to the extreme tests as you have done to this knife but it is good to know that should I neeed to ever go to extremes the knife will stand up and deliver. My wife and I are quite interested in outdoor survival things but it seems that there is little for folks in our age brackets, 65 and up. Still it is easy to believe that seniors could fall into circumstances of needing survival skills and equipment. Your thoughts please.

+Leslie S They are totally different knives. The mora is more designed for carving and making feather sticks and such. The Schrade is for chopping, batoning, and should be paired up with a mora or other small bushcraft knife.

Great video Mike. I always enjoy your perspective. Well thought out and reasonable. I may get a 51 and a 52 for slightly different uses. I'm thinking I'll get one in micarta and one in TPE, especially with the handles being the same I can swap them around and see which I like on what. +Eric Tilley if it's that small I think they might be hesitant to replace it. They do stand behind their products though. I would just work it out myself though if it's that small, I probably wouldn't do anything with it at all.

Yeah, that does make more sense. I already bought a lower priced replacement and the sheath on the new one is messed up because the pin that holds the plastic liner in the nylon sheath has pulled through the nylon and the liner comes out with the knife... so, just switched them and all is well. I'll fix the sheath later.

Say Heah, Yeah, I like a larger knife, Just incase, So, yeah, I multo carry a survival knife with a smaller knife for my finer tasks,. I still go to one of my Fav. 2Knife Carry, my Rodent 6/Rodent 3, Its been my Fav. for the last 2-3 years now and still going strong. Yeah, I put mine through some pages in that time. I like the idea you can show case two knives you can team-up together.,,.

Great video Mike, but I would love to see a review of the smaller version. Still haven't embraced the "large" knife concept. Grew up carrying an axe and probably always will so a knife that chops is not of importance to me at this stage of my outdoors experience. So any plans to try out the 51?

I understand that. I've tried the 51 and it's a very good knife. I just gravitated towards the 52. I'll spend some time with the 51 and see if there is a video worth making.

These last few I shot entirely on my iPhone 6S Plus and I'm so impressed with the video quality that I think I'm going to stick with it.

I have one ( schf52m ) yes sand it to your liking. love the knife - tool. want kidex for it but 60$ or so lol. looking for a good leather for it. some times you can buy a cheep knife and use the sheath. did it for the Mora and love it. 13 bucks throw away knife.. good day, keep sharp...

Hello Mike. I don't know whether it has been asked before or not. I hope not anyway. But how did you find that jimping on the SCHF-52?? Personally I really don't like it on my knives, but at the price offered, I can always fill it carefully with epoxy or something. My only concern is whether it gets uncomfortable or not. If it does, then sadly I shall have to give the 52 a miss. On another note. Where you said about the micarta handles giving a more substantial grip... If you prefer the weight and feel of the rubberised scales, why not just make some liners out of the sides of HDPE milk bottles or maybe a thicker plastic from an old gallon container and use them to bulk out the handle without overly increasing the weight? If the plastic is arced or curved, you can warm it in the oven and squeeze it gently flat between two pieces of wood. Don't overdo the heat though. Just a thought

Well, I'm not a big fan of jimping either and if I had my way this would not have any. As it is though, it's not a deal breaker for me. Going with the micarta all but eliminated the jimping and I know there are aftermarket places that will make scales however you want them. I'm not a big fan of Schrades micarta. It's just throws the balance off. I like the tpe scales.

52 micarta handle broke like glass simple batoning and it chipped right by bolt. Was doing a review and it snapped off. Please fix and make right Schrade!!

Nice technique you got there with that way you grab your fire rod Michael, Bad that i tok mine away:). Anyway, schrade must be the only company that listen to the customer what they like and how they can be better. Maybe it is a brand to check up more now when they have start to use better steel than the soft one from china that if you have serrations bend with hard use.
