to answer your question about whether or not cars have engines in the movie cars, theres a deleted scene where lightning mcqueen's engine is taken out of his body and placed into bessie (the machine that fixes the road). he essentially BECOMES bessie, transferring the engine from one vehicle to another is like transferring your SOUL and becoming that other vehicle. then mater puts HIS engine into mcqueen's body, gets picked up by mack who mistakes mater for lightning, and mater says "i always wanted to be a racecar driver" while smirking evilly. MATER STEALS LIGHTNING'S LIFE. so yeah, they have (or had) engines.
