It's funny that you discuss Maya, because in Germany it's so popular that the German Dub of Bee Movie actually references her. When the main character bee (Benny? I forget) first sees the humans selling honey, he exclaims "What in the name of Maya and Willie is this?!" Which is pretty much the favorite joke in the movie of everyone I ever talked to

I LOVED Maya the Bee anime back in the early to mid-1980s, and I know there was at least 1 other show out there (I guess that's the 2012 one Anti-Aira mentioned). They may have made the MtB Movie to cash in on the "bee craze," but it certainly isn't a rip-off of Bee Movie.

Maya is not a knockoff. It's a very popular TV show in Germany. It's based on a novel from 1912, the first movie is from 1926, and this movie is based on a TV show from 1975 with modernized animation for today's audiences. If anything, the title might be deliberately misleading to sell the movie to a foreign market, but I have fond memories of watching the 1975 show as a kid.

@@potmeetkettle I imagine it'd be a lot like the process for how they give the ratings for movies, though I feel it would be one of those things you'd have to file with a lawyer for before it'd be determined on if it's a knock off. Though I can see any law like that being abused very hard especially by bigger companies. The easiest way I can see for knock off movie things to be avoided is to have a bar that a movie has to reach before you're allowed to charge money for it quality wise. Though that would have it's own set of problems.

"Biene Maya" Or "Maya the Bee" was a popular cartoon in Germany that I watched when I was young. (I was born in slovakia in 2004 and watched at around 4-8 years old.) It's been around much longer than the Bee Movie, the only difference is that it is not computer animation but drawn animation. (The newer series uses computer animation whilst the older series is drawn)

Maya the Bee is just the smoothest translation of "Biene Maja", which was the German title of the anime series, I mean " Bee Maya" sounds kinda clumsy, doesn't it? Also, the anime series has been highly popular in Germany for decades and at some point, somebody who's holding the right here decided it was a goooood idea to to reboot the series in 3D which most of us who aren't kids hate (it's some kind of natural law, isn't it?). There were also several Japanese/German co-productions back then, like Wickie or Heidi (and also got the horrible 3D treatment, in 2014 and 2015 btw), it's nothing odd or special at all. These shows were the first encounters with anime for Germans who grew up in the 80s or 90s. The "Biene Maja" movie also was a German/Australian co-production, another hint that they didn't have the Seinfeld movie in mind, but to milk the popularity of the old anime series even further. "Biene Maja" just targets the taste of the German audience, based on the popularity and the strong feelings of nostalgia of those adults who watched it when we were younger, just like most other popular anime series got a German-produced movie (animated or live action) sooner or later. Honestly, the only similarities are the word Bee in a short title and that both movies have a bee as a main character, historical and cultural context disqualify it as a knock-off.

The old maya the bee was very popular here in austria even until the early to mid 2000. I don't know what it is, but the new maya is just missing something that made the old maya so appealing to me when I was a little child.

I know what it is! It missed the life-threatening situations every character goes through. From willy being frozen alive in an ice-cube to the massive forest fire that almost killed some snail kids with their mother willing to let herself be eaten by a spider so the spider can let the snail kids through her net and survive the fire. Sorry for being an entomology nerd, but worker bees (honey bees, that is) actually do have different roles. Instead of each bee having a different role, their roles change with age. Younger workers feed larvae and make honey. Older workers leave the hive to collect pollen and nectar. Some bees also remove dead bees from the hive to prevent the spread of disease.

That's where you're wrong, kiddo. Bees have small "buckets"on their hind legs, which are used to specifically transport pollen into hive. There, it's specially fermented and mixed with other substances in order to create beebread or simply bee pollen. It's actually main source of food for larvae and mother queen, and it can even be gathered in a similar fashion to honey.

My parents grew up watching Maya the bee in former Yugoslavia, and I remember how stoked they were when they found a video cassete of the cartoon in a local store. We all enjoyed watching those episodes of Maya the bee together. It's one of my favourite memories. No Nazi-propaganda whatsoever. I remember playing Maya the Bee on the GameBoy Advance when I was a kid and when Bee Movie came out I went on an angry rant that it was just trying to be as cool as Maya the Bee, only to discover that no one else knew or cared about Maya the Bee.
