Time Lords aren't immortal. There is a Thirteen regenerations limit
@Moggetslittlesister6 жыл бұрын
I friggin loved basically all of Capaldi's run so of course I also loved Twice Upon a Time. I hadn't really thought how the previous two regeneration stories were really wrapped up in continuity and were forced to wrap everything up and slap a regeneration on top. Whereas here I went and saw Twice Upon a Time in the theater with two of my friends who had seen none of Capaldi's run, and they were able to really enjoy it with only an explanation of who all the companions where just in case they showed up. That would not be possible at all with Tennant's and Smith's regenerations. In this instance, the regeneration alone is enough to carry the story, which is nice.

I would lean heavily towards agreeing with you (on the Moffat hate front)... but much of the criticism directed at Moffat is not just for Doctor Who, but also the other travesties of writing he has penned. *side eyes later series of Sherlock*

About damn time someone actually reviewed the damn thing instead of spouting off nonsense about political and sexist bullshit that ultimately means nothing to the show its self! Thank you so much, Quinton. This was all i needed
@GreenSharder6 жыл бұрын
Well that depends what you mean by “sexist bullshit”. If you mean people saying the doctor can’t be a woman, they aren’t correct, there was never anything saying a regeneration couldn’t change their gender. Regeneration was sort of an in the moment decision. It wasn’t something that was ever supposed to even happen. The producers were worried the first doctor was too old, how do they fix it, new body, new actor. However, calling that sexist is disingenuous. This is something new and sometimes new things can be scary. If you’re on the end of the political spectrum that is calling people sexist, imagine if stuff like The Gems became confirmed as men, or the actor of Harry Potter or Sherlock became a menist. It would undoubtedly be difficult to accept, especially if those people openly wanted to insert their politics into the show. And that’s what’s happening here. It’s changing an established character, and warping these beloved moments by overshadowing them with a blob of bringing the real world unnecessarily into an reality that has been used for escapism. And that’s not what Doctor Who is about. I mean, the last series in my opinion was utter rubbish because of this. We had a ham fisted lesbian romance with Bill and whatshername because the people writing the show wanted to show that they were in support of lesbianism and it left a bad taste in my mouth that they had created a character just for that. Because apart from the last 2 episodes, Bill was the blandest character possible. All I can tell you about Bill is her age, her gender, and her sex because anything else is forgettable or not established. Hell, I can tell you more about the characters that featured in one episode, because they have to have a motivation in order to establish the episode. And this isn’t about women, because we had the Sarah Jane Adventures, which was basically a female doctor who, and that was good, and had a high audience and critical reception. It’s about motive. Yes you could make the doctor female, but why? There isn’t any need to. It could even backfire so horribly, that we never get a good female doctor because it was done so poorly. You might even make everyday people anti-feminists because you ruin the show by inserting feminism. How can you not see that you are just being a detriment to your cause And a detriment to other people, by inserting something from the real world into fiction? Have you forgotten the massive sub count Sargon and all them got from gamergate when they did this with games? You are shooting yourselves in the foot to the point where you have the president of the biggest western powerhouse openly denouncing you.
@ShawnsLegacy6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with that. When i said i'm glad to see someone review this without bringing up political and sexist bullshit, i was actually referring to the BS the show tends to spew most of the time. Like, for example, the numerous times that Bill and Clara took jabs at men, or the several occasions the doctor went out of his way to bring up Donald Trump and political issues in general that ultimately boiled down to "hey, we don't like that thing! stop doing that thing, pretty please~" In all honesty, those issues have been brought to light plenty of times. I've seen them time and time again, and i animatedly despise the direction the show took ever since season 5. And that's why this review is something i really needed out of the doctor who community. I've heard the same opinions and critiques repeated over and over again, and seeing someone with a different perspective and a unique way of looking at the show is just... Refreshing. Like i said, i really don't like the direction the show took ever since season 5. It was just too damn goofy for my taste. But hearing nothing but the exact same opinion i hold being repeated ad nauseum is just, for lack of a better word, toxic. I'm not one to pick sides, especially when it comes to issues of current year. In all honesty, i find both sides to be just as stupid in their own ways. And doctor who was a way to escape for abit and stop having to hear all that crap. So, seeing someone review an episode like this on its own merit rather than bringing up issues with previous episodes just kinda remind me of the good'ol days of the show, i guess.
@GreenSharder6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Pretty much. It wasn’t just Bill and Clara either. Any Time Lord that regenerated was instantly said something that boiled down to “Aren’t men arrogant and stupid lol, so glad I’m a woman now.” It’s really annoying too, because it’s something me and my dad watched when I was a kid, and the only thing we still watch together now, and it’s started pandering to this new audience of far left women and killing off it’s male audience, exactly the same as when it started pandering to the casual U.S. audience with the way too hyper, lowest common denominator humour with the eleventh doctor’s series, all the way through to the second to last series, after which he got a solid less irritating and more British personality, at which point, they killed him off, which has been a pattern recently. Even David Tennant, who got a long period of time as the Doctor, didn’t actually have enough episodes to create a lot of interesting scenarios after they properly established his character. They still got pretty lucky because the first episode was fucking astounding and they managed to almost instantly create his groundwork with the help of David Tennants acting. But we’re at the point where I don’t even know if there’s ever going to be another astounding Doctor. I fear it’s caught a sort of Simpson’s illness where it’s constantly stabs itself in the foot because it takes too many risks after having had such a critically successful series and frankly not being able to live up to it. I mean, unless the BBC funnels a ton of money into it, I just don’t know if it’s possible.
@ShawnsLegacy6 жыл бұрын
Actually, i don't think the problem with the series as it is now is that it's taking too many risks. Quite the contrary. You see, i'm willing to bet that that group of dudes in that small room over at BBC HQ saw all the feminists and SJW's meandering around and thought "hey, that's a big crowd of morons! let's get alittle of their money, ey?" And thus, the current problem we're facing. As for the whole pandering to the American audience problem that Matt Smith's era had, i think that was due to how well it did when the David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston era's aired on the SyFy network
@GreenSharder6 жыл бұрын
I feel like strangely enough you could apply the same reasons Dr. Who is failing to the reasons Canada is failing, only Canada is less important outside of Canada. And by taking risks I meant moving away from the source material to find a new audience, not actually taking risks with the story, but taking risks by dumbing it down to a lower audience for the majority of the eleventh doctors stories and imposing more of an arc where there only needs to be a few. Like how you need to see every episode to understand the situation, which happened less back in the day because of on demand, and even with David Tennant they had fewer, despite having one story over multiple episodes. I guess that’s more the fault of the liberties on demand television allows though.

I think the idea that the moff being a good writer but does not do well as showrunner as he does well in single episodes rather than running multiple series, if you have not seen the "who cares" series by unpopular culture i would reccomend it
@QuintonReviews6 жыл бұрын
I really disagree tho. I think a lot of his runs have been really strong. And they've frankly aged more than the RTD stuff. Sure, some stuff is bad, but it's much more complex than "He's bad at all of x and good at all of y."
@SinOfPhish6 жыл бұрын
I am curious if you have watched any of Moffat's other works, because I hold a similar opinion to the person you replied to. It is important to note that Moffat is not the "end-all-be-all" for the episodes/shows he writes for. He is part of a team of writers, and that collaboration helps him refine his ideas. However, even with that in mind, I would still say there is a noticeable difference between him show-running and writing for single episodes. In the long form, there are plot points that tend to be established well but then lag behind or just dropped in at odd times and wrap up abruptly. It feels like a lack of focus or just a rushed payoff to these kinds of story threads (loose or otherwise). His work on the one-off episodes feel more cohesive and better handled within the context of the episode(s) and wider plot. Perhaps the time constraints and/or limited budgets (on a single episode) allow him narrow the scope of the writing and really solidify interesting concepts and not get "carried away". I will agree he has his ups and downs, and that the "x to y" summation is a hasty generalization people use against him, but I really do think he does his best work in the short form, and more constantly too, when compared to the long form.

None of ur' Business m8 I agree. Moffat's main problem was him trying to set up multiple series long mysteries. "Who is Riversong?" "Why are there cracks in the universe?" "Who are the silence?" "What is Trenzalore?". He sets up too many mysteries and ends up making unfulfilling conclusions. This problem wouldn't exist if he just wrote episodes and wasn't a showrunner.
@tealyg996 жыл бұрын
Moffat is responsible for both my favourite and least favourite series of the revival of doctor who, series 9 and series 7 respectively. He has his flaws as a show runner, mostly stemming from season long arcs that went nowhere, were left to speculation (such as the hybrid in series 9 which along with sleep no more are my two least favourite parts of that series) or were disappointing. That being said as a script writer he is my favourite, heaven sent, even from Moffat haters, is considered to be one of, if not the best episode of the series as a whole, personally it’s my favourite revival story and 3rd favourite story behind the enemy of the world and the caves of androzani. He, along with the actor himself, managed to turn my scepticism of the casting of capaldi into one of sheer gratitude, he’s my favourite revival doctor now, and as a whole is only outclassed by troughton. I’m gonna miss him and I hope he writes again for the series in the future, Chris has some massive shoes to fill and his previous episodes, unlike Steven’s before taking over, aren’t considered classics.. I barely remember dinosaurs on a spaceship or 42. However if he can write with the same emotional depth as he did in Pond Life then I will be very happy indeed.

Classic Doctor Who from the 3rd doctor onwards there are complete seasons So "spearhead from space" Starts Jon Pertwee and he went for 4 years, "Robots" Start Tom Baker, he went for 7, for classic who, he is considered by many as the master, the one all others try to be, and and all of his seasons would be a good start. Castrovalva started Peter Davison he went for 3 years and has the 5 Doctors special that has all the doctors of that time together solving a puzzle, that's a good one. Twin delemas is Colin Baker's, he only had 2 years but he has had the longest running story arc in a14 parter trial of a time lord. The Classic era finished with Slyvester McCoy, he went for three years, a was slightly goofy with a decidedly dark side when needed. The first 2 doctors, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton have 50 stories between them because of their age, not all are available now, about 12 are missing. But the very first story, an Unearthly Child ,is available, as is :the tenth Planet" important as it is the very first regeneration, and Day of the Darleks the first story of Troughtons. Without these 2 stories who would have never worked. Take a look.

Just watched the Christmas special. I liked it. Cheesy per usual but I'm always up for a new doctor and the way they take things.

That Steven Moffat has written some bad stories, agreed. Hell Bent for example, wasn't what I hoped it would be and even though it had some elements I liked, it did dissapoint me. But that Moffat can't write good episodes is bullshit. I mean, look at the meeting between 12 and Davros. That was a great moment and brilliant. And many other stories from both the Capaldi and Smith era, are wonderful. I am also glad you don't focus too much on the First Doctor's sexist comments, as that is not what the episode is about, which I''ve had endless discussions about with people, telling them there is more to focus on than that, like the beautiful shot of the First Doctor going back inside his TARDIS while the sun rises in the background or the little moment he talks about leaving Gallifrey. Beautiful moments and most of it, I would say, is a nice tribute to Hartnell. Not all of it, but most of it.

tie of tje doctor still my favourite, even though i know its flawed beyond belief, the connection i have with matt smith doctor, which was what really mattered in the end, was executed perfectly with his last scene and the doctors motivation.

Have you seen An Adventure in Space and Time with Bradley Walsh as William Hartnell. That was great.

I'm pretty sure the set of the original TARDIS comes from the 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time ^^

Anonymity I am using to my advantage, so I'm sorry about that. You make good shit, man, don't let my triggered opinion even slightly convince you otherwise. You're a talented man, it's why we all stick around even when we disagree and flame unnecessarily. You be as rude as you like

I think Twice Upon a Time is a solid episode overall. I like it's style, its pacing and a good number of the themes it tries to hit on. I found myself unusually connected and invested in the soldier character and I really liked Gatiss' performance. Some of the effects were pretty dodgy and the Dalek section felt a little out of place, but those are moreso small missteps than anything else. On the subject of Moffat I find myself oddly torn. I admire a lot of his scripts he wrote under Russel T Davies' tenure. The Lonely Child arc and Blink are probably some of the best episodes that Who's ever had. And even with him as head writer, more recently, he made Heaven Sent, an amazing piece of television that exploits Capaldi's capturing performance even when completely alone. That being said, Moffat seems to have generally adopted a more confusing and less engaging style of writing since he became show runner. So many of his plots seem needlessly complicated just to be complicated and spend so much time of exposition that it's difficult to invest in anything else. Characters feel poorly developed, especially those for one off episodes, there's still some characters that hit moments but they're fewer and further between than I'd like. Do I think he's out of steam? Maybe. Season 10 was largely fine to good for me, maybe a 6/10 (which is good considering). And although I might feel some relief at seeing him go and getting an entirely new Doctor (I don't mind it being a her now) and a Head Writer it's also undeniable just how much he's contributed to the success of the show in modern day. Under his tenure Doctor Who became much much bigger overseas (outside of the UK) where previously it had very rarely expanded beyond the shores.

I honestly think David Bradley looks nothing like William hartnell and the doctor falls made me bawl my eyes out so much that every time I thought about some parts that. I couldn't sleep from constant sobbing and my hair got stuck to my face I just kept hugging my TARDIS pillow

I don’t know why people are so critical of Moffat but love Russel T Davies. They both had the same flaw IMO: great at the start, then the episodes got weaker. At least they both had reasonably good episodes ending their respective eras.

I'm pretty sure that in the novel version of this story it says that the 1st doctors sexist remarks were a way yo make The Captain feel more comfortable with everything that was happening around him. Don't know if that's true as I haven't read it yet but I accept that as what happened. It feels a lot more in character for 1

Couldn't agree with you more about Steven Moffat. He has a couple issues with his writing, but so did Russell T Davies, to be fair.

I haven't watched any new Doctor Who since 2016. Some day, I should pick it back up where I left off. It's always fun to watch. Likewise, I need to seek out some more of the Tom Baker episodes, as I've loved every one I've seen.
