Jan Hooks is honestly one of the funniest sketch comedy artists ever. Her ability to deadpan and NOT BREAK when working with God's of the absurd like Hartman, lovitz and Myers is just phenomenal.

Someone that has gotten accolades for their ability to be the straight man is David spade. Him and Jan are neck and neck as best straight players in SNL history.

this is the sketch that was supposed to be part of the cold opening of the first show of 1987. In the dress rehearsal this was the cold opening, however, church lady and her "isn't that special" drew huge laughs and that got promoted to the cold opening. This was supposed to be Dana Carvey's first sketch in SNL

First show of 1987? What do you mean by that? January? Description says this aired in October 1986. I'm wondering if this was the first episode of the 86-87 season and that's what you meant. 86-87 was when SNL became great again with Dana and Phil and Jan and Kevin and everyone. I was in 2nd grade

The score podiums must have been taken out of storage for this. I say that because they look the kind that were used for game shows taped at NBC in the late 60s/early 70s. "Three on a Match" is the first that comes to mind.

Yikes! They made that meteor strike look a little too good. Even if it was paper mache it had to be fairly heavy. Hope Jan was OK. Underrated actress. Very missed

I've heard from other sources evidently it was papier-mâché and foam covering a large helium-filled balloon, so it was actually incredibly lightweight and soft and Jan was just doing an amazing pratfall, pantomime and physical comedy she learned from the Groundlings Troupe. Cocaine and weed was tolerated, nay, encouraged. It was the '80s. Stuff was given away as party favors. Now that weed has been legalized in NYC maybe the newer batch of writers will be funnier? They still need to give them coke, though. Not 1987 levels of coke, say the occasional 1993 snooter-doodle or so.
