Even my ethics/film teacher shared this film, during my senior year in High School. Since I knew I loved certain game shows, I knew this movie had to suit me, even though most of it wasn’t entirely true to reality (the late Herbert Stempel never actually had a son named Lester, but a son named Harvey).

Best line may be "You're worse than Enright!" when Goodwyn won't stop coaching him on every detail of the performance. It shows how similar the government is to the entertainment industry, and in his desire for success, Goodwyn (ironically named, isn't he?) is in fact somewhat like Enright. Both are ambitious Jews who sort of look up to the WASP establishment that hjas the real power, and feel they have to protect and defer to them. At the end, Goodwyn realizes that Charlie isn't worth admiring or protecting, whereas earlier he romanticized their genteel aristocratic and cultured way of life. But all that was implied in Tuturro's line "You're worse than Enright!" which makes him confront for the first time how similar they actually are. It's an incredibly brilliant and subtle story, almost Shakespearean. For example, the Goodwyn-Enright relationship has certain parallels in the relationship between elder and younger van Doren, where each has to come to terms with idealization, rivalry, and very uncomfortable self-examination leading to painful but real growth.
@zapdunga129 ай бұрын
He was but the real Herb Stemple was nothing like the way Tuturro portrayed him.
@chrisfinch86376 ай бұрын
@@zapdunga12When the Television Academy interviewed the real Herbert Stempel, he admitted that he was a little “miffed” by the portrayal, since he was displayed as a nerd, over the top, and as an egotistical kind of guy. When Turturro saw him at the premiere for the film, he didn’t mind if Stempel “punched him” in the nose, for his portrayal, but since Stempel knew that he was classified as an actor, and Turturro was told by director Robert Redford, to play him that sort of way, he didn’t want to make matters worse, and just played along, and told Turturro that “No, John, everything is cool.”, even though Stempel’s real wife, wanted to get in on the action.

The big fraud was the very product the fraudulent game show was pushing: Geritol's claims were discredited in court findings as "conduct amounted to gross negligence and bordered on recklessness," ruled as a false and misleading claim, and heavily penalized with fines totaling $812,000 ($4,335,739 in 2015 dollars),[7] the largest FTC fine up to that date (1973) It also had as much alcohol as wine.

Bit of a time warp at the beginning. The events the film dramatizes took place from late 1956 to 1958. The song Mack the Knife during the opening credits was recorded by Bobby Darin and released in August, 1959.
The superimposing of two renditions of Berthold Brecht's "Mack the Knife" -- the (translation of the) brutal original to end the movie, vs the happy-go-lucky remake to start the movie -- is pure, artistic genius.
