Quotations from Queen Lil`'uokalani of Hawai'i, taken mostly from her autobiography, "Hawai`i's Story by Hawai`i's Queen". Music by Palolo. The song is "Makalapua", a song that originally was a name chant that pays tribute to Queen Lili'uokalani.
Other info:
Queen Lili'uokalani was born at Pu'uowaina (Punchbowl), Honolulu in 1838. She was then adopted (as was the custom) and known as "Lydia Lili'u Kamaka'eha Pākī".
Her brother Kalākaua was elected to the Hawaiian throne in 1874 and in 1877 became Crown Princess Lili'uokalani. Lili'uokalani became her regnal name.
In 1891, she ascended the throne of Hawai'i after the death of brother.
On January 17, 1893, American expatriates with the help of the American ambassador to Hawai'i and American troops deposed the Queen after she adopted to amend the then existing Hawaiian constitution that would have excluded Americans and Europeans citizens from voting in Hawai'i. On February 1, the US declared Hawai'i to be a protectorate under the US. In 1895, Hawaiian nationalists attempted to restore the Queen to power. The revolt failed and Queen Lili'uokalani was imprisoned at her former palace. In 1898, Hawai'i was joined to the US as an overseas territory of the US along with the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico through a resolution of the US Congress. Until the Queen's death in 1917, she continued to protest against the US.
In 1993, US President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-150 which apologized on behalf of the US for its role in the regime change in Hawai'i a hundred years earlier.

Dear Hokulani, I went to Google looking for quotes from Her Hawaiian Majesty (I wanted to add one to my signature selections on my gmail account) and I was deeply moved by your work here. The quotations are splendid. I ended up using the last one about gaining the Kingdom of Heaven. I just linked my KZbin account to my Gmail so maybe I will be notified if you reply to this. Me ke aloha pumehana, Mike (kokuaguy)
