Qur’anic Understanding of “Jew” H-W-D | PART 1

وَقَالَتِ ٱلۡیَهُودُ عُزَیۡرٌ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلۡمَسِیحُ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِۖ ذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ قَوۡلُهُم بِأَفۡوَ ٰ⁠هِهِمۡۖ یُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ﴿ ٣٠ ﴾
• Sahih International:
The Yahood say, "Osiris son of Allah "; and The Nesaara say, "The Messiah son of Allah ." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. Allah destroys them; how are they deluded?
At-Tawbah, Ayah 30
ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَحۡبَارَهُمۡ وَرُهۡبَـٰنَهُمۡ أَرۡبَابࣰا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَسِیحَ ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ وَمَاۤ أُمِرُوۤا۟ إِلَّا لِیَعۡبُدُوۤا۟ إِلَـٰهࣰا وَ ٰ⁠حِدࣰاۖ لَّاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ﴿ ٣١ ﴾
• Sahih International:
They [The Yahood and The Nesaara]have taken their AHBAAR and RUHBAAN as lords besides Allah, AND [also] The Messiah son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship ONE God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

Allah's statement shouldn't be occupied by mans religion, I think these names such as Yahûd , Nasārā , Sabiyan and Majus are all variables of epitome that exist in all conscious beings.

With the conventional understanding of the Terms "yahud" "Nasara" "Bani Israil" "Al Kitab" "Deen", and many others, the cognitive dissonance I experience while contemplating the Quran is excruciatingly uncomfortable. If it was not for the light that Allah s.w.t has put inside us, we would never be able to notice something fishy is going on here with our religions.

Like Muhammad shaikh said, Hud and Nasara are both personalities/characteristics of humanity even within Islam. I also thought that the original Yahud were the people of Hud. Allah knows best.

My take as far as bani Israel are the people Who will obeys the representatives of Allah which is the messages that were sent time to time and yaud or nasara are the characteristics of disbelievers and they can exist even today in Muslims land or those are born Muslims. Back then those people didn’t obey the message are like today’s most Muslims are saying for example, it’s okay to not refrain myself or one self from usury/mortgage because the whole system is built around it. Or it’s okay to eat haram or make haram income. These people are like yahud and nasara back then that don have full faith in Allah or don have IMaaan. And they don believe in Allah or meeting with HIM one on one on that day (the day of judgement). They believe this book is from Allah (Allah’s words)but they do not believe what’s is written in the book and most do not read or they do not understand what they read! Believers are ones who summits themselves to the will of Allah sura 43:69

@@solaqurana if you tract when the word Bani Israel first mentioned in the Quran? It's a label Musa used. He was instructed to move in secret(Isra') with them .

Ever since I read the verse, "The Yahud say, Uzair is the son of Allah" and "The Yahud say 'Allah's hand is tied up'", I can not get these verses out of my head. What strange and interesting verses. I am certain beyond doubt the Yahud of Quran, in no way, describe the Jews of today. If we are to take Uzair as Osiris, then it is interesting to note that Osiris is also considered the god of resurrection and immortality, which is similar to Jesus' function as he is also believed to have been resurrected after his death. In any case, this is a very important topic because in Islamic sources (Hadith), jews are presented in a very bad light, and they are the enemies in eschatological literature. It would be a shame to have misunderstood the term Yahud and end up identifying the wrong enemy.

I guess I’m just a bit confused here. Because sure we can argue over translations- but the evidence the Quran is speaking of the Jews isn’t just the term itself right? I mean doesn’t the Quran also mention Abraham and Moses and reverence for previous prophets and revelations. Also it’s constantly grouping the ‘jews’ and the ‘Christians’ together. And the Qurans mention of ‘eissa’ corresponds largely with Jesus because it also mentions his being born of Mary and being the messiah and being crucified and attributes trinitarian worship to his followers- which is a pretty historically unique idea (three in one. A monotheistic religion that claims a single deity expressed in three persons or hypostases). And if it’s grouping Christians AND Jews togerher- I mean Jesus was a devout jew from a very homogenous and ancient Jewish community. So doesn’t one go with the other? If there’s smoke there’s fire type deal. So I understand what you’re saying. But it seems there’s a great deal of supplemental evidence in the Quran that establishes its speaking about the historic Jewish faith/population and gods covenant with Israel. Are you suggesting that the historical Jews aren’t the ‘true’ Jews mentioned in the Quran? If so… I mean who would be the ‘true’ Jews. There seems to be only three abrahamic faith systems. There are obviously many subdivisions within Judaism. But I don’t see how it could be suggested the Quran isn’t speaking about the Jews (translation issue aside). If you take the ayats that mention them in a holistic sense it seems to very strongly imply it’s speaking about a nation (Israel) that had a covenant with god and were descended from Abraham, with references to various Jewish prophets (like Moses and ishmael and David etc.) I mean it seems to be a pretty glaring and unique claim- very specifically referencing a unique people….and the Jews line up with the description…a lot. In other words- if I’m describing someone whose name is David but I use the name Naveed or something- BUT I say they were born in Santa Monica in 1996 and their fathers name was Steve and they have a scar over their left eye and they had red hair and were 6’2 and they had a stutter and they were a very successful accountant and died tragically in a storm during a transatlantic journey in 2020 aboard the SS something. - odds are I’m speaking about David- even if I use not quite the correct term.
