No, it's not from a movie - this couple really did rig their farmhouse with a shotgun door trap. And a burglar really triggered it!
"Katko v. Briney, 183 N.W.2d 657 (Iowa 1971), was a court case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, in which two homeowners (Edward and Bertha Briney) were held liable for battery for injuries caused to a trespasser (Marvin Katko) who set off a spring gun set as a mantrap in an abandoned house on the homeowners’ property."

When the Pirate-Homedefense bit started, i first thought it was this copypasta: Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

(I would feel bad if he didn't get his money's worth.) Than to die by, oh I don't know, some old man cornering me and my buddy and shooting us down, while we try to escape, and then lay there dying while he shoots a second time to make sure im dead. Then letting my rot for a day or so before reporting it to the cops. So yeah, I'll go with Death by inventive and creative psycho pirate, over, Disgruntled old retired Vet, who still has an urge to kill, remorseless. Sign me up for the Pirate House!!!

The opposite also exists, apparently if I remember correctly some where in the US there is something called the “Castle” law(or something like that don’t remember the exact name since it’s been years since I thought about the case), where basically it states that your home is your “castle” and you have a right to protect it from any trespassers. Which has sparked many debates since shit loads of robber have been killed because of said law, one notably, one guy got done in by a single mother with a baby and she shot the motherfuker with a shot gun right when he broke through the door, and she was protected by the law.

A number of years back down around I think Ft. Myers a man told his girlfriend that he was going to a certain neighborhood to case houses for later robbery. He was spotted in the neighborhood and the police were called so he fled into the kind of swampy pond filled area behind the neighborhood where the police heard a lot of commotion but couldn't determine what was going on. Later, when he didn't return home, his girlfriend called the police and admitted that he had gone to scout out potential burglary locations but had never come back. When the police got a hold of this information they put two and two together and realized what must have happened. When daylight broke they searched the area with wildlife trappers and found a particularly large alligator along with all the evidence they needed to determine what had happened to him. *Edited to give a heads up!* This comment turned out to be about 10 times longer than I had intended. Sorry about that. So, if you are one of those people who don't like comments more than 3 or 4 sentences, at max, you can skip over this. I won't mind. If no one reads it, that's okay, too. It just gives suggestions and advice on how to help reduce the number of people from burglarized your car and vehicles, if not fully stop them from doing so. Also, I'm curious to see what anyone would have to say on this idea, and what they thing about it. Is it a terrible idea? Useless? Good? Does it have potential? Any other thoughts or suggestions on the matter? Thanks in advance. (If anyone does respond, let alone read all of it.) Lol, so OP's comment kind of reminded me of ways to keep people from breaking into your car. If you keep your car filthy; such as, full of old fast food bags, speeding tickets you've no intentions of paying, maybe some old divorce papers strewn in the back seat, a few pints of transmission fluid and motor oil, (preferably leaking slightly, or with some smudged all over the bottle.) And a few loose baby diapers (not dirty, as thats just not necessary. Too far, man.) Maybe some old changes of clothes or something, and whatever other crap (preferably non perishable, as you don't want to have to suffer the reek.) then any kind of car jacker, or their who is looking for anything of value, won't want to waste their time digging through all that, and will likely assume there isn't anything worth stealing! Strangely enough, police actually recommend you leave your windows down and/or your car doors unlocked, if you are in an area where car thefts and burglaries are a prominent issue. One reason, because the thrives won't have to break your window to search your car, (save you the cost and time of replacing the windows.) AND because a lot of thrives assume that if anything is worth stealing, it would be kept locked up and safe, as much as possible. So there is some logic to it, really. Oh! As for the garbage strewn about, you can just keep a bag of random loose papers and junk, then dump them in your back seat and passenger side floor and seat, then put them all back in the bag when you're ready to leave! Takes a minute or two to clean up, but its made a difference for me and a couple of my friends, at least. We live in a car burglary area, and my car was burgled 3 times in 2 months. (And an average of 3-5 times a year.) After that, I started doing these things, and my car hasn't been messed with once, in the past 3 years! Not really related to the video topic directly. But, I thought someone might take interest in it. Hopefully it can help someone else out there, who is subjected to regular car burglaries.

I’m not going to come back here but I’m just gonna say this. Many people who want gun control don’t necessarily want all guns gone but rather better safety laws and education especially for people who should be supervised while having a firearm, like kids and teens, and those who should not own them due to things like mental instability. I don’t mind people owning a rifle or two for hunting or perhaps a small handgun. Many school shootings happen because a kid is allowed access to their parent’s firearms and either haven’t been properly trained with it or they go about to actually cause harm. Also many people see a gun as a way of defense but either the proper safety measures needed would be too much of a hassle or others could get caught in the crossfire

I was told by a Chinese roommate once that they have a saying there in relation to running over someone with your car which translates to "Back-and-forth". This stems from the fact if you run over someone and they live you are responsible for their medical bills which could be quite costly, yet if they die then there is a maximum amount that their family may sue for which could be less than the medical bills. Therefore if you ever run over someone then you would put it in reverse to ensure a lesser payment!

Hey man, I'm studying law in Brazil, and made a paper about "self defense", which is called here "legitimate defense", and wrote a topic about this subject. According to brazilian law, you are in your perfect right to use any kind of "ofendículos", (any kind of "trap"(for lack of better word)) whose whole effectiveness derives form it being visible, and that everyone can promptly realize it's perilous nature. i.e. barbed wire, blades on top of fences, etc. But, there are what is called "mecanismos de defesa mecânica preordenada", or preemptive defense devices, in a free translation, whose effectiveness derives from them being occult up to their activation (i.e., shotgun on door, mines, etc.). Those are extremely illegal, although their usage MAY, and that's a big may, be justified. Mainly, if it was actually used to defend someone's LIFE, not their stuff.

I remember a case here in the UK. Several criminals staged a home invasion and held a family and some of their relatives at knifepoint, the homeowners complied as they ransacked the house until the men decided to try and r*pe their young teenaged daughter, the criminals were soon overpowered and attempted to flee but one was slow and got caught in the garden whereupon he got knocked around with a cricket bat. He sustained brain damage and as such faced no punishment, several of the male family members present got prison sentences (and pretty ungenerous ones by the standards of the British justice system) and the known criminal is still a sack of sh*t to this day, regularly committing crimes with impunity as the police claim he is mentally incapable and thus isn't culpable for his actions, no matter what those are or how frequently they occur.

In Germany it's the other way round. Lawschool teaches the 'hells angels case', where (you guessed it) a member of the hells angels shot a policeman through the door while they were trying to get into his house to arrest him for the weapon he owned (but he had a license for it). He did so because he was thinking the policemen were bandidos as he expected revenge from them. The officer died later in hospital and the shooter got an acquittal since he was in an ETBI situation. ETBI is short for Erlaubnistatbestandsirrtum, which basically means circumstances in which the defendant falsely thinks of a situation where his actions would be covered by self defense. Which was the case here. Eventually the High Court blamed the police for not revealing themselves while trying to arrest the guy.

The ones that always make my blood boil are when a person is defending themself (and not just placing traps) and they have the chance to kill their attacker, but instead just choose to wound them, at least at first, to make them stop.... and they end up being sued. I'm aware that the law in some jurisdictions leans towards the "if you're not willing to kill your attacker then clearly the situation isn't dangerous enough to justify deadly force", but the average person isn't a killer, nor do they want to be, nor really does society at large want them to be.

Those who haven't experienced intense violence often fantasize about how glorious it will be. It isn't. It's ugly. Life isn't a movie. But that pirate idea is pretty bad-ass.

Seriously. People dont see how privileged they are to not know the gruesome reality of how bad it really is. It makes my blood boil when I See people talking about how they would shoot to kill... If you want to own a gun for any purposes other than hunting, Job requirement or recreational shooting, then you are the Kind of person who should never be allowed to be anywhere near a gun...

My mother shot and killed an armed intruder while she was pregnant with her oldest (my sister) father was at work and she was home alone. Puts a smile on her face every time she tells the story. People very much handle situations very differently

I’d feel more sympathy if the Brineys actually used the house. Most people probably thought it was just abandoned and taking stuff from it wouldn’t hurt anyone. There was no reason to set up a trap as they didn’t live there and were not in danger.

@@tyger5645 It's pretty obvious that a house with a no trespassing sign is owned by someone that doesn't want you there, and the borders of a house are also very clear. It should be fine to defend it, lived-in or not.

In the 90s in Wiltshire England a farmer who was in dispute with his neighbour rigged up a shotgun in a copse with a tripwire across a meadow. It worked. His body was found two days later lying in the meadow after he tripped on the tripwire himself. I remember the incident and noticed the car parked by the road for a couple of days and wondered why it hadn't moved.
