Thank you very much for the video. You performed all the test I would like to do if I had equipment.

I've just ordered one of these via Amazon and it's due to arrive today (next day delivery - because I'm like a kid and couldn't wait). This will join my collection of cheap Chinese Baofeng radios that I've already got and am very happy with. The thing I've noticed with the Ham radio scene - at least in the UK is.... You get put down / frowned upon by the elitists when you disclose that you are using anything other than the usual brands (Icom, Yaseu etc). On my local repeaters you can hear all the old timers calling these brands of radios black and blue. Cheap chinese radio this, cheap chinese radio that. It makes me laugh though because thanks to these cheap radios and the introduction of a tiered license system in the UK (foundation, intermediate and full) there have never been so many people able to get on the bands as there are now. Amateur radio has become affordable thanks to radios like these. Not to sound grim but these old timer purists (and that's mainly the people that seem to have this attitude) aren't going to be around forever. If they had their way then they would be the only people on the bands with only Icoms, Yaseus etc allowed and Amateur Radio would die a slow death without the new blood coming in and indiscriminately using any brand of radio because it's affordable. Who wouldn't love to have the latest Icom costing £2,000 and upwards? but not everyone can afford that. For a little while I used to be a member of a local radio club - one with a well established history going waaay back to the time when radio communications were in their infancy (we're talking late 1800s - early 1900s). But the place was ran by a select few aged elitists that cherry picked what they did and didn't acknowledge as being amateur radio related. Numerous people have come and gone from that club (myself included) having tried to bring the place into the modern age and make it more popular to encourage new members - particularly young members - but these select few individuals wanted none of it. So this club now slowly dies along with their aging member base and soon it will be gone - along with all those years of history. All because they refuse to accept the modern world of communications. Try to introduce stuff like Arduinos, computers or anything modern and they go into meltdown like it's some un-related subject - despite the fact every one of them has a computer in the shack and they use programs like HRD etc. Unless it's valves they can worship or it involves entering tiresome rubber stamp contests (where everyone is 5/9 no matter what) they're not interested. Any attempt to introduce anything else is met with resistance, stubbornness, ignorance and even hostility. The place falls apart because they claim they do not have the time to give to do the work but refuse to step aside and let people on to the committee that do because that would mean relinquishing control of the club - something they cannot bare to do. Instead they'd rather watch it fall apart and the membership dwindle. There are countless grants available to them which as a registered charity they could access to fix the place up, invest in new equipment etc but they don't / wont. They have a lovely premises with a number of rooms that are unused / underused that have so much potential but are left to go moldy with the paint falling off the walls. You get no thanks for anything you do to improve the place. It's such a waste purely because of the stale, rigid attitude of a few people in charge that won't do anything about to improve the place and wont step aside to let anyone else do anything about it. Such a shame. The best thing I ever did was quit that club. Now I enjoy whatever I want that's amateur radio related without all the judgement - including cheap radios such as the 8900D which I'm eagerly looking forward to receiving today. Thanks for the review! I found it very useful. I have given the video a like as well =]

Wow... you must have a lot of spare time on your hands to write a post like that. Many clubs operate the way you describe unfortunately. The club I'm a member of is pretty good, it's more of a social club with radio thrown in. Just remember you get what you pay for, the cheap Chinese radios aren't in the same class as Yaesu/Icom etc when it comes to performance.

I had to read the entire post. I could imagine a smoke filled old room, with elderly men, just sitting around and grumbling about WW2 and Margret Thatcher! LOL.... You are not alone in England. My local club, here in the USA has the same bunch of "Old Heads", who dislike these chinese radios and their owners! They do embrace modern technology though. As long as its used for HF operation. But still, the same old grumps! I agree, these affordable radios have awakened interest in Ham Radio again, for the working class folks.

Good informative video. Interesting as I observed exactly the same on my power supply and Bird watt meter. £65 GBP radio though so cost effective. Especially since its 50USD for a cctss board for my TS711E, then another 50USD for my TS811E then another £50 for my TR-751E

I just bought the same radio but you said it has high and low power. The one I have the QYT KT8900 has three power settings on the mic #/lock button. Low is 5 watts, HL is 15 watts and High is 25 watts on 2 meters. 70cm is 5w on L, HL is 14w and H is 20 watts. Does anyone else's radio work like this? The manual list H,L only.

I bought this radio last summer (2016) thinking it would be a cheaper alternative to the big three. It was cheap, alright. I realized it stopped receiving when my HT was receiving, but it went to sleep. You get what you pay for. POS! KG6CMF

I bought two of these mini type units, both had a hard time making 18 watts and 15 UHF Telewave meter and a bird used. These where peak reading,, as they both vary in the frequency band, Ours units peaked in the Commercial band worse on the Ham Bands They are sadly over advertised. One of them won't work with Windows 10 So yes price is great if they would advertise them properly, I am still looking for a 25 watt mobile.......I also got stuck with the one that advertised 220 got it and it is 240 MHZ

Welcome to the world of cheap radios. You get what you pay for as they say. I reckon these would be ok for an unsecured vehicle like a jeep, not too much to lose if it gets stolen, and they work well enough to get you on the air and have some fun..
@CarstenBauer8 жыл бұрын
Maybe they got the 25 watts while powering it on 13.8v +/-20% and used the higher power of 15v?
@vk6cs4568 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't think another 1.2v would make that much difference. I think it's more likely their claims are exaggerated. Of course I only tested one sample, maybe others will do what they say and they just have poor quality control. It is a very cheap unit after all.

How do u repair one if u get hold of a dead one
@mrbyamile69733 жыл бұрын
(1) Open trash bin (2) drop it in (3) close trash bin lid. Or take apart and look for skid marks... they are so cheap (both quality and price) that it would cost more to have a quality service tech repair it.

Hi. I have a QYT KT8900 that no longer works properly. It will transmit, but only over about 100 yards. The reason for this could be it got too hot on the dashboard of my car during some hot weather, or, after It packed up, I discovered (using my Baofeng UV-5RTP) that my Mag Mount was giving a SWR of 3.5/1. My question is do you know of a company in the UK that repairs the QYT KT8900. So far I have had no luck finding one. I'd be most great full if you can help. Thanks. Dave Morgan MW6IVW

Hi David. I'm afraid not, and I strongly suspect if there was one the repair bill would be close to that of a new radio.

Thanks for responding VK6CS. I'll probably pull it apart just to see what is inside. Thanks again. Dave.

If you only get short range transmit..you probably fried the finals on it. Shouldn't be to hard to replace them if you know how.
@vk6cs4567 жыл бұрын
The low output is just due to poor specifications. The price of these radios makes them disposable, if it had no output it would go in the bin.

Funny how you mentioned "Key-Up". I wonder where this term came from ? I mean, we have Key Down in CW but no corresponding key up. The term ""key up a repeater" is the most bizarre statement. What does KEY UP mean and where does it come from ?? I think it's on my list of things to hate, like PTT. Who invented that ? The US Army ??? Push To Talk..... dumb-arses.....

Thank you for those kind words Ade.

Key up... Hmmm, I don't know where that came from. I suppose the carrier comes up when I 'key' the mic. The rest of the guys use the same expression so I didn't make it up.

VK6CS We all use the term, I just wonder where it started. Cheers
