A bit more info on the man at 7:00, the reason he dug through a mountain was because his wife had a medical emergency and died en route to hospital because of the distance, so he made it his mission to ensure nobody else died because of lack of access to a hospital.

6:55 for those of you not familiar with mr wade's work, his dedication was such that he went so far as to go fishing in the rivers of Chernobyl. He gained permission to fish for four days in the exclusion zone searching for evidence of mutation amongst the wildlife, specifically the wels catfish. He succeeded, catching one near the pipes of the exploded reactor 4, and turned the radioactive fish in to the authorities. He is no longer allowed back to avoid levels of radiation hazardous to his long term health.

For the IRS computer situation: a friend of mine maintains similarly old computer systems for banks. The reasoning isn't that it's cheaper than upgrading, the idea is to limit liability. The ways in which numbers are rounded and mathematical operations are done are completely understood on these systems and no one wants the liability of confirming newer program languages will work exactly the same. A very simple error could compound and cause millions or billions.
@SlushieDee
@SlushieDee Жыл бұрын
Yep, it’s precisely because banks and the irs are processing massive amounts of money that they don’t “upgrade” to newer technologies. When lives and livelihoods are at stake, it’s not about speed or ease of maintenance, it’s about staying as close as possible to knowing exactly how the program behaves.

It’s not just the IRS. A lot of government budgeting systems are ancient. Partly because it’s not as sexy to spend money on IT as it is on weapons. Partly because they’re so entrenched and wrapped in manual workarounds that kept them running, replacing them is the work of years. Figuring out Interfaces and reports that need replaced is years of research. I know, I worked pre-acquisition for just one of the AF’s ancient budgeting tools.

I was thinking of the same thing. If a calculator works there's no need to replace it with some 16 core, 64 bit CPU with the latest GPU running on the fastest NVMe drives and 128Gig of ram. The 60 year old machine is probably running COBOL, which is very stable and is still being used as an OS/language today. The only thing you have to do is replace modules that break with newer hardware, assuming the older modules will ever break. 1+1 is still 2.

13:50 not only that. Magenta is a color we see, but technically, does not exist, (as well as many other colors) because somewhere along the evolutionary line, there were apparently tones of green we needed to distinguish from each other, later being distinguished as the color magenta, despite being "green". I hate colors because of that, and I'm an artist.

Note at 1:35 : The current state of Watermelons was not achieved through GMOs. It was achieved through selective planting. just because 2 parents have the same phenotype doesn't mean an offspring cant have a different phenotype. 1:25 I believe it's less GMO and more "selective breeding" here. Many of fruits and vegetables we eat today are the way they are because we were planting plants that yield more desirable attributes in final products. That's for example why we have access to seedless bananas and watermelons. Seedless produce is a genetic mistake that under normal circumstances wouldn't be able to to spread further, so we instead opted for planting entire pieces of plants for growth. There exists a pretty high possibility that all bananas you eat today were possibly grown from what i can only describe as "clones" of the single plant that had that genetical error years if not decades ago

@Ikajo
@Ikajo Жыл бұрын
@@konradzukowski213 Most people tend to think that way. Those types of GMO usually combine factors from different organisms that would never be combined outside of a lab. Like golden rice. Selective breeding is still a form of gene modification though. Everything humans have domesticated has been genetically modified. Thus GMO. Even stuff from labs are not necessarily bad though. Some of it can potentially save lives and protect the Earth. For example, there have been attempts to make crops more resilient to draughts and fungi/pest infestations. Lowering the need of watering and using harmful chemicals.

Electrical Standards state that if you plan to leave something plugged in for more than 48 hours, it should be through permanent power (an outlet in the wall). Basically, the Secret Service Headquarters is basically a HUGE fire risk. The only reason why they haven't fixed it is because those computers and software need to be running every single second. For 3:24, it’s actually not weird at all that the IRS is still using tech from the 60s. It’s precisely because their job is so important that they don’t switch to something newer, not in spite of it. Those programs have been in use on those computers for 60 years, which means 60 years to weed out any bugs and pin down exactly how the math and numbers are handled, which for something like the IRS is far more valuable than any gain in performance that could result from switching to newer technology. The IRS understandably doesn’t want to redo an entire codebase when every new line of code they write has the chance to create a literal trillion-dollar mistake. For them, COBOL on a mainframe isn’t outdated, it’s a tried-and-true solution. It’s not broken, so they have no reason to fix it.

Washington's coastal people are heavily dependent on salmon, as for the natives its a very important part of their culture and lives. And for the people who aren't natives, there is many jobs that are centered around salmon and salmon hunting. very proud to be a Washingtonian :D

17:35 TIL Lawrence of Arabia was a British officer who fought in WWI, not just a famous movie from the 60s that Billy Joel liked. Ngl part of that’s on me, but c’mon, why didn’t my school curriculum cover WWI beyond “Franz Ferdinand, Shot Heard Round the World, lead to WWII?”

i actually experience something like third man syndrome, after nearly attempting i had a psychotic episode and lost my shit, im not sure what happened or if i feel sleep from the drugs i took, but a entity, i could barely see or hear, was with me the whole time, it didnt have a normal or consist shape and was very colourful, and it felt like a voice in my head, i was living alone so it was definitely a hallucination, but it was strangely comforting, it never approached me and never really entered my vision, but i could make out something there, it hasnt returned since, and im baffled by it, even when im on hard drugs, he doesnt come back, my doctor thought i was just seeing things, but it felt so real, like he was actually guiding me, idk what happened and i can barely remember, but i think of him often, hoping he will return

For anyone curious about Desmond Doss, they made a movie about his heroic story called Hacksaw Ridge. Its a good movie that I personally really enjoyed (8.1/10 on IMDb). His dedication to his morals is really admirable, and his act of heroism is awe inspiring.
