My mom used to have me take NyQuil to fall asleep bc we didn't know I had undiagnosed ADHD, but I would stay up and trip on dxm. One time she actually paid attention and saw how I had trouble walking and she felt so bad she never asked me to take it again. I don't blame her because she wasn't purposely trying to poison me, but I wish she had paid more attention. I can't imagine how fucked up it is to purposefully do this to your child.

@@distort10n I remember being sick with the flu as a small kid (maybe about 4 or 5) and my dad encouraged me to take the adult size dose of dxm cough medicine instead of the child sized dose. The dreams I had were awful, including night terrors, and thinking I saw a demon/alien creature in the bathroom. Not fun.

I’d ask how on earth she managed to give her child a dose high enough to produce symptoms, but honestly I don’t have to. People nowadays have gotten way too comfortable with over the counter drugs and are popping them back like candy despite all the information we have about them, I can’t imagine how it was back then. Just goes to show no matter how “safe” a drug may appear, always proceed with caution.

When I first met my partner they had a DPH/Benadryl addiction and they didn't want to scare me away with their addiction because they had a big crush on me so apparently they stopped cold turkey and got pretty bad withdrawals. Didn't find that out until 2 years into the relationship how bad they were struggling and thought they just did it recreationally. Needless to say i'm very proud of them and thank GOD everyday they're sober, and happy I was the catalyst even if I didn't know i was at the time (sage if you're reading this I love you with all my heart)

i took 120 pills in an “attempt” and was later told that i shouldn’t have survived. i’m not a large individual by any means, but i’d imagine someone would have to be absolutely massive to survive that without serious physical consequences, unless they got sick and threw some up. EDIT: i posted this comment before actually listening to the story; OP’s description of what happened would fit with taking that much, but i’d also imagine it could’ve been a significantly lower dose with the same effects; if OP really did take 400 pills, i’m not surprised they had that extensive of issues, but i am still surprised they survived. as i said, i was told i shouldn’t have survived; i was in the ICU for a day and a half and i took less than a third of what OP states they took.

The LD min (minimum lethal dose) is 10.1mg per kg. So if you were 165 lbs, the minimal dose to kill you would be 757mg. With each benedryl being 25mg, 400 capsules would be 10,000mg- way beyond lethal range. I very HIGHLY doubt that person took 10,000mg of benedryl. Unless they’re posting from beyond the grave.

I wonder if OP threw up while in the hospital and that's part of how they figured out what it was that he took. I have to presume that your stomach would revolt with 400 pills kicking around in it, and it'd lower the actual absorbed amount a little. Idk.

This crap gave my sister a chronic panic disorder and ruined her life. She turned to harder stuff to cope and her scummy adult friends were all too willing to oblige. She passed away before we turned 20. I still remember holding her and staying up with her the entire night after she took this at 16 and had a bad go. Had to keep telling her she wasn't d*ing over and over and over, till 9 in the morning. She had panic attacks for days after and never recovered fully, had them at least every other day after that. Edit: I wasn't expecting many responses, if any. I'm greatly appreciative of the kind and encouraging words, thank you. My sister suffered more than I ever will, however. Please, if you see a friend or loved one, especially a teenager, going down the wrong path and you have any way of turning them around, please do. It can't be understated how quickly things can go badly, especially if they're mentally unwell and have bad influences in their life. Be the good influence in their life and remind them that they're needed. My sister and I weren't in contact when we were 17 as she'd left our home, and it only took two years for her life to be ended by OD. Us reconnecting at 18 wasn't enough. If you have the ability to be present, do so. Her last text to me a couple days before she passed was a completely unprompted plea for me not to leave her, followed with no reply to my supportive response. My last worried text to her was the day she passed, and I know now she never got to read it given her TOD. They need you more than you know, and most of the time they won't tell you in a straightforward manner, if at all.

i have trouble believing any of these trip reports because ive just never experienced anything like a trip on benadryl in doses from 150mg to 2500mg. like literally zero symptoms of hallucination or reality bending or anything. not even memory loss. just tiredness, lethargy, extreme thirst, and fear of dying. yet i'm the person who can't take a normal dose of nyquil if i have to work the next day because it makes me feel like i'm mildly tripping on acid for 1.5 days straight... i'm sure people DO expierience this but like how come i never did, even with doses higher and more lethal than these trip reports allege? maybe you have to take it with the intention of tripping or something lol

Yea, so many posts on these types of subreddits are straight up fanfic-styled posts about drug trips. People eat it up. They all use the stereotypical trip report that give detailed imagery but yet in the same story will talk about how they didn’t remember waking up, etc. Much like the “so and so died, but I somehow just knew to check their Reddit account and 100% totally knew that I needed to give everyone an update about this person you don’t know using a throwaway account’s passing.” as it’s happened way too often … even back then on old forums people would pull that for sympathy posts for some reason (to become apart of some legendary “rip” posts I guess) while using the same IP (this was before VPNs were even common to use) to create another account to pretend to be someone completely different … remember on a few forums the admins had to call some people out for it. I highly doubt that shite has changed with things like Reddit.

My mother ‘accidentally’ OD’ed me on DPH at age six - I was very sick, likely having an allergy-induced asthma attack, and it was very late at night. My mom I guess was too “embarrassed” of the “scene” it would cause if we called an ambulance (she didn’t have a car or license and my dad was on a business trip). That’s what she always said when I brought it up as a kid, but really, I think at that point she was concerned about CPS charges for poisoning me. So back to that night: She kept giving me more and more liquid DPH, hoping it would help bc the doctor had recommended previously for allergies. This was not allergies. I was tossing & turning in my bed, struggling to breathe and panicked. I remember opening my eyes and seeing my entire bed covered in a thick layer of cockroaches. I screamed for help and tried to stumble to my mother’s room. She got up and told me to just come sleep in her bed with her and told me the cockroaches weren’t real. I laid in her bed and kept getting startled because as I watched her sleep, I kept hallucinating her eyes were open and all black, glaring at me. At one point, I was seeing my family members’ head floating in the air near the ceiling. It would alternate between which family members’ heads were floating, and they looked semi transparent, like ghosts, with smoky green fog. They were just staring at me, eyes dark and angry, sometimes mumbling. I was so terrified, I kept waking my mom up about it and she kept saying it wasn’t real and that I just needed to try to get some rest. Rest wasn’t happening because I could barely breathe. I don’t remember anything past that, I think I blacked out around this time.

Yup. My mom was the same way, she refused to take me to the emergency room on several occasions because she worried more about total strangers judging her as a bad mother than she did about my welfare. Frankly, CPS should absolutely have been called on your mother. I'm absolutely enraged at her on your behalf.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a couple allergies that cause anaphylactic shock. One is aspirin and you’d be surprised how prevalent that or its main ingredient, salacylic acid, are! I’ve had to be taken to the hospital more than once via ambulance thanks to these allergies and I’ve been treated with everything from epinephrine to benedryl. Doing an absolutely massive dose of liquid benedryl is something I’ve had as treatment many times. So your mom wasn’t really doing anything the ER wouldn’t have done. Obviously she wouldn’t know the perfect dose, but she was trying and using the correct thing to try. If you have allergies that result in anaphylactic shock, and don’t have access to an epi pen, make sure you always have benedryl around for your safety. Yes you feel like shit after but it’s less dangerous than epinephrine (which also makes you feel like shit) and it works!

@@Spooky_Platypus I have several allergies that cause anaphylaxis too, and here’s the thing, which I didn’t know until I started taking myself to the ER on the rare occasion I had a severe reaction, and you can Google this to confirm if you want: DPH alone will not stop anaphylaxis. It is always used in conjunction with other medications intravenously at the ER. Using DPH to treat anaphylaxis at home is a potentially fatal risk (that my mom put me at endless times). We didn’t even own an epi-pen even though I had severe peanut allergies among others. Didn’t have a rescue inhaler either. My medical record stops at age 2.5 and doesn’t show back up high school when I old enough to realize the only way I’d get to see the docs I needed to desperately see was if i made CPS threats (usually because I had bronchitis or a similar infection, figured out later it was likely because of the terrible mold infestation that house had (look up “mold mushrooms” if you wanna get freaked out real quick, these showed up in my guinea pig’s cage once when I was a kid).

as someone who has used massive quantities of benadryl in both “attempts” and for vaguely recreational purposes (still with ideation as a driving force): dph trips are not fun trips. they are not like lsd or shrooms. i was lucky enough to not meet the “hat man”, and it was still absolutely terrifying. i have TWO distinct memories from several months worth of trips. first, i was slapping at bugs that my then-boyfriend had to inform me were not there. second, i spent an entire day convinced i had died and was now a ghost, because i had friends over but no one was talking to me even though i was talking to them. it was only after coming out of it that i realized i’d been alone the entire time. i’m also pretty sure i gave myself a small degree of brain damage from it; my memory is far, far worse than it used to be. i also now have trouble taking pills because of it, and even the smell of benadryl makes me nauseous (yes, it has a smell). i can sort of understand how it could be considered a cheap and accessible “trip”, but for the love of gd, i’ll never understand how people can think it’s worth it. EDIT: can’t believe i forgot this one (take that as proof of memory loss if you want) but my last overd0se left me with 20 thousand dollars in medical debt, because i left my apartment door open and my neighbor called in a welfare check, at which point i was forcibly taken to the ER and then the psych hospital. so, yeah… it’s not worth it.

I was sent to an "alternative school" for kids who had substance use issues when I was about 14. The actual problems that drove us to experiment weren't addressed, so it was mainly a place for us to congregate and swap different ways to get high in the most accessible ways possible. There was a girl there who would regularly take 2-3 boxes of coricidin, which is a cough and cold medicine. It wasn't an antihistamine but rather dextromethorphan, or DXM. I tried it a few times and landed myself in the ER with activated charcoal being forced down my throat, and the "high" was a terrible feeling anyways. The girl that used it regularly must have had some serious issues from it, as she was seemingly jaundiced, with yellowing in her eyes and fingernail beds.

Mostly underlying mental health issues leading to self medicating. This was in 2006 so I hope they’ve found better ways of addressing and treating young adults who struggle with it.

In the su;cide story- Fentanyl is a painkiller. They wouldn't give you that to sedate you when you're overdosing on benadryl. I don't think they'd give it to you to sedate you even if you weren't on benadryl since there are meds specifically for sedation & fentanyl isn't one of them! Also, fentanyl has a super short half life- it doesn't last long at all, so they wouldn't pump him full of fentanyl to keep him under for days. It'd take such a crazy amount of the drug when they could just use much less of something that's actually meant for that purpose. I mean, I'm not a dr so I could def be wrong but I feel like the person is either mistaken or lying.

Yea, I found a couple of those stories iffy to say the least like that one who said they saw elves or something painfully cliché, and the one where they said they kept being given "fentanyl" for their OD and that just doesn't make sense at the very least because it sounds like DPH can increase the heart rate and make breathing difficult, while opiates would decrease heart rate and depress respiration. That's an incredibly bad combination of effects. Benzos make sense for doctors to use, because they're used for bad acid trips or to come down from acid.

I used to do the same but in pill form. It was fun for a while, but eventually instead of a high, I'd break out in red painful rashes with no high. And for a while, I kept trying because "maybe next high will be like the old good ones. I just need a higher dose" So perhaps your friend kept trying to get a good high, but kept ending up with bad ones. Glad to hear your friend is doing better nowadays, though

Just gotta say DPH is not a psychedelic. Classic psychedelics would be LSD, Mushrooms. DMT, mescaline, etc. DPH is a deliriant. Other deliriants would be nutmeg and DXM(at higher doses.) (Delirium is in the name, if that's not enough warning about these drugs!) Both are subgroups of hallucinogens, but are very, very different in terms of safety and user experience. Unfortunately, to a broke, lonely, teenager deliriants are cheaper and much easier to access as OTC medications. For those who haven't done either: on LSD, for example, you are totally aware of your hallucinations and that they are fake. You also aren't seeing unicorns running around your house. Things morph and move and breathe. There's a psychedelic overlay to the world. Think of it like a filter. Maybe a cloud will take the shape of a unicorn. When it does, you ponder the meaning and history of the unicorn. On deliriants, you are unaware of your hallucinations. A unicorn appears from nothing, and it is menacing. The eyes look at you, black, hateful. You look down, scorpions are crawling up your legs. They're venomous. You try to escape, but you can't. You find zpiders cover every surface of your home, each deadly and waiting for you. You crumple into panic.

Even in recommended doses chronic use can still cause negative side effects. Actually, if there is another drug you can take to help you besides benadryl it is always the best. I should add that you can become tolerant to it, so the doses you have to take to have the same effect increase, but it doesn't decrease the long term negative consequences of it.

You need to stop, you are poisoning yourself and the sleep is not quality sleep. It causes dementia due to its anticholinergic activity. Anticholinergic drugs block the effect of acetylcholine which is a key neurotransmitter in both cognitive and muscular function. Try taking the supplement acetylcholine to fix the damage; it’s a B vitamin. There are some excellent vitamins and supplements that might help your brain recover - 5HTP and a small dose of melatonin can help reregulate your sleep cycles.

After I’ve inhaled the smoke I felt immediately pretty weird paired with a strong feeling of guilt, like I did something I’ve not been supposed to. It almost felt like an evil entity performed some witchcraft on me. I also felt like I was dragged in the corner of my room. There was not a lot going on visually but I was pretty stressed out on the emotional level. Thankfully, it didn’t last for a long time. I took it two times and both trips were were the same. I think the trip is very heavily tight to the dosage. I had a 25X extract. I also had a 50X extract but I was not into it trying because of my bad experiences. Anyways, someday a friend came over and I gave him the 50X it was his first time, but he was really looking forward for it. I gave him my pipe and he went in the next room for about 30-45 minutes. When he came back, he was pretty happy about the experience. So was my thoughts… after some time we were talking about that incident and then he told me that whole trip was mentally affecting him until that very day. He said when the salvia kicked in, he was seeing himself 8x standing in front of him. So basically, he was surrounded by himself. And now Comes the strange part: He said that he had to choose one of the "replicas". After he made his decision his whole being was transferred into one of the clones and the trip ended. And the part that weirded him and also me out the most was that he is until this day he is not sure if he is the same person/soul he was before smoking that stuff. so yeah pretty freaky if you ask me, so take it on your own risk! DPH was easily the most intense, and the most unpleasant. It makes me really reflect on how terrible I felt to consider it preferable to reality. It’s a dissociative and a deliriant, it’s not fun. Lots of ghostly jelly spiders crawling over the walls, darkness, talking to invisible people, watching televisions that later turn out not to be on, thinking you’re smoking cigarettes and then they disappear, I kept thinking people downstairs or outside were calling out to me, but they weren’t. It’s a paranoid, dark and lonely state. You can’t sleep, you can’t stop it, a lot of people wind up in hospital or police custody, because you really can’t control your relationship with reality.

Could be wrong, but I believe many of the negative effects are related to DPH's inhibition of choline/acetylcholine. Choline (nutrient) forms acetylcholine (neurotransmitter). Choline/acetylcholine plays a key role in a ton of physiological functions like maintaining integrity of cellular membranes, clearing cholesterol from the liver (if not cleared, leads to liver disease), regulating cardiac and neuromuscular function, DNA methylation, and memory/cognitive function (just to list a few). Any positive feelings are probably sort of pseudo euphoria because your body believes it is dying.

nope! totally on point, actually. it's an intense anticholinergic; this is one of the reasons its a frontline urgent-setting treatment for certain forms of dystonia for decades now. over a decade ago in college i tried to 'trip' on benadryl and was surprised that i felt absolutely no effects [and coincidentally a brief remission of spasticies that i didnt realise at the time were from my specific flavour of undiagnosed genetic dystonia]. ETA: there are different formations of dystonia, but essentially in dopa-linked dystonias it is in part an imbalance between the dopa-receptors & the cholinergic systems that mediate the signalling within the neuromuscular system [that then cause uncontrolled spasticities]. i'm hazy on the exact mechanisms beyond that

I ate a LARGE amount of nutmeg once too, i actually quite liked the experience for the first part, until the energy wore off. Definitely not enough to start using nutmeg as a drug but was an okay experience. I felt almost euphoric and ran around for I don’t even know how long, I felt like I had all the energy in the world, I did until I fell down on the floor profusely sweating and couldn’t breathe. After that it wasn’t so fun and I was just pretty anxious and irritated and couldn’t get comfortable.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that what a lot of these people describe experiencing after prolonged abuse of this drug is a brain injury. All of those symptoms describe to a T what it’s like to suffer from a moderate-severe concussion. I had one in the 8th grade and it took me almost 3 months to regain reading comprehension, speak without a stutter, recover my short term memory and fine motor skills. It was about 6 months before I was completely back to “normal” but there’s no real way of knowing whether that’s just a *new* normal. One of the most amazing things about the human body is our brains’ ability to recover from injuries, to adapt and find new ways to reach an improved level of functioning, they continue to heal for years after an injury, but although they’re great at recovering over time it seems rare that anyone is ever exactly the same as they were before. It’s why all of those professional football players have the emotional threshold of a thimble and become violent to their romantic partners. My brain injury made me feel like a shell of myself and barely human, it’s so depressing to think that people are intentionally subjecting themselves to this potential consequence.

I knew someone in highschool who was pretty reckless and did this and also one night took 30-35 Gravol. He was 15 doing this. I walked down to the bus stop to go to school in the morning and there he was, waiting for me crumpled up in the bus shelter. He looked a mess and I asked him what the hell is he doing here and where is Danielle (his trip partner). He told me he thinks he was R worded, and he got jumped. He told me his underwear are gone and hes in pain and there was definitely blood in that region when I looked for him. He was so messed up that someone/possibly more than 1 person robbed him, beat him up and R worded him. He was never the same after that. His trip buddy? Found drowned in someones backyard pool. Luckily, they had cameras and there was no foul play or anything- she simply entered their backyard and drowned after entering their pool cause she was so intoxicated. Ill never understand why people WANT to do this.

I sadly have experience with this topic. I tried to end it when I was 15 due to struggling with chronic pain that no one believed or treated. I took half a bottle of benadryl. Roughly 50-60 pills. I was hallucinating, I was delirious, responding to people who weren't there on discord, saying bizarre statements and replying to hallucinated conversations. I was a horrible experience, honestly. I think the only reason that I survived is that I have a VERY high tolerance to medicine, I have to take a lot more than regular people to even feel it. If you are struggling, PLEASE talk to someone. Just go steal or pay a houseless person to get you some white claws or beer or something. Go get some fucking weed. Ffs, tachycardia and serious cognitive impairment for "hatman"? It's just sooooo duuuuuummmmmmmbbbbb... Like, can't we just let mushrooms be legal or something? Thought I'd add that the best trip I've actually had is meditating. That sounds corny af, and it is. Cringe is empty of inherent existence, just as your identity is. What is aware of experience is unreachable by any hand, but you're also always touching it. Infinitely expansive without an expanse. Emaho, it is the naked awareness before identity and thought; the hair-tip of the empty, luminous, unmanifested nectar of dharmakaya. Go search for teachers to teach you that instead of the creepy hatman.

You know, weed is legal or decriminalized in much of the US and I truly thought this would slow down the frequency of people using otc medicine to the point of it becoming a drug. I remember cough syrup was a big one when I was growing up. It got mixed with energy drinks or four loko if someone was REALLY looking to be stupid. I stayed away from it because my parents were realistic with me about drugs. My dad once said ‘I won’t help you get weed, and I won’t smoke it with you, but I would rather you do something low risk than use non-drugs as drugs, because that can damage your organs.’

I will always be an advocate against dph because i had a huge problem with it that plagued me on and off for years. I was taking up to 20 a day 7 days a week. I would go through a 900 bottle of Benadryl in 2-3 days. It is awful. The first high was such an experience but then you never get that high again. You're chasing the high. Hence why reodsing is very common. It really damaged my eye sight and i still have some memory issues. I used to be in a constant state of psychosis. I've been clean for 3 years i think. I dont keep track because that just makes me want to take more. Now i barely ever think about except if i see a video lime this by one of my favorite creators lol What keeps away from it the most is that withdraw. Oh. M. G. That withdraw was a full week of sleeping and not being able to get out of bed. I almost lost my job because of it. I honestly don't even remember or know how i got out of bed and got to work. I actually dont remember a lot of my early 20s. I'm 27 now. We suspect my CFS is partially caused by my use. (CFS has no known cause hence why it's suspect.) It's a scary experience and can get out of hand so fast. Please don't try it and if you are taking it, try to take a step. I know its really hard to do but your health is more important than a shitty trip. And i know people will disregard this, so if you do, please just make sure you're safe. You're in a safe and comfortable place, i even recommend having a babysitter. I'm proud to be in a place where I'm not triggered by it and i don't really ever have cravings, once in a blue moon but i focus on curling my toes when i do. An urge only lasts 5 seconds (the longest 5 seconds of your life) please just try to distract yourself. You're more than some pink pills.

This was about 20 years ago and he was under the impression that benadryl was harmless and would just make him sleep. (He would frequently harm himself just badly enough to scare me, but not bad enough to do serious harm to himself) This instance though, he got a lot more than he bargained for and I had to call emergency services because he was completely delirious. I used to take way too much Benadryl when I was in middle school because I was very fixated on recreational drugs and a friend told me that they tried it before and it was cool. I thought it would be fun. It was horrible every single time yet I still kept doing it. It genuinely makes you feel so bad like I would get VERY tired every time yet I couldn't sleep no matter how hard I tried. You do definitely hallucinate things, especially bugs, which was terrible for me. It genuinely feels like you're going through psychosis. Your mouth also gets very very dry and for me it felt like I could never drink enough water I would just constantly have a dry mouth (while also having to pee a LOT). This might be because I was so young when I did this, but I still to this day experience memory problems (at 19), hallucinations, and psychosis, which are honestly, the lesser problems that can come from this. I genuinely hope anyone who learns about DPH stays very very far away from it because it can and most likely will fuck you up.

For about 7 years I have seen this man and it is torturous. I feel like there is someone watching me all the time and I become terrified, convinced that he is going to kill me. I hear whispers around me and often ask people around me to repeat what they said and it turns out no one has spoken. When I’m by myself I hear someone calling my name and telling me to come outside. I am in the middle of nowhere and this makes me feel paranoid combined with hat man.
