More from MajorScaled TV: / majorscaledtv
R.E.M.'s famous ballad "Losing My Religion" digitally reworked with a major scale. The original song is in A minor. So in the middle section, when it goes to a chord rooted in the 6th scale degree, it goes into an F major chord.
This edited version places the song into A major so when the middle section goes to the respective chord on its 6th scale degree it makes an F# minor chord.

João Vítor specifically, uncanny valley refers to when something isn't quite close enough to human, normal, etc. to be acceptable, but not strange or mysterious (uncanny) enough to "suspend disbelief" and accept that it's not the real thing. So people are left in this really confused or ambiguous state that they don't know how to make sense of, which freaks some people out It's a common explanation for why people hate clowns, dolls, humanoid robots, etc., but also things like distorted music that people are used to experiencing a certain way

I listen to this song frequently too. I have partly because of this version started trying to find other songs played differently. Postmodern Jukebox is great for this. Hailey Reinhart sings the best version of Creep I've ever heard. Most recently I've been addicted to I Want It That Way played in the style of Alice in Chains. Suddenly it sounds like it's about Layne's addiction to Heroin, and the guy performing the song does a fantastic impression of both Jerry Cantrell AND Layne Staley.

Lyrics: Oh life is smaller It's smaller than you And you are like me The lengths that I won't go to The nearness in your eyes Good, I've said just enough I set it off That's me in the center That's me in the shadows Gaining my religion Trying to fall off from you And I know that I can do it Oh yeah, I've said enough I haven't said too much I knew that I heard you laughing I knew that I heard you sing I know I knew I saw you try Every holler, of every sleeping hour I don't choose my confessions Trying to keep my eyes off you Like a happy, clear-minded sage, sage Oh yeah, I've said enough I set it off Consider this… Consider this the tease of the century Consider this the win That brought me off my knees, succeeded What if all these realities come flailing around? Now I've said … just enough I knew that I heard you laughing I knew that I heard you sing I know I knew I saw you try And that was not a dream That was not a dream That's me in the center That's me in the shadows Gaining my religion Trying to fall off from you And I know that I can do it Oh yeah, I've said enough I haven't said too much I knew that I heard you laughing I knew that I heard you sing I know I knew I saw you try And that was not a dream Try, spry, fly, high That was not a dream Not a dream Not a dream, dream

"losing one's religion" is southern USA slang for losing your cool or breaking down. The lyrics are about being at the end of your rope because someone doesn't love you back. The major key works so well for this when the melody descends rather than ascends.

It isn't actually about atheism, though. "Losing my religion" is a Southern American expression that means something like losing your temper, turning uncivil or being at the end of your rope. The song is really about unrequited love, according to the singer himself.

@highestsettings

***** Wow, such a clever joke you did there. Someone take him to the nearest burn ward. Religion is pretty shit, it's made purely for the purposes of thought control (this is bad and you'll go to hell if you do it, or this is good and you'll go to heaven if you do it. It's called conditioning) and for acquiring money. People who need religion to get through their day to day lives are emotionally stunted people. As well as the fact that they can't have thought about it very much, because in actuality if god DID exist, he's a massive cunt. Yeah I know there's that starving 6 year old in Africa, whose sat in a mud hut surrounded by piles of dead bodies that used to be his family. They died of a combination of aids and malaria, but he doesn't know what to do about it so he's just kind of sat there absorbing the smell. Meanwhile he's got a parasite feeding off of his eyes and he too has aids and malaria. He's certain to die unhappy, miserable, starving and alone. But at least I got an A on my English test right? Thanks god, I couldn't have done it without you!

People who are saying that this version is "worse than the original" just don't get it. This is more of a musical experiment more than an attempt to show up the original. The results, needless to say, are most intriguing indeed. However, to say that it is better or worse than REM's original is pretty much comparing apples to oranges.

I always thought this track made me imagine a working stiff in an office coming home every night and slowly wondering what the point of life was, depressed and lost. This version sounds like what he would sing while at work if he could, putting on a brave face, and it is somehow even more sad. As if there is something deeper than the song its self going on in his mind.

Man... This was already an emotional song & this feels like it just made it even more so.. Reminds me of Cold. Sad songs sung in a... lying to yourself kinda tone. Makes it even sadder that it's sung so happily.. As if you have no hope, but you say that you do. Makes my tear up.

that's more interesting than most of the key change videos i've come across. there's a hopefulness to the chorus that changes the singer's outlook and involvement on what's happened. it took me a few seconds to get with the song and sing along in the same key because it's really hard not to drop back into the familiar minor key.
